Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind the Photograph

The figure outside the window did not move.
Neither did we.
For a few seconds, the entire room existed in complete silence.
The kind of silence that came before something terrible happened.
Shadow stood near the glass, his body low, his teeth slightly visible.
Not attacking.
Waiting.
Watching.
I held the phone in my hand.
The photograph was still on the screen.
The woman.
The woman who looked like me.
The woman someone claimed was my real mother.
My entire life had been built around one truth.
Giovanni Moretti was my father.
Elena Moretti was my mother.
They raised me.
They loved me.
They protected me.
Now, in one night, everything I knew had been turned upside down.
My father was alive.
My uncle was alive.
My identity was a secret.
And now there was another woman outside my window.
A woman who might be the beginning of everything.
Or the reason everything fell apart.
"Nobody moves."
My father's voice cut through the darkness.
I looked at him.
He was staring at the window.
Not with fear.
With recognition.
"You know her."
It wasn't a question.
Giovanni looked away.
That was enough.
I felt something break inside me.
"Father."
He closed his eyes.
"Alessandro..."
"No."
My voice was calm.
But everyone in the room knew what that meant.
"No more."
I stepped closer.
"No more half-truths. No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle."
My father looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
The strongest man I had ever known looked ashamed.
"Her name is Elena."
The room froze.
The same name.
My mother's name.
But impossible.
"I thought she was dead."
My father nodded.
"She wanted you to think that."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
Before he could answer, the figure outside moved.
Everyone reacted.
Giovanni Ferrara raised his weapon.
Luca moved toward Isabella.
Shadow barked once.
The window slowly opened from the outside.
Nobody breathed.
Then a woman's hand appeared.
Old.
Shaking.
Holding a small photograph.
The same kind of photograph that had started all of this.
She stepped inside.
And when the light touched her face, I understood why the picture felt familiar.
She looked at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
"Alessandro."
The way she said my name was different.
Not like someone meeting a stranger.
Like someone seeing a child they had lost.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because some part of me recognized her.
Not from memory.
From something deeper.
She looked at my father.
"You kept him."
Giovanni lowered his eyes.
"I protected him."
Her expression changed.
"You hid him."
Silence.
I looked between them.
The two people who had shaped my entire life.
Two people who had loved me.
Two people who had lied to me.
"Explain."
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
The woman looked at me.
"My name is Elena."
I swallowed.
"I know."
She shook her head.
"No."
A tear moved down her face.
"You know the name."
A pause.
"But you don't know me."
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
She stepped closer.
I noticed she was older than the photograph.
Of course she was.
Years had passed.
Years I had lived.
Years she had spent away.
"Why?"
That was the only question I could ask.
Why did you leave?
Why did you let me believe you were dead?
Why did everyone lie?
Elena looked at Giovanni.
Then at Victor.
Her expression changed when she saw him.
"You brought him here."
Victor smiled.
"I brought him the truth."
"No."
Her voice became cold.
"You brought him pain."
Victor laughed softly.
"Pain creates strength."
I looked at him.
"You knew she was alive."
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Since the beginning."
My hands tightened.
The beginning.
That phrase kept returning.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone had a piece.
Everyone except me.
I looked at Elena.
"What happened to my real parents?"
The room went silent.
Elena looked down.
"Alessandro..."
"Please."
I didn't say it angrily.
I said it because I needed the answer.
She took a breath.
"Your biological father was named Daniel Russo."
The name meant nothing.
But the way everyone reacted told me it should.
My father looked at Victor.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Daniel was the first person who tried to destroy the Order."
Elena continued.
"He discovered what they were doing."
"What were they doing?"
She looked at me.
"Building power through families like ours."
A pause.
"Using children as insurance."
I felt cold.
"What does that mean?"
Elena's eyes filled with sadness.
"It means you were never just a child to them."
Nobody spoke.
"They saw you as an inheritance."
The room became heavier.
Victor stepped forward.
"Now you understand."
I turned toward him.
"You knew all this."
"Yes."
"Why?"
His answer was simple.
"Because I was there."
My father moved.
"You don't get to rewrite history."
Victor looked at him.
"You already did."
The tension between them was impossible to ignore.
Two men who had spent years fighting over the same thing.
Me.
I looked at Elena.
"Why did you let them take me?"
Her face collapsed.
"I didn't."
A pause.
"They took you from me."
My heart stopped.
She continued.
"When Daniel discovered the Order, they came after us."
Her voice shook.
"I tried to run with you."
"Then what happened?"
She looked at Giovanni.
And that answer hurt.
Because Giovanni looked away.
"Your father found us."
I stared at Giovanni.
"You knew?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
"Because Daniel asked me to protect you."
Silence.
The room disappeared.
"You knew my real father?"
"Yes."
"And you took me?"
My father's eyes filled.
"I saved you."
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to hate him.
But I couldn't.
Because I knew him.
I knew the man who taught me to fight.
The man who stayed awake when I was sick.
The man who would have died for me.
But love did not erase lies.
It only made them harder to accept.
Elena walked toward me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like she was approaching someone who might disappear.
"I spent every day looking for you."
I didn't move.
"I thought I would never see you again."
Her hand reached toward my face.
Then stopped.
She didn't touch me.
She waited.
Like she knew she hadn't earned that right.
That hurt more.
Because I wanted to let her.
But I didn't know how.
Then Shadow suddenly turned.
Not toward the window.
Not toward the door.
Toward Victor.
The dog growled.
Everyone looked.
Victor's expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Shadow stepped between me and Victor.
And then the old phone inside his collar vibrated again.
Everyone froze.
I slowly reached down.
The screen lit up.
One new message.
From the same unknown number.
This time there was no photograph.
Only a sentence.
"Victor is not the one who betrayed you."
I looked at Victor.
His face had gone pale.
Then another message appeared.
And this one contained a name.
May you like
A name that made my father step backward.
Because it belonged to the person standing closest to me.
