Chapter 2 - THE UNCOVERED TRUTH

The black SUV lingered in the shadows of the motel parking lot, its engine idling like a sleeping beast. Inside her room, Maya pulled the thin curtains shut, her heart pounding against her ribs. She knew Richard wouldn't let them go easily. If Leo had truly witnessed what happened on the cliff edge that night, Richard would do whatever it took to keep the boy silent forever.

""Leo, pack your crayons,"" Maya whispered, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. ""We're going on a little adventure.""

Taking advantage of the storm, Maya slipped out through the motel's rear service exit, carrying Leo through the muddy alleyway toward an old, rusted sedan she had rented under a friend's name hours before. She buckled Leo securely in the back seat, started the engine without turning on the headlights, and drove off into the pitch-black mountain roads leading to the abandoned timber cabin.

The drive was harrowing. Heavy rain blinded the windshield, and lightning ripped through the sky, illuminating the towering pines of Willow Creek. By midnight, they reached the secluded cabin, shrouded in thick fog and overgrown vines. Julian had locked this cabin seven years ago after his father’s passing, claiming it held too many painful memories.

Maya used Julian's old spare key to open the creaking wooden door. The air inside was thick with dust and the scent of aged cedar. Leo walked directly toward the stone fireplace without hesitation, as if he had rehearsed this path a thousand times in his mind. He pointed his finger straight at an oil painting of a red fox hanging above the hearth.

Maya stepped onto a wooden chair, carefully lifting the heavy painting off the wall. Just as Leo had drawn, a small, vintage steel wall safe was embedded in the brickwork behind it.

Her fingers trembled as she turned the mechanical dial: 0... 7... 1... 4.

Click.

The heavy steel door swung open. Inside lay a leather-bound journal, a black USB drive, and a certified legal document sealed in a waterproof envelope—Julian's authentic, legally binding last will and testament, stamped by the state supreme court two days before his death.

Maya opened the journal. Julian's sharp handwriting filled the pages:

""If you are reading this, Maya, it means my fear has come true. Richard has embezzled over fifteen million dollars from the family business to cover his illegal gambling debts in Macau. He discovered that I uncovered the ledger. Eleanor knows, but she is protecting him to preserve the Sterling name. They plan to frame you and strip Leo of his inheritance because Leo is not just my son—he is the sole beneficiary of the original trust created by my grandfather.""

Maya gasped as she flipped through the pages. The document attached was an official, indisputable genetic test confirmed by three independent laboratories: Leo was 100% Julian’s biological son, and the trust fund explicitly stated that if Julian died, the entire fortune—including Sterling Manor and the timber company—would pass directly to Leo, with Maya named as his sole legal guardian until he turned twenty-one.

""They lied about the DNA test,"" Maya whispered, tears streaming down her face. ""They faked everything to ruin us.""

Suddenly, the front door of the cabin was kicked open with a shattering crash.

Cold wind and rain rushed into the room, bringing with it two figures drenched in black slickers. Stepping into the cabin light was Richard Sterling, holding a heavy iron flashlight, flanked by Eleanor, wrapped in a mink coat, her eyes cold as ice.

""I must admit, Maya, you're smarter than I gave you credit for,"" Richard sneered, stepping inside and locking the door behind him. ""We tracked your car's GPS the moment you left the motel.""

""Get away from us, Richard!"" Maya screamed, shoving the journal and the USB drive into her jacket and standing in front of Leo.

""Give me the safe's contents, Maya,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice void of any motherly warmth. ""You don't belong in our world. That boy is a defect. He cannot run a multi-million-dollar corporation. The Sterling legacy belongs to Richard!""

""He's not a defect! He's your grandson!"" Maya yelled back, her eyes blazing with fury. ""And he knows what you did, Richard! He saw you push Julian off that cliff!""

Richard’s face twisted into a grotesque snarl. He pulled a small, illegal firearm from his coat pocket and aimed it directly at Maya. ""Nobody will ever believe a crazy widow and an autistic child. The narrative will be simple: a tragic fire at the old cabin, claiming the lives of Julian's disgraced wife and child.""

""You won't get away with this,"" Maya said, taking a slow step back toward the open hearth.

""I already have,"" Richard chuckled, raising the gun.

Before he could pull the trigger, Leo did something extraordinary. He grabbed a heavy iron poker resting beside the fireplace and slammed it against the glass lantern sitting on the table.

The lantern shattered, spilling burning oil onto the dry wooden floorboards. Flames erupted instantaneously, climbing up the curtains and casting towering shadows across the room.

""You little brat!"" Richard screamed, blinded by the sudden burst of light and smoke.

May you like

""Run, Leo!"" Maya cried. She shoved a heavy wooden table into Richard, knocking him off balance as the gun discharged uselessly into the ceiling.

Maya grabbed Leo, smashed the cabin's rear window with a chair, and scrambled out into the raging storm as flames engulfed the roof. Behind them, screams of panic echoed from inside the burning cabin as Eleanor and Richard scrambled to escape the blaze they had brought upon themselves.
