Chapter 3 - The Stranger Inside My House

I froze at the doorway.
My fingers were still wrapped around the handle.
Emily stood behind me, holding her breath.
Neither of us moved.
The whisper came again.
"Please..."
This time, I recognized the voice.
It wasn't David.
It wasn't Victoria.
It was a woman.
A scared woman.
I slowly stepped inside.
The lights were off.
The house that had always felt safe suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every shadow looked different.
Every sound felt like a warning.
"Who is there?" I called.
No answer.
Emily grabbed my arm.
"Mom, don't."
I looked back at her.
She was terrified.
Not the kind of fear that came from being surprised.
The kind of fear that came from knowing something was wrong.
I reached for the light switch.
The room brightened.
And then I saw her.
A woman was sitting on my living room floor.
Her hands were shaking.
Her face was pale.
And beside her was a small black bag.
"Claire?"
Emily whispered the name before I could say anything.
The woman looked up.
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
"I didn't know where else to go."
I stared at her.
This was the assistant.
The woman whose messages had appeared on Emily's phone.
The woman connected to David's secrets.
I stepped forward carefully.
"Why are you in my house?"
Claire looked at Emily.
Then at me.
"Because David knows I found out."
The room became silent.
I didn't like the way she said it.
Not because she sounded afraid.
Because she sounded certain.
"What did you find out?" I asked.
Claire reached into her bag.
For a moment, I thought she might pull out something dangerous.
Instead, she pulled out a folder.
Old documents.
Printed messages.
Photos.
She placed them on the table.
"I worked for David for three years."
Emily stayed near the door.
She didn't trust Claire.
Honestly, neither did I.
"You expect us to believe you just walked into my house because you suddenly decided to help?"
Claire lowered her eyes.
"No."
Her answer surprised me.
"No, I don't expect you to trust me."
She looked at Emily.
"I wouldn't trust me either."
That honesty made me pause.
Claire opened the folder.
"The first year I worked for him, I thought he was a great man."
She gave a bitter smile.
"He was professional. Calm. Intelligent."
She looked at the documents.
"Then I started noticing things."
I picked up the first paper.
It was a copy of an email.
A conversation between David and someone I didn't recognize.
The subject line made my stomach tighten.
Marriage Strategy.
I read the first few lines.
It wasn't romantic.
It wasn't personal.
It was about control.
About appearances.
About making Emily dependent on him.
I looked at Claire.
"What is this?"
"David doesn't just hurt people emotionally."
Her voice dropped.
"He plans it."
Emily moved closer.
"What do you mean?"
Claire looked at her.
"Before he married you, he studied you."
Emily stopped.
The color disappeared from her face.
"Studied me?"
Claire nodded.
"Your habits. Your fears. Your family."
I felt my hands tighten.
"Why?"
Claire hesitated.
Then she said something I never forgot.
"Because David doesn't choose people he loves."
She looked at Emily.
"He chooses people he can control."
The words landed like a punch.
Emily sat down.
I could see memories moving through her mind.
Every argument.
Every apology.
Every time she thought she was the problem.
Suddenly, they looked different.
Claire continued.
"At first, I thought it was just his personality."
She looked ashamed.
"I told myself he was demanding because he was successful."
She swallowed.
"But then I saw what happened when people resisted him."
"What happened?" I asked.
Claire looked at me.
"He destroyed them."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?"
Claire didn't answer immediately.
She opened another document.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Complaints.
People who had worked with David.
People who had disappeared from his company.
People who had suddenly quit.
I recognized one name.
A woman who used to be David's business partner.
"She left because of him?"
Claire nodded.
"She tried to expose him."
"What happened?"
Claire looked at the floor.
"David made everyone believe she was unstable."
I felt sick.
Because I had seen that before.
Not with his business partner.
With my daughter.
The same pattern.
The same weapon.
Make someone suffer.
Then convince everyone they deserved it.
Emily picked up another paper.
Her hands started shaking.
"Mom..."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She turned the page toward me.
It was a photograph.
Of our family.
A picture taken during Emily's wedding.
But someone had written something on the back.
A sentence.
"The mother will be the hardest obstacle."
My heart stopped.
He had been thinking about me from the beginning.
Claire spoke quietly.
"He knew you would protect her."
I looked at her.
"Then why attack her tonight?"
Claire's face changed.
Like she was afraid of the answer.
"Because he knows something happened."
"What?"
Claire looked at Emily.
"Someone gave him a warning."
Emily frowned.
"About what?"
Claire reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a small envelope.
"I found this in David's office yesterday."
She placed it on the table.
My name was written on the front.
Not Emily's.
Mine.
I stared at it.
Nobody spoke.
"Why would he have a letter with my name?"
Claire looked terrified.
"Because it wasn't written to you."
I looked up.
"What?"
Claire whispered:
"It was written about you."
Emily stepped back.
The room felt smaller.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few lines.
But the first sentence made my heart stop.
"If Emily ever finds out the truth, her mother will be the first person she runs to."
I couldn't breathe.
I kept reading.
David had been watching.
Planning.
Preparing.
And then I reached the final line.
"When the mother steps in, activate the second plan."
I looked at Claire.
"What second plan?"
Claire didn't answer.
Her phone suddenly started ringing.
She looked at the screen.
And her face turned completely white.
"Who is it?" Emily asked.
Claire slowly showed us the phone.
One name appeared.
David.
The call stopped.
Then another notification appeared.
A message.
Claire opened it.
Her hands began shaking.
She whispered the words aloud.
"Check the basement."
I stared at her.
"My basement?"
May you like
Claire nodded.
And before any of us could move, the basement door downstairs slowly opened by itself.
