Chapter 6 - The Truth Hidden in Lily's Room

The folder was sitting inside my daughter's crib.

The same crib where I had imagined placing Lily for the first time.

The same crib where I had carefully arranged blankets, stuffed animals, and tiny clothes.

Now there was a folder inside it.

Waiting for me.

My hands felt numb as I reached for it.

My mother stood behind me.

“Emily, don't open that.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because my mother was never afraid of the truth.

Not once in my entire life.

But now she looked like she already knew what I was about to find.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a photograph.

Not a document.

Not a contract.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

And my heart stopped.

It was me.

Pregnant.

Walking into the Carter family office building.

Six months earlier.

I remembered that day.

I had gone there to surprise Mark with lunch.

He had told me he was having a difficult week.

He said he needed support.

I remembered standing outside his office with a bag of his favorite food.

I remembered smiling.

I remembered believing I was being a good wife.

But the photo showed something I never saw.

Mark was standing behind me.

Talking to his father.

And they weren't smiling.

They looked serious.

Like they were discussing something important.

Something about me.

I turned the page.

Another photo.

This time, it was a copy of an email.

The sender was Mark.

The receiver was Robert.

The subject line made my stomach twist.

"Emily's Approval."

I read the first sentence.

"She has no idea what she's signing."

My hands started shaking.

I kept reading.

The email wasn't about divorce.

It wasn't about Rebecca.

It was about money.

My money.

The house.

The savings account my parents left me.

The inheritance I had received years before meeting Mark.

Money that had always been separate.

Money Mark knew mattered to me.

The email continued.

"Once the baby arrives, everything becomes easier. She will trust the family more."

I stopped reading.

The baby.

Everything became easier after Lily arrived.

What did that mean?

I looked at my mother.

“Did you know?”

Her face changed.

A small movement.

But I saw it.

A hesitation.

“Mom.”

She sat down slowly.

“Emily…”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“Please don't do that.”

“Do what?”

“Protect me from the truth.”

She looked away.

And that was when I knew.

She knew something.

“How long?”

She didn't answer.

“How long have you known?”

My mother covered her mouth.

“I suspected.”

“Suspected what?”

“That Mark wasn't being honest.”

The room felt smaller.

“You knew?”

“I didn't know about Rebecca.”

“Then what did you know?”

She looked at the folder.

“About the money.”

I froze.

“What?”

My mother sighed.

“Your father warned me.”

I stared at her.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“My father died eight years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then how could he warn you?”

My mother looked toward the hallway.

And whispered:

“He didn't.”

The silence was immediate.

“What does that mean?”

She didn't answer.

I stood up.

“Mom.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your father didn't tell me before he died.”

I waited.

“He told me after.”

My entire body went cold.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“I know.”

“Mom, stop.”

I stepped backward.

“My father is dead.”

She looked at me.

And said the sentence that changed everything.

“Emily, your father might not be.”

The room stopped.

No sound.

No movement.

Nothing.

I stared at her.

“What?”

She looked terrified.

“I didn't want you involved.”

“Because?”

“Because your father disappeared for a reason.”

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn't process it.

“You're telling me my dead father might be alive?”

My mother looked down.

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

She reached for my hand.

“Emily, listen to me.”

I pulled away.

“No.”

I pointed at the folder.

“This is my life.”

I picked up the papers.

“My husband betrayed me.”

“My father might be alive.”

“His family has been hiding things from me.”

I looked at her.

“And you knew.”

Tears rolled down her face.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Protect.

The word felt poisonous now.

Mark said it.

Robert said it.

My mother said it.

Everyone was protecting me from the truth.

But nobody cared that the lies were destroying me.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice responded.

Not Claire.

Not Robert.

Someone else.

“Emily.”

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I hadn't heard it in years.

But I knew.

“Dad?”

Silence.

Then a quiet breath.

“Yes.”

My knees almost gave out.

My mother covered her mouth.

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I don't have much time.”

My voice shook.

“You're alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because I found out what Mark's family was planning.”

I looked at the folder.

The photographs.

The documents.

The fake signature.

“What were they planning?”

His voice became lower.

“To take everything from you.”

My heart raced.

“Why?”

“Because your inheritance was never just money.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“Emily, listen carefully.”

His voice sounded desperate.

“The money your mother and I left you was connected to something much bigger.”

I looked at the nursery.

The room suddenly felt unfamiliar.

“Dad, what is happening?”

“I tried to stop them.”

“Who?”

A pause.

Then he said:

“The Carter family.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The Carter family.

The same name behind every secret.

The same name behind every lie.

“Dad, why didn't you come to me?”

“Because they were watching you.”

I looked toward the window.

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

“Mark.”

The answer hurt.

Even though I already knew.

“He was never just cheating on you.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What do you mean?”

“He married you because of what you had.”

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“No, that's not possible.”

“Emily.”

My father's voice softened.

“I need you to believe me.”

I looked at Mark's documents.

The copied signature.

The hidden accounts.

The secret plans.

A part of me already believed him.

Then my father said something else.

Something that made my blood run cold.

“There is one person in that house who knows the entire truth.”

I looked around the nursery.

“Who?”

Silence.

Then:

“The person who helped Mark fake your signature.”

My breathing stopped.

“Who?”

My father didn't answer immediately.

And when he finally spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.

“Emily... look behind the crib.”

I turned slowly.

The crib.

The place where Lily would sleep.

My hands started shaking.

I walked toward it.

My mother whispered my name.

I reached behind the crib.

My fingers touched something.

A small envelope.

Hidden against the wall.

I pulled it out.

My name was written on the front.

But this time, the handwriting was familiar.

Because it wasn't Mark's.

It wasn't Robert's.

It was mine.

I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

One sentence.

One date.

May you like

One signature.

And beneath it was the name of the person who had betrayed me before Mark ever did.
