Chapter 8 - The Daughter I Almost Lost

Daniel met the attorney downstairs.

Her name was Helen Shaw.

She carried a sealed envelope.

"Your father instructed my firm to hold this until the birth of your first biological child."

Daniel stared.

"Seventeen years?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because those were his instructions."

Daniel brought Claire into the meeting.

He wanted no more secrets.

Helen opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Son,

If you're reading this, then you've become a father.

That means you finally understand why I made choices you may never forgive.

Daniel paused.

Claire touched his hand.

He continued.

Richard explained that Meridian had never been intended as an empire.

It was designed as a family trust to fund hospitals, housing programs, scholarships, and community businesses.

Thomas had wanted to turn it into a private fortune.

Richard refused.

The conflict destroyed their partnership.

At the bottom was one final instruction.

Daniel's first child would inherit controlling authority.

But her parents could dissolve Meridian entirely.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"What do you want?"

She seemed surprised.

"You're asking me?"

"It's Lily's future."

Claire read the letter again.

Then looked toward their daughter.

"I don't want her inheriting a war."

Daniel nodded.

"Neither do I."

They decided to dissolve the hidden corporate structure and move legitimate assets into a transparent charitable foundation and protected family trust.

It cost Daniel hundreds of millions in potential control.

He didn't hesitate.

News spread.

Partners questioned him.

Executives panicked.

Daniel continued.

For once, losing power felt like freedom.

Thomas's scheme collapsed under the combined evidence.

Natalie cooperated with investigators.

Margaret finally returned publicly to Daniel's life.

But Daniel still didn't have Claire.

When Claire left the hospital, she returned to Rebecca's house.

Daniel helped carry Lily's things to the car.

Then he stepped away.

Claire looked at him.

"You're not asking me to come home?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because home isn't a place I get to choose for you."

Claire stared at him for several seconds.

Then she got into the car.

Daniel watched them leave.

Three months passed.

Daniel visited Lily according to Claire's schedule.

He learned bottles.

Baths.

Nap routines.

He arrived on time.

Every time.

When work called during visits, he ignored it.

One afternoon, Claire watched him sleeping on Rebecca's sofa with Lily on his chest.

Something changed.

She didn't tell him.

But the next week, she invited him to dinner.

Then another.

Then a walk.

They talked about everything.

Including Natalie.

Daniel never minimized it.

"I chose to betray you."

Claire looked down.

"Yes."

"I can't change that."

"No."

"But I can decide what kind of man makes every choice after it."

Claire's eyes filled.

"Do you still love me?"

Daniel answered immediately.

"Yes."

"That isn't enough."

"I know."

She looked at him.

"Do you understand how important that is?"

"Now I do."

Claire nodded.

Weeks later, Daniel brought Lily back after an afternoon visit.

Claire stood at the door.

"Come inside."

Daniel entered.

On the table was a key.

His penthouse key.

He looked at Claire.

"I'm not moving back," she said.

Daniel's hope disappeared.

"Okay."

"But I want to see the nursery."

Daniel's heart accelerated.

They drove downtown.

The penthouse looked different.

Daniel had removed most of the imposing furniture.

The nursery remained exactly as Claire left it.

She entered carrying Lily.

Daniel stayed by the door.

Claire placed their daughter into the crib.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Claire noticed something beneath the mattress.

A small envelope.

Daniel hadn't put it there.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Thomas Vale.

Natalie.

And another man.

Claire turned it over.

Three words were written on the back.

HE STARTED EVERYTHING.

Daniel stared at the third man's face.

He knew him.

Everyone in Chicago business knew him.

And that man currently controlled one of Daniel's largest companies.

Daniel whispered his name.

May you like

Claire's phone immediately rang.

The caller ID showed the same man.
