Chapter 5 - The Man Behind Mark’s Secret

The message stayed on my phone screen.
"Your father-in-law is here."
I stared at those words until they blurred.
My father-in-law.
Robert Carter.
Mark's father.
A man I had known for six years.
A man who had hugged me at my wedding.
A man who held my hand when we announced Lily's pregnancy.
A man who told me I was the daughter he never had.
I looked through the window again.
The black SUV was still there.
Still watching.
My mother stepped beside me.
“Emily.”
Her voice was quiet.
“Who is it?”
I didn't answer immediately.
Because saying his name made it real.
“Mark's father.”
My mother frowned.
“Why would he be here?”
I didn't know.
But deep down, I already felt the answer.
Because people didn't show up at midnight unless they had something to hide.
The phone rang again.
Claire.
I answered immediately.
“Why is Robert Carter outside my mother's house?”
There was silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Because he knows you found the documents.”
My heart sank.
“How?”
“Because those documents weren't supposed to exist anymore.”
I looked at the papers scattered across the table.
“What are you talking about?”
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Emily, you need to understand something. Mark didn't create that plan by himself.”
I looked toward the window.
The SUV remained still.
“Then who did?”
Another pause.
“His father.”
The room became silent.
I felt my mother's hand grab my arm.
“Emily, what is happening?”
I didn't know how to explain it.
Because the truth was becoming more terrifying with every piece I found.
My husband hadn't just betrayed me.
He had help.
I lowered my voice.
“Claire, tell me everything.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because if Robert knows I'm talking to you, I'm done.”
The fear in her voice was obvious.
Not fake.
Not dramatic.
Real fear.
“What does he have on you?”
She didn't answer.
“Claire.”
Finally, she whispered:
“He knows about the money.”
I looked down at the bank statements.
The payments.
The transfers.
The initials.
“Rebecca wasn't just Mark's girlfriend, was she?”
“No.”
My stomach tightened.
“What was she?”
Claire hesitated.
Then said:
“She was part of the plan.”
The words made my entire body go cold.
A plan.
Not an affair.
Not a mistake.
A plan.
I looked at my mother.
She saw my expression.
“What did she say?”
I didn't respond.
Because I didn't know how to say it.
The woman my husband brought into our bedroom wasn't just there to replace me.
She was there because someone wanted something from me.
My phone suddenly went dead.
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
No signal.
That was impossible.
My mother's house always had service.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And went out.
My mother grabbed my hand.
“Emily.”
I looked toward the front door.
The darkness felt different now.
Not peaceful.
Not empty.
Someone was outside.
I knew it.
A few seconds later, there was a knock.
Three slow knocks.
My mother whispered:
“Don't open that.”
I didn't move.
Another knock.
Stronger.
Then a voice.
“Emily.”
My blood froze.
I knew that voice.
Robert Carter.
“Open the door.”
My mother stepped in front of me.
“No.”
Robert's voice remained calm.
Almost polite.
“I'm not here to hurt anyone.”
I almost laughed.
Because that was exactly what someone dangerous would say.
My phone suddenly lit up.
A new message.
From Claire.
I opened it.
Three words.
"Do not trust him."
I looked at the door.
Robert knocked again.
“Emily, we need to talk about my son.”
My hands tightened.
“You mean your son who cheated on his pregnant wife?”
Silence.
Then Robert answered:
“You still don't understand what happened.”
The arrogance in his voice reminded me of Mark.
The same confidence.
The same belief that everyone else was just a piece on their board.
“You helped him.”
I heard nothing.
That silence was enough.
“You helped him leave me.”
Finally, Robert spoke.
“I helped him protect the family.”
I froze.
Protect.
That word.
The same word Mark used when he lied.
I looked at the papers.
The fake signature.
The hidden accounts.
The secret agreements.
“What family?”
Robert's voice became colder.
“The Carter family.”
I stepped closer to the door.
“My daughter is a Carter.”
A pause.
Then:
“That is exactly why we need to talk.”
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
No answer.
Only silence.
Then footsteps.
Moving away from the door.
I looked at my mother.
“He's leaving.”
But she didn't look relieved.
She looked terrified.
“Emily.”
“What?”
She pointed.
At the window.
The black SUV was still there.
But another vehicle had arrived.
A silver sedan.
Parked behind it.
Someone had been waiting.
Someone else.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo appeared.
My breath stopped.
It was a picture of Lily's nursery.
My nursery.
My house.
Taken from inside.
The message below it was short.
"He wasn't the only one with a key."
I dropped the phone.
Because suddenly I understood.
Someone had been inside my home.
Someone had been watching me.
Not after Mark left.
Before.
The next morning, I returned to the house with my mother.
I needed answers.
I needed to know what else had been hidden from me.
The front door was locked.
Nothing looked different.
But when I stepped inside, I felt it.
That strange feeling.
Like someone had already been there.
I walked upstairs.
The nursery door was closed.
I knew I left it open.
My hand reached for the handle.
Then I stopped.
Because something was written on the door.
A single word.
In black ink.
My name.
Emily.
My breathing became shallow.
May you like
I slowly opened the door.
And inside the nursery, sitting in Lily's crib, was a folder I had never seen before.
