Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden in My Husband’s Lies

The first thing I heard when I opened my eyes was a monitor beeping beside my bed.
The second thing I heard was my mother crying.
"Sarah..."
Her voice broke.
And before I even looked down, before I saw the hospital bracelet around my wrist, before I remembered the pain, I knew.
Something had changed.
I turned my head slowly.
My mother Susan was sitting beside me, holding my hand with both of hers.
Her eyes were red.
Her face looked older.
Like the last few hours had taken years from her.
"Where is my baby?" I whispered.
My mother immediately leaned closer.
"She's here."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"She's perfect."
I closed my eyes.
For a second, I couldn't breathe.
My daughter.
She was alive.
She was safe.
Everything else could wait.
The betrayal.
The lies.
Ryan.
Megan.
All of it could wait.
Because my baby girl was still here.
"How long was I asleep?" I asked.
My mother looked away.
"About nine hours."
Nine hours.
Nine hours since my husband pushed me onto the floor.
Nine hours since the man who promised to love me forever ran away instead of helping me.
Nine hours since my entire life changed.
"Where is Ryan?" I asked.
The silence answered before my mother did.
She squeezed my hand.
"Sarah..."
"Where is he?"
My mother took a deep breath.
"He hasn't come."
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
Some part of me had still hoped.
A small, foolish part of me believed Ryan would eventually realize what he had done.
That he would walk into the hospital.
That he would apologize.
That he would ask about his daughter.
But he didn't.
He chose to disappear.
Just like he had chosen another woman.
I looked toward the window.
The city outside was waking up.
People were driving to work.
Parents were dropping children off at school.
Normal lives were continuing.
But mine had been shattered in one night.
"Did he call?" I asked.
My mother hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach tighten.
"What?"
"Sarah..."
"Mom. What happened?"
She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
"He called me."
My heart stopped.
"What did he say?"
My mother looked uncomfortable.
"He wanted to know if you were going to press charges."
I stared at her.
Not if I was okay.
Not if our daughter was okay.
Not if I survived.
He wanted to know if I was going to press charges.
I laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
"Of course that's what he cared about."
My mother looked angry.
"I should have known something was wrong with him."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You couldn't have known."
But deep down, I wondered if I should have known.
All those late nights.
All those secret phone calls.
All those moments when Ryan turned his screen away from me.
The signs were there.
I just didn't want to believe them.
A nurse entered the room a few minutes later carrying my daughter.
My entire world stopped.
She was tiny.
So tiny.
Wrapped in a pink blanket.
Her little fingers moved as the nurse placed her carefully into my arms.
"She was born healthy considering everything," the nurse said.
"She was a fighter."
I looked down at my daughter.
A fighter.
That was exactly what she was.
I touched her tiny cheek.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
My voice cracked.
"I'm sorry you had to come into this world like this."
My mother moved closer.
"Don't say that."
"But it's true."
"No."
She looked at me firmly.
"She came into this world surrounded by someone who loves her."
I looked at my mother.
And I realized something.
Ryan had left.
But I wasn't alone.
Not anymore.
For the first time since opening that bedroom door, I felt something stronger than pain.
I felt determination.
Later that afternoon, after the doctors confirmed both my daughter and I were stable, my attorney arrived.
Her name was Rachel Adams.
I had contacted her two months earlier.
Back when I first noticed money disappearing from our accounts.
Back when I still hoped there was an innocent explanation.
Rachel walked into the room carrying a black folder.
She looked at me.
Then at my baby.
Then back at me.
"I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances."
I nodded.
"I just want the truth."
Rachel placed the folder on the table.
"I think you're about to get it."
My hands tightened around the blanket.
"What did you find?"
She opened the folder.
"The withdrawals from your joint account weren't random."
My heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
"Ryan wasn't just spending money."
She pulled out several printed documents.
"He was moving it."
I stared at the papers.
"Where?"
Rachel looked at me.
"To another account."
"His?"
She shook her head.
"No."
The room became quiet.
"Whose account?"
Rachel turned one page around.
And I saw a name.
Megan Carter.
My chest tightened.
"He was paying her?"
Rachel nodded.
"Not just paying her."
She pointed at the documents.
"Ryan transferred more than twenty thousand dollars over the last six months."
I looked down at my sleeping daughter.
Twenty thousand dollars.
While I was buying baby clothes.
While I was planning a nursery.
While I was believing my husband was working overtime for our future.
He was secretly funding another life.
"But why?"
Rachel opened another document.
"This is where it gets worse."
I looked up.
"What?"
"Ryan wasn't only hiding an affair."
She paused.
"He was preparing to leave financially."
My fingers went cold.
"He was planning this."
"Yes."
Rachel slid another paper toward me.
"He started separating assets months ago."
I stared at the signature.
Ryan's signature.
My husband.
The man who held my hand during our wedding vows.
The man who promised we would grow old together.
He had been preparing an escape plan.
And I had been preparing a nursery.
I felt something inside me break.
Not my heart.
Something else.
The last piece of trust I had left.
"Can he do this?" I asked.
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because he made several mistakes."
I looked at her.
"What mistakes?"
She leaned forward.
"Ryan underestimated you."
For the first time in days, I almost smiled.
Almost.
"What happens now?"
Rachel closed the folder.
"Now we protect you and your daughter."
I looked down at my baby.
My daughter slept peacefully.
She had no idea her father had already abandoned her.
She had no idea the man who created her had tried to destroy the person protecting her.
But I knew.
And I would never forget.
Two days later, I was discharged from the hospital.
My mother helped me return home.
But when I opened the front door, I immediately knew something was wrong.
The house looked different.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same photographs.
But Ryan's presence felt like a ghost.
I walked into the bedroom.
The room where everything happened.
The room where my marriage ended.
The room where I almost lost my daughter.
On the nightstand, I found my phone charger.
Beside it was something I hadn't noticed before.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
My heart started beating faster.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It wasn't Ryan's.
It wasn't mine.
I slowly opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words were written across it.
"Ryan was not alone."
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
And saw a photo of Ryan standing with someone I never expected to see.
Someone who had been in my life for years.
Someone who knew all my secrets.
May you like
And underneath the photo was one sentence:
"Ask your mother why she never told you about me."
