Chapter 5 - My Father's Locked File

I read the name three times.

Jonathan Vale.

Adrian's father.

The man Adrian claimed had died when he was seventeen.

I turned toward Dad.

"What did Jonathan Vale have to do with Mom?"

Dad sat heavily in her old chair.

"Everything began before you were born."

The letter shook in my hand.

Dad explained.

Jonathan Vale and Daniel Cross had once worked with my mother, Margaret Ashford.

She had built an investment strategy that eventually became the foundation for Northstar.

Daniel wanted control.

Jonathan wanted money.

Mom discovered they were diverting funds through shell companies.

She stopped them.

Jonathan disappeared from finance soon afterward.

Daniel stayed.

For years.

Until Dad discovered Daniel had begun searching for the trust Mom left me.

"Why my trust?"

"Because it contains something besides money."

Dad pointed to the letter.

I continued reading.

Mom had placed early Northstar ownership rights into the trust.

Not control.

A contingent interest.

If certain conditions were triggered, those rights could become enormously valuable.

Marriage hadn't triggered them.

My thirtieth birthday would.

Two months away.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Adrian hadn't merely married an heiress.

Daniel had been waiting.

"What happens when I turn thirty?"

"You receive direct authority over your mother's Northstar stake."

"How much?"

"Enough."

"Dad."

"Thirty-one percent."

I stared at him.

Northstar wasn't merely a fund.

It was an empire.

And almost a third would become mine.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Your mother wanted you to have a life before you had power."

I understood that.

What I didn't understand was Adrian.

"Did Adrian know?"

"I don't know."

A voice came from the doorway.

"I didn't."

Adrian stood there.

Dad rose.

"I told you to stay downstairs."

"I followed Eleanor."

I looked at Adrian.

"Your father knew."

"What?"

"Jonathan Vale worked with my mother and Daniel."

Adrian's face went blank.

"My father was an insurance salesman."

"No," Dad said. "He wasn't."

Adrian shook his head.

"He died when I was seventeen."

Dad looked at him strangely.

"Who told you that?"

"My mother."

"Did you see his body?"

Adrian stopped breathing for a second.

"No."

A horrible possibility entered the room.

Daniel had returned.

Maybe Jonathan had too.

Thomas appeared behind Adrian carrying his laptop.

"You need to see this."

We returned to the library.

Thomas had traced Daniel's recent communications.

One number appeared repeatedly.

Registered through an offshore service.

But the financial account paying for it had a beneficiary.

J. Vale.

Adrian sat down.

"No."

Thomas continued.

"The account has been active for twenty-two years."

Adrian looked sick.

"My father is alive?"

"We don't know," Thomas said.

But we all knew what the evidence suggested.

Vanessa sat across the room.

She seemed as stunned as Adrian.

"My father never mentioned him."

Dad looked at her.

"Daniel doesn't share power."

She gave a bitter laugh.

"You know him well."

"I learned."

The night became a war room.

Forensic accountants traced payments.

Attorneys reviewed forged documents.

Security checked every entrance.

I sat in the center of it all, realizing that my failed marriage was only one piece of something that had begun decades earlier.

At four in the morning, Vanessa approached me.

"Can we talk?"

I almost said no.

Then nodded.

We went into the conservatory.

She remained standing.

"I'm sorry."

"That's inadequate."

"I know."

"You helped him humiliate me."

"Yes."

"You slept with my husband."

"Yes."

"You knew he targeted me."

"Not until after."

I studied her.

"Why should I believe anything you say?"

"You shouldn't."

That answer surprised me.

She took out her phone.

"I can give you something instead."

An audio recording.

Daniel's voice.

If she signs before midnight, the authorization becomes much harder to challenge.

Vanessa's voice followed.

And if she refuses?

Then Adrian knows what to do.

The recording ended.

"What did that mean?"

"I thought he meant threaten you financially."

"And now?"

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"Now I don't know."

I handed the phone back.

"Why record your father?"

"Because I learned young that Daniel loves no one."

She touched her stomach.

"I don't want my child growing up around him."

For the first time, I saw Vanessa as something other than the woman in the gold dress.

I didn't forgive her.

But I saw her.

"Is Adrian the father?"

She looked away.

"Vanessa."

"I don't know."

There it was.

Another truth.

"There was someone else?"

"One night."

"Who?"

She shook her head.

"Someone my father introduced me to."

My skin prickled.

"When?"

She gave me the date.

I remembered it.

A Vale Meridian retreat.

Adrian had been away.

So had Daniel.

"Name."

"I never knew his real one."

"Describe him."

Before she could, Adrian entered.

"There's a car outside."

Security was already moving.

Headlights illuminated the driveway.

A black sedan stopped beyond the gates.

No one exited.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?"

An older man's voice spoke.

"Eleanor Ashford?"

"Yes."

"My name is Jonathan Vale."

Adrian heard.

His face collapsed.

The voice continued.

"Do not trust Daniel Cross."

Adrian took one step toward me.

"Dad?"

Silence.

Then Jonathan said:

"Adrian?"

My husband looked as if seventeen years of grief had just split open inside him.

"You're alive."

Jonathan didn't answer that.

Instead he said:

"Daniel is coming for the original trust."

I looked toward the stairs.

Mom's study.

Jonathan's next words chilled me.

May you like

"And Eleanor, he's already inside the house."

Upstairs, something crashed.
