Chapter 6 - The Woman Beneath The House

The footsteps continued.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming closer.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
I stood there staring at the basement stairs, unable to understand the words Daniel had just said.
Emily was alive.
My wife.
The woman I buried.
The woman whose photographs I kept locked away because looking at them hurt too much.
Alive.
Inside this house.
For years.
My mind rejected it.
But my heart...
My heart already knew.
Because there had always been questions.
Questions nobody answered.
Questions I stopped asking because the pain was too heavy.
Why had Emily's car been found so far from the accident location?
Why were there missing hours in the police report?
Why had Daniel refused to discuss that night?
Why had my wife's personal belongings disappeared before I could collect them?
I thought I was grieving.
Now I wondered if I had been lied to.
The basement door remained open.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice came from below.
"Ethan."
My knees almost gave out.
Because I knew that voice.
I knew it better than my own.
Six years disappeared in one second.
The hospital room.
The last conversation.
The way she smiled at me before leaving the house.
The promise she made.
"I'll be back before dinner."
She never came home.
Until now.
"Emily?"
My voice broke.
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I turned toward him.
"You knew?"
His silence answered.
"You knew she was alive?"
Daniel looked destroyed.
"I knew she survived."
The anger inside me exploded.
"You knew my wife was alive and you let me bury her?"
"I thought she was dead."
"What?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"The night of the accident, I found her car. I found the wreckage. I found her ring."
He looked at the wedding ring in his hand.
"But I also found something else."
"What?"
"A message."
My breathing stopped.
"From Emily."
Daniel reached into his jacket again.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Old.
Damaged.
The edges were burned.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My hands shook as I took it.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, they found me.
I couldn't read further.
My vision blurred.
Sarah looked over my shoulder.
"What does it say?"
I continued.
Do not trust the hospital.
Do not trust the reports.
Protect Noah.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Then I saw the final line.
The one that made my blood turn cold.
The person controlling everything is closer than you think.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Dr. Hale looked away.
Daniel looked terrified.
Sarah looked confused.
And Noah...
Noah was staring at the basement.
"Dad."
I turned.
"What?"
He pointed.
"Mommy used to go down there."
The room froze.
"What did you say?"
Noah looked at me.
"When Mommy was here, she told me never to open that door."
My heart started pounding.
"You remember?"
He nodded.
"She said she was hiding something important."
I looked at Daniel.
"You knew about the basement?"
He nodded slowly.
"Emily used it."
"For what?"
"To hide evidence."
I looked toward the stairs.
"And you never searched?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"I did."
"Then why didn't you find her?"
Because he didn't answer quickly enough.
I understood.
"You weren't looking for her."
Daniel looked at me.
"I was trying to keep people away from her."
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then the basement lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And suddenly, from downstairs, a sound echoed.
A door opening.
Not the basement door.
Another door.
A hidden door.
Daniel's face changed instantly.
"No."
"What?"
He moved toward the stairs.
"Ethan, get Noah away from here."
I grabbed his arm.
"What is down there?"
Daniel looked at me.
"The place where Emily kept the truth."
I followed him.
Sarah stayed close with Noah.
Dr. Hale remained behind.
I noticed.
And I remembered.
Every time someone had a chance to tell me the truth...
They didn't.
We reached the bottom of the stairs.
The basement was different from what I remembered.
I had barely used it.
Storage boxes.
Old furniture.
Nothing unusual.
But behind a large shelf near the back wall was a narrow opening.
A hidden room.
Daniel pushed the shelf aside.
Inside was a small office.
A desk.
A computer.
Hundreds of files.
Photographs.
Medical documents.
Everything Emily had collected.
I walked inside slowly.
My wife's handwriting covered the walls.
Names.
Dates.
Hospitals.
Payments.
People.
Then I saw my own name.
Written dozens of times.
I touched the paper.
"Why was she investigating me?"
Daniel shook his head.
"She wasn't investigating you."
"Then why?"
"She was trying to prove you were being used."
I turned.
"What?"
Daniel looked at the files.
"Ethan, you weren't the enemy."
I stared at him.
"Then who was?"
Before Daniel could answer, the computer screen suddenly turned on.
Everyone froze.
The monitor was old.
Disconnected.
But it powered up.
A video file appeared.
No title.
No date.
Only one name.
Emily.
My heart stopped.
I clicked it.
The screen showed my wife.
Alive.
Sitting in this exact room.
Older than the last time I saw her.
Tired.
Scared.
But alive.
My hand covered my mouth.
Noah whispered:
"Mommy."
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"If Ethan is watching this..."
She paused.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I know Daniel found him."
I looked at my brother.
He looked away.
Emily continued.
"Ethan, I'm sorry."
The video shook slightly.
Like she was recording in a hurry.
"I tried to come home."
My eyes filled.
"I tried."
She looked behind her.
Fear crossed her face.
"But they wouldn't let me."
The screen glitched.
Then came back.
Emily leaned closer.
"The person who destroyed our family wasn't trying to hurt Noah."
A pause.
"They were trying to replace you."
I stopped breathing.
"What?"
The video continued.
"Everything they did was designed to make you doubt yourself. To make you believe you weren't enough."
The camera moved.
Someone was approaching.
Emily looked terrified.
"If you're watching this, it means I failed to stop them."
The video froze.
Then a final sentence appeared on the screen.
"Do not trust the person standing beside you."
Everyone looked at each other.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Because there were only four adults in that room.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Dr. Hale.
And me.
Then the computer made a sound.
A new file opened automatically.
A live camera feed.
My entire body went cold.
Because the camera wasn't showing the basement.
May you like
It was showing the mansion entrance.
And standing at the front door was someone who looked exactly like me.
