Chapter 7 - The Revelation

Ethan didn't look at his furious fiancée. He didn't look at the antique piano. His eyes locked onto the small, crumpled form on the floor.
Lily gasped, her eyes flying open as a terrified wail tore from her throat. Ethan moved faster than he had in his entire life. He dropped to his knees, his car keys slipping from his hand and striking the marble like a solitary bell. He gently cradled the crying child's head, checking for blood.
When Lily looked up at him through her tears, time stopped.
Ethan stopped breathing. Staring back at him was the exact, unmistakable shade of gray-green eyes he saw in his own mirror every morning. The shape of her brow, the stubborn set of her jaw—it was looking at a ghost of himself.
"Ethan, darling, the maid's brat was ruining your mother's—" Victoria started, her voice shrill.

Rosa burst into the parlor, her face pale as death. She fell to her knees, ripping Lily from Ethan's arms, sobbing uncontrollably as she checked her daughter's head. Ethan looked at Rosa. The maid's uniform seemed to melt away, and suddenly, he saw the brilliant, laughing biochemistry student from Queens.
