Chapter 1 - The Silver Locket in the Dirt

Claire dropped her paintbrush onto the wooden table.

The glass frame cracked under her hand.

Her six-year-old son, Toby, stood in the doorway.

He held a worn velvet box.

“A man gave this to me at the playground.”

Claire stared at the velvet box.

Her fingers trembled as she took it.

Inside lay a silver engraved locket.

It was the exact locket she buried eight years ago.

It contained her late daughter’s infant footprint.

Her daughter had died in the hospital hours after birth.

At least, that was what her husband told her.

Claire looked down at Toby.

“What did the man look like?”

“He had a scar near his eye.”

Claire felt her stomach drop instantly.

That scar belonged to her husband’s estranged brother, Julian.

Julian had disappeared eight years ago.

He left the family after a bitter argument over money.

Claire stood up from her chair.

She walked straight to the window.

A dark sedan sat across the street.

The headlights flashed twice.

Then the car pulled away slowly.

Claire pulled her phone from her pocket.

She called her husband, Mark.

The line rang four times.

“Mark, where are you right now?”

“I am still at the architecture office, honey.”

Claire heard soft music in the background.

It was not the sound of an office.

It was the melody of a hotel lobby.

“Are you sure you are alone?”

Mark hesitated for three seconds.

“Of course I am alone.”

“Is everything okay with Toby?”

Claire looked back at the velvet box.

“Julian was just at the park.”

Mark went completely silent.

The background music cut off abruptly.

“Did he touch Toby?”

“No, but he gave him something.”

“What did he give him, Claire?”

“My daughter’s silver locket.”

Mark gasped softly over the line.

“Stay inside the house.”

“Lock all the doors.”

“I am coming home right now.”

The line went dead.

Claire locked the front door immediately.

She checked every window in the living room.

Toby sat on the rug, drawing a picture.

“Mom, is Uncle Julian bad?”

Claire knelt beside her son.

“Why do you ask that, Toby?”

“He said my sister is waiting for us.”

Claire stopped breathing for a moment.

“Your sister died before you were born.”

Toby shook his head firmly.

“The man said she is living in the white house.”

“Which white house, Toby?”

“The house near the blue lake.”

Claire’s heart pounded against her ribs.

Her husband’s mother owned a lake house.

It was three hours north of the city.

Claire had not visited the lake house in years.

Mark always claimed the property was abandoned.

He said the foundation was unsafe.

Claire walked into Mark’s home office.

She opened the top desk drawer.

It was locked.

She used a small painting knife to force the latch.

The drawer popped open with a quiet click.

Inside was a stack of bank statements.

Every month, Mark transferred two thousand dollars to a private account.

The account owner was listed as Clara Vance.

Clara was the name Claire had chosen for her daughter.

Claire’s hands shook uncontrollably.

She found a folded medical receipt under the statements.

It was dated three months ago.

It listed pediatric asthma medication.

The patient’s name was Clara Vance.

The address listed was the lake house.

Claire heard tires crunching on the driveway outside.

Mark was back.

She shoved the documents into her purse.

She closed the desk drawer quickly.

Mark rushed through the front door.

His tie was loose.

His forehead was slick with sweat.

“Claire, where is the locket?”

Claire held out the silver locket.

Mark reached for it hastily.

Claire pulled her hand back.

“Why does Julian have this, Mark?”

Mark took a deep breath.

“Julian stole it from our mother’s house years ago.”

“He is trying to ruin us, Claire.”

“He wants money from my father’s estate.”

Claire stared into Mark’s eyes.

“Who is Clara Vance?”

Mark’s face lost all color.

He took a step backward.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“I found the bank transfers in your desk.”

Mark lowered his head.

“It is not what you think.”

“Then tell me what it is, Mark.”

“Clara is Julian’s secret daughter.”

Claire blinked in total disbelief.

“Julian’s daughter has my lost child’s name?”

“Julian named her after your daughter to hurt us.”

“I pay her medical bills because Julian abandoned her.”

Claire looked at Mark’s pale face.

He sounded so convincing.

He reached out to touch her arm.

“I was trying to protect you from the pain.”

Toby walked into the room holding his drawing.

“Daddy, why is Uncle Julian outside again?”

Mark turned toward the window immediately.

A tall man stood near the porch steps.

Julian wore a faded dark jacket.

He held a thick brown envelope in his hand.

Mark rushed toward the front door.

“Stay inside, Claire!”

Mark slammed the door behind him.

Claire ran to the front window.

She watched her husband approach his brother.

Julian pointed a finger at Mark’s chest.

Mark tried to grab the brown envelope.

Julian pushed Mark backward onto the grass.

Julian looked up toward the window.

He caught Claire’s eye.

He raised the brown envelope high in the air.

He mouth-worded four clear words.

“She is still alive.”

Mark tackled Julian to the ground.

The brown envelope tore open during the struggle.

Photographs scattered across the damp grass.

Claire ran out onto the front porch.

She picked up the nearest photograph.

It showed an eight-year-old girl with Claire’s blue eyes.

The girl sat on a swing at the lake house.

Behind the girl stood Mark’s mother, Eleanor.

On the back of the photo, a date was handwritten.

The date was yesterday.

Claire looked at her husband on the lawn.

Mark stared at her, unable to speak.

Julian stood up, wiping mud from his coat.

May you like

“He lied to you for eight years, Claire.”

“Your daughter never died in that hospital.”
