Chapter 5 - A Promise Worth More Than Gold

I couldn't move.
My father had been dead for seventeen years.
At least that was what I'd believed.
Marcus raised one hand and positioned two guards beside the door.
Lily grabbed my hand.
"Who's Dad?"
I looked at her.
"My father."
"Grandpa?"
The word almost destroyed me.
Marcus checked the camera.
An older man stood outside.
Silver hair.
Thin face.
A scar near his temple.
I knew that face.
Older.
Changed.
But his.
Jonathan Mercer.
My father.
Marcus opened the door only after checking him.
Dad walked inside.
He saw me.
Then Lily.
His eyes filled.
"So Emily finally told you."
I punched him.
I regretted it instantly.
Not because he didn't deserve my anger.
Because Lily saw it.
Dad staggered.
"Daniel."
"Seventeen years."
"I know."
"You let me bury an empty coffin?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Richard."
Of course.
My father had discovered Richard's fraud decades earlier.
Richard arranged an accident.
Dad survived.
Then Richard threatened my mother and me.
Dad disappeared.
Emily found him years later while investigating the shell companies.
"Why didn't you come back?"
"Because every time I tried, Richard reminded me who he could hurt."
He looked at Lily.
"And then there was another person to protect."
I hated that word now.
Protect.
It had become the excuse everyone used for stealing choices from me.
"You all protected me so well I lost seventeen years with my father and seven with my daughter."
Dad lowered his head.
"You're right."
No defense.
That mattered.
Lily approached him.
"Are you really my grandpa?"
He knelt.
"If you'll let me be."
She considered him.
Then offered Mr. Buttons.
"This is my bear."
Dad smiled through tears.
"He's very handsome."
That evening we gathered the evidence.
The FBI was contacted through my attorneys.
Richard's financial network began unraveling.
But one piece was missing.
The original ledger.
Without it, Richard could argue the electronic records were fabricated.
Emily had hidden it.
We searched the apartment.
Nothing.
Then Lily touched her bracelet.
"Mama said this was the key."
The clasp.
Inside it was another tiny engraving.
BELL 314.
Arthur.
We returned to the pawn shop.
Arthur led us to safe-deposit drawer 314.
Inside was the ledger.
And another letter from Emily.
Daniel,
If you've reached this point, you know enough to hate a lot of people.
Please don't.
Richard took years from us. Don't give him another day by letting anger become your life.
Take care of Lily.
And please tell her I never pawned the bracelet because I stopped loving it.
I pawned it because I needed her to learn something I was too afraid to learn myself:
Sometimes asking for help is courage.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Lily slipped her hand into mine.
"Are you sad?"
"Very."
"Me too."
We stood together.
No pretending.
No hiding.
Then Arthur's front window shattered.
Marcus shoved us down.
A brick landed across the floor.
Something was tied around it.
A note.
Thomas picked it up.
His expression changed.
"What?"
He handed it to me.
Four words.
GIVE BACK THE LEDGER.
May you like
Then the lights went out.
And from somewhere behind the counter, Lily screamed my name.
