Chapter 5 - The Photograph That Exposed The Real Betrayal

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

It landed on the floor.

But nobody moved to pick it up.

Because everyone in that room had already seen enough.

I stared at the image lying beneath the golden lights of the conservatory.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were showing me.

It was Grant.

Standing beside a woman.

A woman I knew.

A woman I trusted.

A woman who was supposed to have no connection to the Bennett family anymore.

My breathing became shallow.

"Claire..."

Natalie's voice was soft.

Almost like she was afraid the truth would break me.

But the truth had already broken me.

This was just showing me how many pieces I had become.

I bent down and picked up the photograph.

My hands were shaking.

"When was this taken?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Grant.

"When?"

His lips parted.

But no words came out.

That was when I knew.

The silence was the answer.

The photograph was not fake.

The meeting happened.

The secret existed.

And Grant knew about it.

"Who is she?"

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Grant looked at the picture.

Then at me.

"Claire..."

I hated the way he said my name.

Like he was about to explain something complicated.

Like the truth was something I needed help understanding.

"I asked you a question."

The room became painfully quiet.

Sloane looked away.

Evelyn closed her eyes for a moment.

Natalie watched Grant carefully.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Finally, Grant spoke.

"Her name is Vanessa Hale."

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction around the room told me it should.

Evelyn immediately looked at her son.

"Grant."

A warning.

A command.

But he ignored her.

For the first time that night, he looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man trapped by his own secrets.

"Vanessa was involved with Bennett Meridian years ago."

"How?"

I asked.

Grant hesitated.

"She was part of the family foundation."

Natalie shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Natalie stepped closer.

"She wasn't just part of the foundation."

She looked directly at Grant.

"She was the reason you changed everything."

My heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Natalie didn't answer immediately.

She looked at my stomach.

Then at the gender reveal box.

Then back at me.

"It means your baby was never the first secret Grant hid from you."

I felt dizzy.

The room suddenly felt too bright.

Too loud.

Too crowded.

I placed one hand on the table beside me.

Because my body was carrying a child.

And I needed to stay standing.

"What secret?"

Grant moved toward me.

"Claire, listen to me."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Not this time."

My voice surprised even me.

Because there was no sadness anymore.

Only anger.

"I spent months believing I was building a family with you."

I looked at him.

"I defended you."

My voice cracked.

"I defended you when people said you were cold."

I swallowed.

"I defended you when people said you only cared about money."

I looked at Evelyn.

"I even defended your family."

Then I looked back at Grant.

"But I was defending a person who didn't exist."

Grant looked hurt.

For a second, I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then I remembered the hotel receipts.

The messages.

The woman beside him.

The folder with my name.

And the photograph.

I remembered everything.

"What happened with Vanessa?"

I asked.

Grant didn't answer.

Natalie did.

"She was pregnant."

The room froze.

My fingers tightened.

"What?"

Grant immediately turned toward Natalie.

"Stop."

But Natalie continued.

"Years ago, before Claire, before Sloane, before this entire performance, Vanessa was pregnant."

I looked at Grant.

His face had gone pale.

"Is that true?"

He said nothing.

And again, silence became his confession.

I felt my heart pounding.

"Where is she?"

Nobody spoke.

Natalie looked at the floor.

"That's the part nobody wanted you to know."

She reached into the folder.

She pulled out another document.

"This is why I was forced to disappear."

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

The first page was a legal document.

The second was a payment record.

The third was a hospital report.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

Because I saw Grant's signature.

My husband's signature.

My hands became cold.

"What did you do?"

I whispered.

Grant looked at me.

"I was trying to fix a mistake."

"A mistake?"

My voice rose.

"You mean a person?"

Nobody spoke.

Grant rubbed his face.

"I was twenty-nine."

I stared at him.

"I didn't know what to do."

"And your solution was to erase someone?"

"No."

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

"I never wanted anyone hurt."

Natalie laughed bitterly.

"That wasn't your decision to make."

The guests were no longer pretending this was a party.

Some had quietly left.

Others stood frozen.

The cameras continued recording.

The world was watching.

And Grant Bennett's perfect image was falling apart in real time.

I looked at the gender reveal box.

The beautiful box.

The box everyone had gathered around.

The box that was supposed to reveal a simple answer.

Boy or girl.

Pink or blue.

But now I knew.

There was something much bigger inside.

"Why did you bring Sloane here?"

I suddenly asked.

Grant looked confused.

"What?"

"Why tonight?"

His expression changed.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

The affair.

The public display.

The timing.

Everything had a reason.

Natalie answered before he could.

"Because tonight wasn't just a gender reveal."

She looked at Evelyn.

"It was supposed to be an announcement."

I turned toward her.

"Announcement of what?"

Evelyn remained silent.

Natalie continued.

"The Bennett family planned to announce that Grant's child would become the next heir."

I frowned.

"Why is that a problem?"

Natalie looked at me.

"Because the heir was supposed to belong to someone else."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

Natalie took a deep breath.

"Claire, the reason Grant was so desperate for this baby..."

She paused.

"The reason his family cared so much about the gender..."

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

"Was because they believed your baby would solve a problem."

I looked at Grant.

"What problem?"

He didn't answer.

Then Sloane suddenly spoke.

"I can explain."

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

But this time, she wasn't afraid of me.

She was afraid of Grant.

"I wasn't supposed to be here tonight."

Grant's face changed.

"Sloane."

She ignored him.

"I was supposed to leave after the announcement."

My eyes narrowed.

"Leave?"

She nodded.

"Grant promised me everything would be finished tonight."

A horrible feeling moved through my chest.

Finished.

"What was supposed to be finished?"

Sloane looked at me.

And whispered:

"The marriage."

The room went silent.

I stared at Grant.

"Your plan was to announce our baby tonight..."

My voice shook.

"And then leave me?"

Grant stepped forward.

"No."

But he didn't sound convincing.

I looked at the stage.

The cameras.

The guests.

The perfect celebration.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

This wasn't just a betrayal.

It was a performance.

They needed me here.

Pregnant.

Smiling.

Standing beside him.

Until the exact moment they no longer needed me.

I turned away from him.

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

I didn't want to look.

But I did.

This time, there was a video.

A security camera recording.

The timestamp was from earlier that evening.

Before I arrived.

I pressed play.

The screen showed the gender reveal room.

Empty.

Except for two people.

Grant.

And Evelyn.

They were standing beside the reveal box.

Talking.

I raised the volume.

My entire body froze when I heard Evelyn's voice.

"Once Claire opens the box, everything will finally belong to us."

Then Grant answered.

"But what if she finds out who put the envelope inside?"

The video continued.

And then the camera turned slightly toward the person standing behind them.

A person I never expected to see.

A person holding the original envelope.

May you like

The person who had changed the entire night before I arrived...

And when the camera captured her face, I dropped my phone because it was my own mother standing beside Grant.
