Chapter 3 - The Life They Never Knew

Evelyn called back immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
On the fourth attempt, Rachel answered.
“I’m fine.”
“What happened?”
“A courier.”
“You terrified me over a courier?”
“I didn’t know who he was.”
Rachel sounded embarrassed but still unsettled.
“He brought archived insurance documents.”
“What about the authorization?”
“I’m investigating it.”
“Could Julian have requested it?”
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn sat beside the window.
That possibility changed everything.
Had Julian known?
Had Charles?
Had someone discovered the pregnancy and allowed her to disappear anyway?
Rachel promised to keep searching.
Evelyn promised not to confront anyone until they understood more.
But her flight remained booked.
The next afternoon, Noah pressed his face against the airplane window.
“Cloud.”
“Yes.”
“Big cloud.”
“The biggest.”
Ethan wanted the window too.
Grace wanted Ethan’s snack.
Lily wanted everything.
By the time they landed in New York, Evelyn was exhausted enough to question every decision she had ever made.
Then Noah fell asleep against her shoulder.
And she remembered why she had returned.
Not revenge.
Recognition.
Her children deserved the truth.
Rachel met them at the hotel.
She hugged each child before pulling Evelyn aside.
“I traced the account.”
“And?”
“It belonged to Whitmore Family Holdings.”
“That tells us nothing.”
“Not exactly.”
Rachel handed her a printed record.
The request had been submitted under an executive authorization.
Initials:
M.W.
Margaret Whitmore.
Evelyn stared.
“Julian’s mother knew.”
“Maybe.”
“What else could this mean?”
“It proves someone used an authorization connected to her. It doesn’t prove Margaret personally requested it.”
Evelyn folded the paper.
Tomorrow she would find out.
At the Whitmore estate, preparations had already transformed the lawn.
Flowers.
Crystal chandeliers.
Gold chairs.
A temporary aisle stretching toward the mansion.
It looked less like a wedding than a royal production.
Evelyn watched from the SUV.
“You don’t have to do this publicly,” Rachel said.
“I know.”
“Then why here?”
“Because privately, Charles controls the room.”
Rachel understood.
At a private meeting, Charles could bury information.
At a wedding with three hundred witnesses, nobody could pretend Evelyn and her children had never appeared.
The children wore coordinated formal clothes.
Noah and Ethan wore beige suits.
Grace and Lily wore ivory flowered dresses.
Evelyn wore pale sage green.
She had originally chosen an ivory pantsuit, then changed her mind.
She did not want to look like a rival bride.
She wanted to look like herself.
The SUV door opened.
Noah took her hand.
Ethan took Grace’s.
Lily held Evelyn’s other hand.
“Ready?”
Four small faces looked up.
They had no idea what this moment meant.
Perhaps that was a blessing.
Evelyn stepped onto the path.
Guests began noticing.
Whispers moved faster than she did.
She recognized people from her old life.
Board members.
Family friends.
Society acquaintances.
Then Margaret saw her.
The older woman froze.
Her champagne glass slipped from her fingers.
It shattered.
Julian turned.
For a second, he did not recognize the children.
He only saw Evelyn.
Then his gaze lowered.
Four children.
His face emptied of color.
“Evelyn?”
She continued walking.
Vanessa stood beside him in an elaborate ivory gown.
Beautiful.
Perfect.
Until she saw the children.
Charles pushed through the guests.
“What is this?”
Evelyn stopped.
She opened her handbag.
“A wedding gift.”
She held out the envelope.
Julian stared at it.
Then at Noah.
Ethan.
Grace.
Lily.
“How old are they?”
Evelyn said nothing.
Julian calculated.
She watched the answer arrive.
His eyes widened.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Evelyn…”
“Open it.”
His fingers shook.
He tore open the envelope.
The DNA report unfolded.
Silence expanded around them.
Julian read the first page.
Then the second.
His knees almost seemed to weaken.
“Four?”
Evelyn nodded once.
He looked at the children.
“Are they mine?”
“You already know the answer.”
Julian covered his mouth.
Margaret moved closer.
“Let me see that.”
Charles took the report before Julian could respond.
His eyes moved quickly.
“Greater than ninety-nine point nine nine percent.”
Margaret stared at Evelyn.
“You were pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
Evelyn almost laughed.
“When do you think?”
Julian looked destroyed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Not here.”
“You disappeared with my children.”
“You chose another family before you knew this one existed.”
Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.
Evelyn noticed.
Everyone else was focused on Julian.
But Evelyn watched Vanessa.
The bride’s fingers were crushing the stems of her bouquet.
Her lips had gone pale.
She wasn’t looking at Evelyn.
She was looking at the DNA report.
Then toward the mansion.
Toward where her own three sons were waiting with their nanny.
Evelyn felt something cold move through her.
Julian followed her gaze.
“Vanessa?”
Vanessa blinked.
“I—I’m overwhelmed.”
Evelyn studied her.
This was not the reaction of a woman discovering that her fiancé had unknowingly fathered four children during his previous marriage.
This was fear.
Specific fear.
“What are you afraid of?” Evelyn asked.
Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.
“I’m not afraid.”
“Yes, you are.”
Charles looked between them.
“Evelyn, this is enough.”
“No.”
She kept watching Vanessa.
“You looked at that DNA report like it was going to expose you.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Evelyn saw it.
Julian did too.
“What does she mean?”
“Nothing.”
“Vanessa.”
“It’s our wedding day!”
“And those are apparently my four children.”
Julian’s voice cracked.
“I think our wedding can wait five minutes.”
Vanessa backed away.
Then Margaret spoke.
“Test the boys.”
Every head turned.
Vanessa froze.
Margaret repeated herself.
“Test Vanessa’s sons.”
“No.”
The word came too quickly.
Too loudly.
Julian stared at her.
Vanessa corrected herself.
“I mean, that’s insane.”
“Is it?” Margaret asked.
“You’ve treated me like family for two years.”
“Then there should be nothing to fear.”
Vanessa looked toward Charles.
He said nothing.
Julian stepped toward her.
“Vanessa.”
She shook her head.
“Don’t.”
“Are the boys mine?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“How can you ask me that?”
“Answer.”
Before she could, a small voice came from behind the guests.
“Mommy?”
One of Vanessa’s sons had wandered onto the lawn.
A nanny hurried behind him.
The little boy held something in his hand.
A photograph.
Vanessa saw it.
Her entire expression collapsed.
She rushed toward him.
“Give me that.”
But the boy moved toward Julian instead.
“I found Mommy’s picture.”
Julian crouched.
The child handed him the photograph.
Vanessa stopped.
Julian looked down.
His face slowly changed.
May you like
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
And beneath it was the name of a man Julian knew very well...
