Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Locked Office

The door handle moved.

Nobody in the room breathed.

I watched as the door slowly opened, revealing the person standing outside.

It was Daniel's father, Richard Cross.

And he was holding the original documents I thought had disappeared forever.

For a few seconds, I couldn't move.

Richard stood in the doorway, looking older than I remembered.

He had always been a quiet man.

Different from Eleanor.

Different from Olivia.

While Eleanor controlled every room she entered, Richard usually stayed in the background.

He was the type of person who listened more than he spoke.

That was why seeing him there terrified me.

Because I knew one thing.

He had heard everything.

Eleanor's confident expression disappeared.

"Richard?"

Her voice was no longer powerful.

It was uncertain.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved from Eleanor to the basin on the floor.

Then to me.

Then finally to Daniel.

"Is this what you've been doing when I'm not around?"

Daniel looked away.

That single movement told me more than words ever could.

My heart sank.

I had spent hours trying to convince myself Daniel was trapped.

That maybe he was manipulated.

That maybe he didn't understand what his family was doing.

But watching him avoid his father's eyes made me realize something painful.

He knew.

Richard walked into the living room slowly.

In his hand was a brown folder.

The same kind of folder I had seen inside Daniel's office.

The same folder containing the documents that nearly destroyed everything I had built.

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

"You don't understand what happened."

Richard looked at her.

"I understand perfectly."

The room went silent.

Olivia's face changed.

"What do you mean?"

Richard placed the folder on the table.

"I mean I know about the transfers."

Nobody spoke.

The silence became unbearable.

Eleanor's lips parted slightly.

"Richard..."

"No."

His voice was calm.

But firm.

"Don't explain this to me like I'm a child."

He opened the folder.

Inside were printed bank records.

Property documents.

Emails.

Everything.

My evidence.

Except there was something else.

Something I hadn't seen before.

Richard pulled out a document and placed it in front of me.

"I found this hidden in the old storage room."

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the page.

And my entire body froze.

It wasn't just a plan to remove my name from the house.

It was a plan to make it look like I had agreed.

My signature was there.

My initials.

Everything looked real.

Except one thing.

The date.

The date was from a day when I was out of the country visiting my sick mother.

I couldn't have signed anything.

"This is forgery," I whispered.

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

"Careful with your accusations."

I looked at her.

For the first time, I saw panic behind her eyes.

Not anger.

Panic.

Richard noticed too.

"Why are you afraid if there is nothing to hide?"

Eleanor's face hardened.

"You are choosing her over your own family?"

Richard looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

"Family doesn't mean protecting people when they are wrong."

Daniel finally spoke.

"Father, you don't know the whole story."

Richard turned toward him.

"Then tell me."

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when I realized something.

Daniel wasn't defending them.

He was afraid of them.

And maybe he had been afraid for years.

I looked at him.

"How long?"

He didn't answer.

"How long did you know?"

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Claire..."

"No."

My voice was quieter than I expected.

"Don't say my name like that. Just answer."

Everyone watched him.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

"Six months."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Six months.

Six months of lies.

Six months of pretending everything was normal.

Six months of sleeping beside me while his family planned to take away my home.

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes pain became too heavy to cry.

"Six months."

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I was trying to fix it."

"Fix it?"

I looked at him.

"By doing what?"

He stayed silent.

That was the answer.

Eleanor suddenly grabbed the folder from the table.

"This conversation is over."

Richard immediately stopped her.

"No, Eleanor."

She looked at him.

"You don't get to control this anymore."

The woman who had ordered me to kneel twenty minutes earlier suddenly looked smaller.

But I knew better.

People like Eleanor didn't give up easily.

They changed strategies.

They looked for another way to win.

She turned toward me.

"Claire, you have no idea what you're destroying."

I stared at her.

"I know exactly what I'm destroying."

I picked up my phone.

"I am destroying the lie."

I opened the file the attorney had sent me.

Then I connected it to the television screen.

The entire room watched as the documents appeared.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Private conversations.

One message from Eleanor to Olivia stood out.

I read it aloud.

"Once Claire is removed from the property, Daniel will finally understand who his real family is."

Daniel looked at his mother.

His expression changed completely.

"Mom?"

Eleanor said nothing.

Another message appeared.

This one was worse.

A conversation between Eleanor and someone saved under the name "Attorney."

The message said:

"Make sure the divorce papers are ready before she discovers anything."

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

"Divorce papers?"

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know.

That was the part that hurt the most.

They had been planning a future without me.

While I was still building one with Daniel.

Olivia suddenly stepped forward.

"Mom, tell them the truth."

Everyone looked at her.

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"Be careful."

Olivia swallowed.

For the first time, she looked afraid of her own mother.

"I didn't know it would go this far."

Richard looked at her.

"What did you do?"

Olivia looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

"I was the one who gave them access to your account information."

Daniel stepped back.

"What?"

Olivia covered her mouth.

"I thought they were only trying to pressure Claire into leaving. I didn't know they were going to fake documents."

Eleanor turned toward her daughter.

"You ungrateful little..."

She stopped herself.

Because she realized everyone had seen her reaction.

Everyone had heard enough.

I stood there watching the family that had tried to break me begin to break apart themselves.

But there was still one question.

One thing didn't make sense.

I looked at Richard.

"Why did you have the original documents?"

His expression changed.

A shadow crossed his face.

"I didn't find them."

The room went quiet again.

"What do you mean?"

Richard looked toward the staircase.

"I received them."

"From who?"

He hesitated.

Then slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

The handwriting looked familiar.

Too familiar.

My fingers went cold.

Because I knew that handwriting.

I had seen it before.

On the old letters Daniel kept hidden.

Richard placed the envelope on the table.

"Claire, someone wanted you to have this before they disappeared."

I stared at the envelope.

"Who?"

Richard looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

"The person who sent this was someone your husband told me was dead."

I reached for the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it, the lights suddenly went out.

And in the darkness, my phone received a message from an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence appeared on the screen.

"Don't open that envelope until you know who is standing behind you..."
