Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Before Our Wedding

Security moved first.

Dad ordered everyone downstairs while the team searched the upper floor.

Nobody found Daniel.

But Mom's study had been disturbed.

The safe was open.

The original letter remained.

The trust copy was gone.

Someone had entered Ashford House without forcing a door.

That meant access.

Knowledge.

Or help.

Dad ordered the property locked down.

I looked at every person differently.

Even Thomas.

Especially Adrian.

"You think I did it," he said.

"I think believing people without evidence has cost me enough."

He accepted that.

Jonathan called again an hour later.

This time Adrian spoke to him.

I didn't listen.

Some conversations belonged to the people whose lives had been broken by them.

When Adrian returned, he'd been crying.

"My father left because Daniel threatened my mother."

"Why stay gone?"

"He says he was protecting us."

"Do you believe him?"

"I don't know."

That answer sounded familiar.

Trust had become a currency none of us possessed.

Jonathan agreed to meet.

Public place.

Attorneys present.

By noon, we sat inside a private conference room at Thomas's firm.

Jonathan Vale entered.

Adrian stood.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Older.

Thinner.

But the same eyes.

Father and son stared at each other.

No embrace.

Not yet.

Jonathan looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

"For which part?"

"All of it."

He explained that Daniel had built an extortion network around financial secrets.

Jonathan had helped at first.

Then tried to leave.

Margaret Ashford discovered them.

She offered Jonathan immunity in exchange for testimony.

Daniel learned about it.

Jonathan disappeared before he could testify.

"Mom protected you?"

"She tried."

"And you repaid her by disappearing."

Shame crossed his face.

"Yes."

"Why return now?"

"Because Daniel contacted me."

He placed an envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

Vanessa.

Pregnant.

Leaving a medical clinic.

On the back:

YOUR GRANDCHILD CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Adrian stared at Jonathan.

"Grandchild?"

Jonathan shook his head.

"Daniel wants me to believe the child connects our families."

Vanessa had said the other possible father was someone Daniel introduced.

Maybe Daniel had engineered even that.

The thought made me sick.

Jonathan produced a second document.

A copy of the original Northstar agreement.

There was a clause Dad hadn't mentioned.

If an Ashford beneficiary's spouse could establish a valid contractual claim before the beneficiary's thirtieth birthday, portions of voting control could become entangled in litigation.

Not ownership.

Leverage.

Daniel didn't need to own Northstar.

He needed to freeze it.

Then negotiate.

"That's why Adrian had to marry me."

Jonathan nodded.

"And why the divorce agreement mattered."

"Yes."

Adrian looked destroyed.

"I didn't know about her birthday clause."

Jonathan looked at him.

"You knew enough."

Adrian didn't defend himself.

That mattered.

Not enough for forgiveness.

But it mattered.

We spent hours reconstructing the scheme.

Then Thomas discovered something crucial.

The forged authorization wasn't legally sufficient.

Daniel needed one more item.

The original marriage license.

Not the public copy.

A supplemental document Adrian and I had signed privately during our wedding weekend.

I remembered it.

Adrian told me it was an insurance form.

"Where is it?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"My office safe."

Vale Meridian.

The same office Vanessa had taken us to.

Thomas sent someone.

The safe was empty.

Daniel had it.

Dad's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression darkened.

"What?"

He looked at me.

"The stolen trust copy was just delivered to Northstar's board."

"By whom?"

"Daniel's attorney."

"What does he want?"

"A meeting."

"When?"

"Tonight."

"Where?"

Dad hesitated.

"Vale Meridian."

Of course.

Daniel wanted the stage Adrian had built using borrowed power.

We prepared carefully.

No heroics.

No secret confrontation.

Attorneys.

Security.

Every document duplicated.

Every communication preserved.

I changed out of the blue gown for the first time since the gala.

When I looked at it lying across the bed, I thought I'd hate it forever.

Instead, I asked the housekeeper to clean it.

I refused to let Adrian own even the memory of a dress.

At seven, we arrived at Vale Meridian.

Daniel waited inside the boardroom.

Vanessa saw him and stopped.

"Dad."

Daniel Cross looked ordinary.

That was the frightening thing.

Silver hair.

Expensive navy suit.

Warm smile.

The kind of man strangers trusted instantly.

"Eleanor."

He gestured toward a chair.

"Finally."

I remained standing.

"You've spent four years arranging my life. You can stand while I dismantle yours."

His smile widened.

"Margaret's daughter."

Dad entered behind me.

Daniel's smile faded.

Then Jonathan appeared.

For the first time, Daniel looked surprised.

"Jonathan."

"Hello, Daniel."

Adrian entered last.

Four families.

Decades of lies.

One table.

Daniel placed the stolen document down.

"You believe this is about money."

"It's always about money with men like you," Dad said.

Daniel laughed.

"No, Charles. It's about what Margaret did."

He looked at me.

"Your mother didn't merely stop us."

"What did she do?"

"She took something."

Dad went pale.

"Don't."

I turned.

"Dad?"

Daniel slid a sealed envelope across the table.

It had my mother's handwriting on it.

Not a copy.

Original ink.

My name.

Eleanor.

"Where did you get this?"

"Margaret gave it to me."

"Why?"

"Because she knew Charles would never tell you."

Dad whispered, "He's lying."

Daniel smiled.

"Then open it."

I reached for the envelope.

Dad caught my wrist.

"Eleanor, please."

I looked into my father's eyes.

"What are you afraid I'll find?"

He released me.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My mother.

Daniel.

And a baby.

Me.

On the back, Mom had written one sentence.

Charles will raise her as his own.

I couldn't breathe.

I looked at Dad.

Then Daniel.

Daniel leaned forward.

May you like

And said:

"Now ask Charles who your biological father really is."
