Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

"Sarah."
The voice echoed through the hallway.
My daughter froze.
Lucas stopped crying.
Even Kevin looked like he had seen a ghost.
Because the woman standing at the top of the stairs wasn't supposed to exist.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My mind searched for an explanation.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
But then Sarah whispered the one thing that made my blood run cold.
"Mom..."
She looked at me.
"That's her."
I stared at my daughter.
"Who?"
Sarah's lips trembled.
"The woman from the hospital."
The woman slowly walked down the stairs.
One step.
Then another.
She wasn't rushing.
She wasn't afraid.
She looked like someone returning to a place she had never truly left.
When she reached the bottom, her eyes moved directly to Sarah.
Then to Lucas.
Then to me.
"I'm sorry you had to find out this way."
My voice finally came back.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at Kevin.
And Kevin looked away.
That was the answer.
Not a confession.
Not an explanation.
But enough.
"You know her."
I said it quietly.
Kevin didn't respond.
My heart sank.
"You know her."
This time, louder.
Kevin finally looked at me.
"Emma..."
"No."
I stepped back.
"Don't say my name like that."
The woman watched us silently.
Then she spoke.
"My name is Claire."
The room went silent.
I looked at Sarah.
She was crying.
"Claire..."
I repeated the name.
Because somewhere in my memory, it felt familiar.
But I couldn't place it.
"Why is my daughter afraid of you?"
Claire looked hurt.
"I never wanted her to be afraid."
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"That's not what happened."
Claire looked at her.
"I tried to protect you."
"No."
Sarah shook her head.
"You disappeared."
The words hit the room.
Claire lowered her eyes.
And for the first time, she looked less like a threat.
She looked like someone carrying years of regret.
"I thought leaving was the only way."
"Leaving?"
Sarah's voice cracked.
"You left me with him."
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Kevin.
"With him?"
My voice became smaller.
"What does that mean?"
Kevin closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
"I need to explain."
I stared at him.
"You've had twelve years."
"I know."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don't understand."
I pointed around the room.
"Everyone here knows something except me."
My voice broke.
"My daughter knew."
"Rachel knew."
"Claire knew."
"Even you knew."
I looked directly at Kevin.
"I was the only person living inside my own marriage who didn't know the truth."
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Claire walked closer.
"Emma, there are things you need to know about Sarah."
I looked at her.
"Then tell me."
She hesitated.
And that hesitation scared me.
"Sarah wasn't abandoned because Kevin hated her."
I frowned.
"Then why?"
Claire looked at Kevin.
"Because he was trying to keep her alive."
I stared at him.
"What?"
Sarah looked furious.
"Don't make him sound like a hero."
Claire turned toward her.
"I'm not."
"Then tell her the truth."
Claire nodded.
"He made mistakes."
Kevin looked down.
"But he wasn't the person who started this."
I felt confused.
"What started what?"
Claire walked toward the table.
She picked up the old notebook.
"The reason Sarah had to disappear."
She opened it.
Inside were pages filled with names.
Dates.
Addresses.
Phone numbers.
A list.
I looked closer.
Then I saw something.
My name.
Again.
But this time, beside it was another word.
"Target."
My hands became cold.
"What is this?"
Claire looked at me.
"This is the reason Kevin never told you anything."
I turned toward him.
"Target?"
Kevin looked devastated.
"Emma..."
"Was I in danger?"
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
My eyes filled with tears.
"You let me believe you were just cruel."
Kevin swallowed.
"I thought if you hated me, you would stay away."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You made yourself the villain?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
His voice became quiet.
"Because villains are easier to avoid than enemies you can't see."
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Sarah.
"Did you know?"
She shook her head.
"Not everything."
She looked at Kevin.
"I thought he hated me."
Kevin looked at her.
"I never hated you."
For the first time, his voice broke.
"I was angry."
Sarah looked away.
"At me?"
Kevin shook his head.
"At myself."
The room became painfully quiet.
Then Lucas started crying again.
Sarah immediately held him closer.
Claire watched the baby.
Her expression changed.
"Does anyone else know about him?"
The question was strange.
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
Claire looked worried.
"The baby."
Sarah tightened her grip.
"Why?"
Claire didn't answer.
Kevin did.
"Because Lucas is connected to this."
My heart dropped.
"What does that mean?"
Kevin looked at Sarah.
"Tell her."
Sarah looked terrified.
"Mom..."
"What?"
She swallowed.
"The night I gave birth..."
She stopped.
Then looked at Kevin.
"He came to the hospital."
I remembered the photo.
Kevin outside the hospital.
"You said he was looking for you."
Sarah nodded.
"But that's not all."
"What else?"
She looked at Lucas.
"He wasn't looking for me."
A terrible silence followed.
"He was looking for the baby."
I felt dizzy.
"Why?"
Sarah shook her head.
"I don't know."
Claire stepped forward.
"Because someone believes Lucas can expose what happened twelve years ago."
I stared at her.
"What happened twelve years ago?"
Claire looked at Kevin.
Then at me.
And finally said:
"The truth about who Sarah's real father is."
The room stopped.
Sarah looked shocked.
I couldn't understand the words.
"What?"
Kevin immediately stepped forward.
"Emma, listen."
"No."
I backed away.
"No."
My eyes moved between him and Sarah.
"Are you telling me..."
I couldn't finish.
Claire did.
"Kevin is not Sarah's biological father."
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Sarah looked at Kevin.
"Is that true?"
Kevin didn't answer.
That was the worst answer.
My knees weakened.
All those years.
All those arguments.
All those moments.
Everything suddenly felt different.
I looked at Kevin.
"Who is?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire reached into her jacket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Sealed.
She placed it on the table.
"This was hidden the day Sarah was born."
I stared at it.
"Who wrote it?"
Claire looked at me.
"Your husband."
Kevin's face changed.
"Claire."
But she continued.
"Because he knew one day Emma would need to see it."
My hands trembled as I picked up the envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Emma Miller.
Just Emma.
Like whoever wrote it knew me before Kevin did.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence.
My eyes moved across the words.
And everything inside me stopped.
Because the letter began with:
"Emma, if you are reading this, it means Sarah has finally found out that the man who raised her was never the only person who knew the truth..."
I looked up.
Kevin was gone.
May you like
The front door was open.
And outside, someone was standing in the dark holding another photograph of Sarah.
