Chapter 4 - The Father I Was Told Was Dead

The front door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

My mother grabbed my hand.

"Sarah, listen to me."

I looked at her.

For the first time in my life, my mother didn't look like my mother.

She looked like someone running out of places to hide.

"Who is outside?"

She didn't answer.

"Mom."

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

"Take the baby."

My heart raced.

"Why?"

"Because I need you to trust me."

Those words hurt.

Because trust was the one thing I had run out of.

My husband destroyed it.

Then my mother shattered what was left.

I picked up my daughter from the bassinet beside the couch.

She was sleeping peacefully.

Completely unaware that the world around her had become a battlefield.

I held her close.

Then the door opened.

Not forced.

Not broken.

Opened with a key.

My blood ran cold.

Someone had a key to my house.

A tall man stepped inside.

He looked to be in his early 60s.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

A dark jacket.

But the thing that caught my attention wasn't his appearance.

It was the way my mother reacted.

She stepped backward.

Like she was seeing a ghost.

"Daniel."

The man's eyes moved to her.

Then to me.

Then to the baby in my arms.

And I knew.

This was him.

My father.

The man I buried in my mind decades ago.

The man I was told had died.

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt impossible.

Finally, he looked at me.

"Sarah."

Hearing him say my name felt strange.

Wrong.

Like a stranger pretending to know me.

I tightened my grip on my daughter.

"Who are you?"

His expression changed.

Pain crossed his face.

"I think you know."

"No."

My voice shook.

"I don't."

My mother stepped forward.

"Daniel, you shouldn't be here."

He looked at her.

"You should have told her years ago."

My heart dropped.

"Tell me what?"

Neither of them answered.

I looked between them.

"No."

My voice became louder.

"I'm done being the person everyone protects by lying to."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"You have every right to be angry."

"Angry?"

I laughed bitterly.

"My husband cheated on me. He pushed me while I was pregnant. I found out my mother knew things she never told me. And now the father I thought was dead walks through my door."

I shook my head.

"What exactly am I supposed to feel?"

Daniel didn't respond immediately.

Then he said:

"Afraid."

The word made me freeze.

"Why?"

"Because Ryan knows."

I stared at him.

"Knows what?"

"That I'm alive."

The room became silent.

My mother closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

"You told him?"

"No."

Daniel answered.

"He found out."

I looked back at him.

"How?"

Daniel walked slowly into the room.

Not threatening.

Careful.

Like he knew one wrong movement would make me run.

"Because Ryan wasn't just cheating on you."

My stomach tightened.

"I already know about Megan."

"No."

Daniel looked directly at me.

"You know about the affair."

He paused.

"You don't know about the plan."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What plan?"

Daniel glanced at my mother.

Then back at me.

"Ryan didn't want a divorce."

I frowned.

"That's exactly what he told me."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"He wanted something else."

My fingers tightened around my daughter's blanket.

"What?"

Daniel looked toward the folder Rachel had given me.

"The money transfers you found weren't just payments to Megan."

My breathing slowed.

"They were payments to someone else."

I remembered the documents.

The withdrawals.

The hidden accounts.

"The account belonged to Megan."

"Part of it."

My eyes widened.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, I noticed how tired he looked.

Like he had spent years carrying something heavy.

"Megan was never Ryan's escape."

I waited.

"She was his cover."

The words hit me.

"What?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Ryan needed everyone to believe he was leaving you because he fell in love with someone else."

My voice became quiet.

"Then why was he leaving?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

And that scared me more.

"Sarah, your marriage wasn't the reason Ryan entered your life."

I stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

My mother started crying.

"Daniel..."

He looked at her.

"She deserves the truth."

Then he looked back at me.

"Ryan married you because of your father's company."

I froze.

"What company?"

Daniel didn't blink.

"The one your mother thought was gone."

I looked at my mother.

She looked away.

Another secret.

Another thing hidden from me.

"I don't understand."

Daniel leaned forward.

"When I disappeared, I didn't die."

My throat tightened.

"You disappeared?"

He nodded.

"I was forced to disappear."

"By who?"

His expression darkened.

"By people who wanted control of everything I owned."

I looked at Ryan's face in my memory.

The calm expression.

The confidence.

The way he told me he had already made his decision.

"What does Ryan have to do with that?"

Daniel's answer came quietly.

"Ryan was working for them."

My entire body went still.

"No."

"He knew exactly who you were before you met him."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Sarah..."

"No."

I stepped back.

Because accepting it meant accepting something impossible.

That my entire marriage had been built on a lie.

Daniel continued.

"He didn't accidentally fall in love with you."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Stop."

"He targeted you."

I looked down at my daughter.

The room felt like it was spinning.

Every memory changed.

Our first date.

Our wedding.

The night he told me we were going to have a baby.

Were any of those moments real?

Or had I just been part of someone's plan?

"Why?"

My voice broke.

"Why would he do this?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because you were the last thing standing between him and everything he wanted."

I wiped my tears.

"What does he want?"

Daniel didn't answer.

My mother did.

"Control."

I looked at her.

"He wanted control over your inheritance."

I stared at her.

"What inheritance?"

She swallowed.

"Your father's company."

I couldn't speak.

Because I didn't have a company.

I didn't have an inheritance.

I had a normal life.

A normal job.

A normal house.

At least, that's what I believed.

Daniel looked at me.

"Ryan spent years making you believe you had nothing."

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

I picked it up.

One new message.

A photo.

My hands started shaking.

It was Ryan.

Standing outside my house.

Taken minutes ago.

Below the picture was a message.

"I know your father is there."

My blood turned cold.

Another message appeared.

"I know what he told you."

Then one final message.

"Ask him why he really disappeared."

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Because he knew something.

Something worse.

"What does he mean?" I whispered.

Daniel stood up slowly.

And then he said:

"Sarah..."

The front window shattered.

May you like

Everyone froze.

And on the floor beside the broken glass was a small envelope with my name written on it.
