Chapter 2 - The Secret at the Lake House

Claire stepped off the porch onto the lawn.
Her feet felt heavy.
She stared down at the photograph in her hand.
The girl on the swing looked exactly like Claire at eight.
She had the same soft chin.
She had the same striking blue eyes.
Mark scrambled up from the wet grass.
He reached for Claire’s wrist.
“Claire, please do not listen to him.”
Claire pulled her hand away violently.
“Do not touch me, Mark.”
Julian dusted his hands on his trousers.
“Show her the birth certificate, Mark.”
“Or should I tell her about the money?”
Mark’s eyes filled with desperate anger.
“Shut up, Julian!”
“You have no right to be here!”
Claire looked between the two brothers.
“Julian, tell me what happened eight years ago.”
Julian pointed toward the black sedan on the street.
“Get in the car, Claire.”
“I will drive you to the lake house right now.”
Mark stepped directly between Claire and Julian.
“She is not going anywhere with you!”
“You are a convicted felon, Julian!”
“No court will ever believe your story!”
Claire gasped at Mark’s words.
“A felon?”
Mark turned to Claire with a bitter expression.
“He served three years for fraud, Claire.”
“He spent our family’s money on gambling.”
“Now he is blackmailing me for more.”
Julian spat on the driveway.
“I went to prison because I covered for you!”
“I signed those papers for Mother!”
Claire held her head in both hands.
Her mind was spinning out of control.
“Stop shouting!”
“Both of you!”
Toby stood at the screen door, crying quietly.
Claire looked back at her frightened son.
She knew she had to stay calm for him.
She walked over to Toby and hugged him tightly.
“It is okay, sweetie.”
“Go to your room and watch your show.”
Toby nodded and ran upstairs.
Claire turned back to face the lawn.
Julian was already walking toward his car.
“The truth is at the lake house, Claire.”
“If you want your daughter, come tonight.”
Julian got into his sedan and drove away.
Mark rushed to Claire’s side on the porch.
“He is setting a trap, Claire.”
“He wants to extort us for my mother’s money.”
Claire looked Mark dead in the eye.
“Was my daughter born healthy?”
Mark hesitated for a single second.
That single second broke Claire’s heart completely.
“She had severe breathing complications, Claire.”
“The doctors said she would not survive.”
“My mother insisted on taking her to a specialist.”
Claire stared at him in utter horror.
“You told me she was buried!”
“You gave me a tiny casket to cry over!”
Mark grabbed Claire’s hands, tears streaming down his face.
“My mother said it was better for you!”
“You were so weak after the delivery!”
“The doctors said you might not survive another breakdown!”
Claire slapped Mark across the face.
The crack echoed across the quiet neighborhood.
Mark did not try to block her.
He simply stood there, bleeding from his lip.
“You stole eight years of my daughter’s life.”
“I was trying to keep our family together!”
“My mother controlled everything!”
Claire walked past him into the house.
She grabbed her car keys from the counter.
She packed a small bag for Toby.
Mark followed her into the kitchen.
“Where are you going?”
“I am going to the lake house.”
“You cannot go there alone, Claire!”
“My mother has armed guards on that property!”
Claire stopped in her tracks.
“Why would a grandmother need guards for a child?”
Mark looked down at the kitchen tile.
“Because Eleanor never intended to give her back.”
Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine.
She realized the full scale of the deception.
Her mother-in-law was not just keeping a secret.
She was keeping a prisoner.
Claire loaded Toby into her SUV.
Mark stood in the driveway, watching helplessly.
“If you go there, Eleanor will destroy us all!”
Claire did not answer him.
She backed her car out of the driveway.
She drove straight onto the highway heading north.
The three-hour drive felt like an eternity.
Dark rain began falling against the windshield.
Toby fell asleep in the back seat.
Claire kept her eyes locked on the road ahead.
At midnight, she pulled up to the lake house gate.
The heavy iron gates were locked with a chain.
A guard shack sat just inside the fence.
A man with a flashlight stepped out into the rain.
It was not a guard.
It was Julian.
He unlocked the chain and pushed the gate open.
Claire drove her SUV onto the gravel driveway.
She parked in front of the two-story stone house.
Lights were burning bright on the main floor.
Julian walked up to her window.
“Eleanor is inside with the girl.”
“She knows we are here.”
Claire stepped out into the cold rain.
“Is my daughter really inside that house?”
Julian nodded solemnly.
“Her name is Clara.”
“She thinks Eleanor is her biological mother.”
Claire felt her throat tighten with agony.
She walked up the wide stone steps to the front door.
She did not knock.
She pushed the heavy door open.
The grand foyer was decorated with fine paintings.
An elderly woman sat in a high-backed armchair.
It was Eleanor Hale.
She wore a dark silk dress and pearl necklace.
A eight-year-old girl sat beside her on the rug.
The girl was reading a picture book.
Eleanor looked up at Claire without any surprise.
“You should not have come here, Claire.”
Claire stared at the little girl on the rug.
The girl had Claire’s exact shade of blonde hair.
She had a small birthmark near her left wrist.
It was the same birthmark Claire had on her own arm.
Claire fell to her knees on the marble floor.
“Clara...”
The little girl looked up from her book in confusion.
She looked at Eleanor, then at Claire.
“Grandma, who is this lady?”
Eleanor placed a cold hand on the girl’s shoulder.
“She is nobody, darling.”
“She is just an uninvited guest.”
Eleanor stood up slowly, using her cane.
She looked down at Claire with pure contempt.
“Mark signed away his parental rights eight years ago.”
“I paid for full legal custody under a private adoption.”
Claire stood up, her entire body shaking with rage.
“Mark had no right to give away my child!”
Eleanor smiled coldly.
“You signed the papers too, Claire.”
Claire froze in absolute shock.
“I never signed anything!”
Eleanor reached into a mahogany cabinet.
She pulled out a yellowed document.
She tossed it onto the table in front of Claire.
Claire looked down at the bottom line.
Her own signature was written in dark blue ink.
Beside her signature was a notary stamp.
The notary was Mark Hale.
Julian stepped into the foyer behind Claire.
“That signature is a forgery, Claire.”
“Mark forged your name the night you were in the ICU.”
Eleanor turned her sharp eyes toward Julian.
“You hold your tongue, Julian!”
“You took five hundred thousand dollars to keep quiet!”
Julian took a legal folder from his jacket.
“I kept quiet until I found out what you were doing to her.”
Julian opened the folder and held up a document.
“This is Eleanor’s medical evaluation from last week.”
“She has advanced aggressive dementia.”
“She is legally unfit to care for any child.”
Eleanor’s face contorted with sudden fury.
“That is a lie!”
A police siren suddenly blared in the driveway outside.
Red and blue lights flashed through the front windows.
Two police officers rushed into the foyer.
Mark walked in right behind them.
May you like
Mark pointed directly at Claire and Julian.
“Officers, those two people are trying to kidnap my daughter!”
