Chapter 4 - The Name on the Pawn Ticket

Someone could see us.
I looked toward the ceiling.
Camera.
Arthur immediately unplugged the security system.
Thomas pulled the blinds.
"Richard knows," I said.
"He always knew," Thomas replied.
"No. He knows she's with me now."
Marcus arrived with four security officers through the rear entrance.
We moved Lily first.
I kept her beside me.
No more adults deciding she should be hidden while they controlled her life.
At my townhouse, a doctor came to collect DNA samples.
I didn't need the result emotionally.
But Lily deserved certainty.
While we waited, I called Richard.
He answered immediately.
"Daniel."
"You threatened Emily."
Silence.
"She recorded everything."
Another silence.
Then, "Come speak to me."
"No."
"This isn't a telephone conversation."
"You lost the right to decide that."
Richard sighed.
"I protected you."
The phrase made me sick.
"From my daughter?"
"From scandal. From instability. From a woman who would have derailed everything."
"You mean the woman I loved."
"You were twenty-seven."
"And Lily was my child."
"You didn't know."
"Because you made sure I didn't."
Lily was coloring at the dining table twenty feet away.
I lowered my voice.
"Stay away from her."
Richard responded calmly.
"You don't understand what Emily did."
"What did she do?"
"Ask Thomas."
The line disconnected.
I turned.
Thomas was standing behind me.
"What did Emily do?"
His face changed.
"Daniel—"
"Don't."
He sat down.
"Emily didn't just disappear because Richard threatened her."
"Go on."
"She stole evidence."
"Of what?"
"Financial crimes."
Mercer Capital.
My company.
My name.
Thomas explained that Emily had discovered shell companies connected to Richard while working at the architectural firm we acquired.
She copied documents.
Richard found out.
The threats weren't only about pregnancy.
They were about evidence.
"Where is it?"
Thomas looked toward Lily.
"Emily never told me."
I thought about the memory card.
The bracelet.
The ticket.
The special box Lily had mentioned.
"Her apartment."
Lily looked up when she heard me.
"You mean my house?"
"Yes."
"I can show you Mama's box."
We drove there with security.
The apartment was small but warm.
Lily ran to her bedroom.
She returned carrying a blue metal box.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Hospital records.
And an envelope marked DANIEL.
I opened it.
Birth certificate.
Father: Daniel James Mercer.
My knees nearly gave out.
Then the DNA laboratory called.
99.9997 percent probability.
Lily was mine.
I sat beside her.
"Remember when you asked if I wanted to be your daddy?"
She nodded.
"I don't have to wonder anymore."
Her eyes filled.
"Really?"
"Really."
She threw herself against me.
For the first time in eight years, something in my life felt more important than anything I'd built.
Then Lily remembered something.
"Mama had another box."
Thomas looked up.
"Where?"
"Under the floor."
She led us into Emily's bedroom.
One floorboard beneath the bed lifted.
There was a black case underneath.
I opened it.
Documents.
Flash drives.
Bank records.
Enough evidence to destroy Richard.
But on top sat a photograph.
Emily stood beside Richard.
Between them was another man.
My father.
The photograph was dated two years after my father supposedly died.
I stared at it.
Thomas whispered, "Daniel..."
On the back, Emily had written:
YOUR FATHER DIDN'T DIE WHEN THEY TOLD YOU HE DID.
Then someone knocked on the apartment door.
Three slow knocks.
A pause.
May you like
Then a man's voice called from the hallway.
"Daniel? It's Dad."
