Chapter 3 - THE FINAL TRIBUNAL

Forty-eight hours later, the grand hall of the State Supreme Court was packed to maximum capacity. National television crews, investigative journalists, and thousands of concerned citizens lined the streets outside, glued to their phone screens as the trial of the century was broadcast live across every social media platform.
The hashtag #JusticeForLeo had been trending globally for two straight days.
At the defense table sat Eleanor Sterling and Richard Sterling, both wearing prison jump suits, flanked by a team of high-powered defense attorneys. Richard’s face was bruised and bandaged from his escape from the burning cabin.
At the prosecution table sat Maya, dressed in a sharp, dignified dark suit. Beside her sat seven-year-old Leo, wearing a neatly fitted navy sweater, calmly holding a fresh box of crayons.
The judge slammed his gavel down, demanding silence in the courtroom. ""We are here to review the extraordinary evidence submitted by the plaintiff regarding the estate of Julian Sterling and the attempted murder charges against Richard and Eleanor Sterling.""
The prosecutor stood up and plugged the black USB drive into the court's media system. High-definition screens throughout the courtroom flickered to life.
""Your Honor,"" the prosecutor announced, ""this audio file was automatically uploaded to a secure cloud server by Julian Sterling moments before his tragic death on the mountain pass.""
The prosecutor clicked play. Julian’s recorded voice echoed through the courtroom speakers, crisp and devastating:
""Richard, put the weapon down! I have already sent the embezzlement ledgers to the federal prosecutors. You can't hide the stolen money anymore!""
Richard’s voice replied, harsh and breathless: ""If you die today, Julian, Mother will make sure the widow gets nothing! The kid is useless! Everything comes to me!""
A sound of a violent struggle followed, a sharp cry of pain from Julian, the sound of breaking branches, and then—silence.
The entire courtroom erupted in gasps. Eleanor collapsed into her chair, hiding her face as camera shutters clicked relentlessly. Richard stared at the floor, his hands shaking in iron handcuffs.
""Furthermore,"" the prosecutor continued, presenting the official documents, ""we have the certified, untampered DNA test from the State Forensic Institute, along with the original grand trust created by the founder of Sterling Timber. Leo Sterling is undeniably the legal and sole heir to the entire Sterling fortune.""
The judge looked down at the defense table with deep disdain. ""The evidence is overwhelming and horrifying. Richard Sterling, you are hereby remanded into custody without bail to face charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and grand embezzlement. Eleanor Sterling, you are remanded without bail as an accessory to murder, corporate fraud, and child endangerment.""
The gavel struck the sound block with a decisive THUD. ""Court is adjourned!""
Cheers echoed throughout the room. Reporters rushed toward Maya, but she ignored the noise, kneeling down in front of her son.
Leo looked at her, his hazel eyes clear and peaceful. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small piece of folded paper. He handed it to Maya.
Maya unfolded it. It was a drawing of a bright, beautiful sun shining over a grand white house with a beautiful garden, and three people holding hands: Julian, Maya, and Leo. Underneath the drawing, written in neat, clear letters, were two words: WE WON.
Six months later.
The morning sun cast a warm, golden light over the sprawling gardens of Willow Creek Manor. The dark, cold atmosphere that had hung over the estate for decades was completely gone, replaced by the sounds of birds singing and children laughing.
Maya had officially transformed the vast Sterling Manor into the Julian Sterling Memorial Foundation for Neurodivergent Children, turning the once-corrupt estate into a world-class sanctuary and learning center for autistic youth and low-income families.
The entire forty-million-dollar fortune was now secured in an ethical trust, managed by an independent board dedicated to education, medical research, and environmental conservation.
Maya sat on the porch, sipping a hot cup of tea, watching Leo play in the grass with a golden retriever puppy they had recently adopted. Leo ran across the lawn, his arms outstretched like an airplane, laughing freely under the blue sky.
He stopped, turned toward Maya, and gave her a wide, dazzling smile.
""I love you, Mommy,"" Leo called out across the yard.

Maya wiped a joyful tear from her cheek, her heart overflowing with peace at last.
""I love you too, my sweet boy,"" she whispered. ""We're finally home."""
