Chapter 6 - The Night My Empire Turned Against Me

Daniel nearly dropped the receiver.

His mother had supposedly died twenty-six years earlier.

He remembered the funeral.

The closed coffin.

His father refusing to let him see her.

"This isn't funny."

"I'm not asking you to believe me yet."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Where's Claire?"

A pause.

"With me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Put her on."

Another pause.

Then:

"Daniel?"

Claire.

His knees nearly gave way.

"Claire."

"I'm okay."

"The baby?"

"She's okay."

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you yet."

"Claire, please."

"I need you to listen."

Daniel looked at the others.

"I'm listening."

"Thomas has been using your companies to reconstruct Meridian. Natalie helped him."

"I know."

"But they're not trying to steal the company."

"What are they doing?"

"They're trying to destroy the trust before our daughter is born."

"Why?"

Claire's voice softened.

"Because the trust contains proof."

"Of what?"

"Your father's death."

Daniel went still.

Claire continued.

"Your mother survived because she discovered what Thomas was doing. Your father helped her disappear."

"Why leave me?"

"To keep you alive."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Everything he'd believed about his childhood cracked apart.

"Where are you?"

"Daniel, there's something else."

"What?"

"Someone just found us."

The line went dead.

Daniel shouted her name into silence.

Michael immediately traced the call.

A rural property outside Lake Geneva.

They drove through the night.

When they arrived, the house was empty.

But there were signs Claire had been there.

Prenatal vitamins.

Her suitcase.

A mug still warm.

Daniel searched upstairs.

In a bedroom, he found a woman unconscious but breathing.

Margaret Carter.

His mother.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably her.

Daniel stood frozen.

Her eyes opened.

She whispered his name.

He sat beside her.

For one moment, the empire, the betrayal, the affair, the money—everything disappeared.

He was twelve again.

"Mom?"

Margaret touched his face.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel couldn't speak.

"Claire?"

"Thomas took her."

Daniel stood immediately.

Margaret grabbed his wrist.

"Wait."

"He has my wife."

"And he wants you angry."

"I am angry."

"That's how he controls people."

The words stopped him.

Margaret explained that Thomas had spent decades believing Meridian belonged to him.

Richard discovered Thomas had been stealing.

When Margaret found proof, Thomas threatened the family.

Richard staged Margaret's death.

Then Richard himself died before he could expose Thomas.

"Did Thomas kill him?"

Margaret's eyes filled.

"I believe he caused what happened, but the proof is in the original trust archive."

"Where?"

Margaret looked at him.

"The nursery."

Daniel froze.

Claire had been closer than anyone realized.

"The crib," Margaret said.

"Your father designed the hiding place before you ever married. Claire discovered it from old architectural plans."

Daniel called Rebecca.

"Go to the nursery. Check the crib."

Rebecca returned ten minutes later.

"I found something."

A sealed metal tube.

Inside were original trust documents and a handwritten statement from Richard.

Enough to establish ownership.

Enough to expose years of fraud.

And attached was an audio recording.

Thomas threatening Richard.

Daniel finally had evidence.

His phone rang.

Natalie.

"Bring me the original trust."

Daniel said nothing.

Natalie continued.

"Midnight. Carter Tower."

"Claire?"

"Alive."

"Let me hear her."

Silence.

Then Claire's voice.

"Daniel, don't give them—"

The call cut.

Natalie returned.

"Midnight."

Daniel looked at Michael.

They both knew it was a trap.

Daniel also knew he would go.

At 11:58, he entered Carter Tower alone.

The lobby was dark.

The elevator opened automatically.

Floor 47.

Daniel stepped inside.

When the doors opened again, Natalie was waiting.

She smiled.

Then she moved aside.

Claire sat across the room.

And beside her stood Thomas Vale.

Thomas extended his hand.

"The trust, Daniel."

Daniel reached inside his coat.

But Claire suddenly looked past him.

Her eyes widened.

May you like

"Daniel, behind you—"

The lights went out.
