Chapter 4 - The Secret Grant Buried For Years

The room became silent after I read the message.
"Ask your husband why he buried the truth about..."
The words stopped there.
No explanation.
No name.
Just enough to make my hands shake.
I looked down at my phone again.
The message was still there.
Waiting.
Like someone on the other side wanted me to suffer through every second before discovering the truth.
"Claire?"
Grant's voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
He was watching me carefully.
Not like a husband watching his wife.
Like a man watching someone holding a weapon.
And maybe I was.
Because for the first time in years, I wasn't standing beside him.
I was standing against him.
"What were you about to ask me?"
His question sounded calm.
Too calm.
I knew Grant.
I knew the way he controlled his breathing when he was nervous.
I knew the way his fingers tightened when he was hiding something.
I knew the expression he wore when he wanted people to believe he was still powerful.
But tonight, that expression was cracking.
"You tell me."
My voice was quiet.
"What did you bury?"
Nobody moved.
Evelyn looked away.
Sloane looked toward the exit.
Natalie stood beside me, holding the folder she had kept hidden for four years.
Grant glanced around the room.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the people who had come to celebrate his family.
Then he looked back at me.
"Claire, you don't understand."
I almost laughed.
That sentence again.
The same sentence every person in this family used whenever the truth became dangerous.
"I understand enough."
I held up the folder.
"Enough to know you lied."
Grant stepped closer.
"Give me that."
The room reacted instantly.
Not because of what he said.
Because of how he said it.
The desperation.
The urgency.
The fear.
I pulled the folder closer to my chest.
"No."
A simple word.
But it changed everything.
Because Grant Bennett was used to people saying yes.
Employees.
Business partners.
Friends.
Even family.
Everyone around him had spent years making his life easier.
But I wasn't doing that anymore.
"Claire."
His voice became softer.
The fake anger disappeared.
"I was trying to protect you."
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Because they sounded exactly like the man I used to love.
The man who held my hand when I was sick.
The man who promised me he would always choose me.
But now I knew something.
People could say "I was protecting you" when what they really meant was "I was protecting myself."
"From what?"
I asked.
Grant didn't answer.
Natalie did.
"From the truth about your pregnancy."
The entire room froze.
My heart stopped.
My hand immediately moved to my stomach.
"No."
The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.
Natalie looked at me with sadness.
"I didn't want to tell you this here."
I stared at her.
"Tell me what?"
Grant stepped forward.
"Natalie, don't."
She looked at him.
"You had your chance."
Then she turned back to me.
"The night you announced your pregnancy, Grant didn't celebrate because he was happy."
My eyes moved toward my husband.
"He celebrated because he thought everything was finally going according to plan."
I felt sick.
"What plan?"
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"Claire, you need to leave."
I looked at her.
Of course.
Not an explanation.
Not an apology.
An order.
"I need to leave?"
I repeated.
"After your son brought another woman to my baby's gender reveal?"
Her expression hardened.
"You don't know what you're dealing with."
I looked at her.
"Then explain it."
For the first time, Evelyn Bennett had nothing to say.
That frightened me more than anything.
Because people like Evelyn always had answers.
They always had a strategy.
They always knew the next move.
But now she looked like someone who had just realized the game was over.
Natalie opened the folder again.
She pulled out another document.
"This is why I disappeared."
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a medical record.
My name was printed at the top.
Claire Bennett.
My hands went cold.
I looked at the date.
It was from seven months earlier.
Before I knew I was pregnant.
Before the first ultrasound.
Before Grant told me he was the happiest man alive.
I read the page.
Then I looked up.
"This isn't mine."
Natalie nodded.
"I know."
My breathing became heavier.
"Then why does it have my name?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Grant.
His face had lost all color.
"Grant."
He didn't move.
"Explain."
Still nothing.
The cameras were still recording.
The guests were still watching.
But suddenly none of that mattered.
Because whatever was inside that folder was bigger than a cheating husband.
Bigger than Sloane.
Bigger than a ruined party.
My entire life was sitting inside those pages.
"I found these records when I was investigating Bennett Meridian's private accounts," Natalie said.
She looked at Grant.
"There were payments connected to a private medical clinic."
Grant closed his eyes.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
Guilt.
"Why?"
I whispered.
"Why would my name be there?"
Natalie hesitated.
And that hesitation broke something inside me.
Because I knew the answer was going to hurt.
"The company wasn't just hiding an affair."
She looked at me.
"They were hiding a decision."
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
"What decision?"
Before Natalie could answer, Sloane suddenly spoke.
"Because Grant wasn't the only one who knew."
Everyone turned toward her.
For the first time all night, she wasn't trying to defend herself.
She looked terrified.
"What are you talking about?" Grant asked.
Sloane looked at Evelyn.
Then at the folder.
Then at me.
"I thought you knew."
My stomach dropped.
"Knew what?"
Sloane swallowed.
"The baby..."
She stopped.
The room waited.
My entire body went still.
"The baby was never supposed to be part of the Bennett family plan."
Grant immediately turned toward her.
"Sloane, stop talking."
But it was too late.
Because everyone heard.
I stepped closer.
"What does that mean?"
Sloane looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something unexpected in her eyes.
Not arrogance.
Not jealousy.
Guilt.
"I didn't know how far they would go."
Grant grabbed her arm.
"Enough."
I looked at his hand around her wrist.
Then at his face.
And suddenly I understood.
Sloane wasn't the person controlling this.
She was afraid of him too.
"Let her go."
My voice was cold.
Grant slowly released her.
Sloane took a breath.
Then she whispered:
"The person who ordered the tests wasn't Grant."
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
And Evelyn's face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Because she knew her secret was no longer buried.
My phone vibrated again.
A new message.
This time from the same unknown number.
I opened it.
Only one sentence appeared.
"Look behind you before you open the box."
My blood ran cold.
Slowly, I turned around.
The gender reveal box was still on the stage.
But the silk covering was no longer perfectly arranged.
Someone had moved it.
Someone had opened it before me.
And inside the box was not the envelope I placed there.
There was something else.
Something that was never supposed to be found.
A small photograph was lying on top.
I stepped closer.
May you like
I picked it up.
And when I saw the person standing beside Grant in the picture, I heard someone behind me whisper my name...
