Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Locked Door

Shadow did not bark.
He growled.
There was a difference.
A bark was a warning.
A growl was a promise.
The German shepherd stood in front of the locked study door, his body tense, his eyes fixed on the darkness behind it.
Nobody moved.
Not even my father.
That scared me more than anything.
Giovanni Moretti was a man who survived wars, betrayal, and enemies who spent decades trying to destroy him.
I had never seen fear in his eyes.
Until now.
"Father."
He looked at the door.
"Stay away from it."
The way he said it made everyone freeze.
Not an order.
A warning.
I stepped forward.
"Why?"
He looked at me.
Because for the first time, I wasn't looking at the powerful man whose name controlled half the city.
I was looking at my father.
A man who had spent years running from something.
"Because Victor knows that room better than anyone."
The name hung in the air.
Victor Morelli.
The uncle I never knew existed.
The man erased from every family record.
The man who had just called me from inside my own house.
I looked at the lock.
Then back at my father.
"You said he was gone."
My father didn't answer.
"Didn't you?"
His jaw tightened.
"I said he disappeared."
A pause.
"I never said he died."
The room became silent.
Another lie.
Another missing piece.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was reaching the point where nothing could surprise me anymore.
"My entire life has been built on things you didn't tell me."
My father looked at me.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
"And now?"
I pointed toward the study.
"He's inside my house."
No one answered.
Because I was right.
The very thing my father had spent years preventing had already happened.
Shadow moved closer to the door.
He sniffed the bottom crack.
Then he looked back at Isabella.
She stepped forward slowly.
"Shadow..."
The dog looked at her.
Then at me.
Like he was waiting for permission.
I nodded.
The dog lowered his body.
Ready.
Giovanni Ferrara moved toward the door.
"I'll open it."
"No."
My father stopped him.
Everyone looked at him.
"Nobody opens that door."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
His expression changed.
"Because Victor doesn't hide behind doors."
A pause.
"He hides things behind people."
Before I could ask what that meant, the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every screen in the room turned on.
The television.
The security monitors.
The computer.
All of them.
Static filled the screens.
Then one image appeared.
The study.
A live camera feed.
We were watching ourselves from inside the room.
My stomach tightened.
Victor had installed cameras.
Not recently.
Not tonight.
Years ago.
He had been watching this house before I even knew he existed.
Then a message appeared on the largest screen.
WELCOME HOME, ALESSANDRO.
Nobody spoke.
Another line appeared.
YOU FINALLY OPENED YOUR EYES.
My father stepped closer.
"Victor."
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
A younger version of my father appeared.
Years ago.
Standing in this same study.
With someone beside him.
A man whose face was hidden.
But whose voice I recognized.
Victor.
"I told you what would happen if you refused."
My father's younger voice answered.
"You don't own my family."
Victor laughed.
"That's where you're wrong."
The video paused.
Then a new image appeared.
A document.
A contract.
A signature.
My father's name.
But beneath it was another name.
A name I had never seen.
Elena Moretti.
My mother.
I looked at Isabella.
She looked away.
"You knew."
Her eyes filled.
"Not everything."
"Enough."
She stepped closer.
"Alessandro..."
I turned toward her.
"No."
My voice was quiet.
"But I need the truth."
For years, everyone had decided what truth I could handle.
I was done.
Isabella looked at the screen.
"Your mother didn't leave because she wanted to."
My father closed his eyes.
I felt something inside me shift.
"What?"
Isabella continued.
"Victor forced her to choose."
"Choose what?"
Her voice became softer.
"Your father's life."
Silence.
The answer was worse than I expected.
Victor wasn't just destroying my family.
He had been controlling it.
My mother.
My father.
Isabella.
Everyone.
The screen suddenly changed again.
A live camera feed from outside the study door.
The angle showed the hallway.
And standing there...
Was a man.
Older.
Wearing a dark suit.
Holding a small envelope.
The same envelope that had disappeared.
The same envelope my father had brought.
The same envelope that somehow carried my handwriting.
My father looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
"He's here."
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone raised their weapons.
Shadow growled louder.
The lock clicked.
Once.
Twice.
Then the door opened slightly.
A hand appeared around the edge.
Holding the envelope.
The man's voice came from the darkness.
"Alessandro."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from the phone.
Not from the recordings.
From my childhood.
The door opened wider.
And Victor Morelli stepped inside.
Alive.
May you like
Smiling.
Holding the letter I was never supposed to read.
