Chapter 2 - The Secret Inside The Envelope

I stared at the message on my phone.

"Ask him about the baby."

Four words.

Four words that made my entire body feel cold.

I looked at Sarah.

She was still standing outside the door, holding the newborn against her chest.

Her eyes never left my face.

She already knew.

She knew that message had arrived.

"Who sent that?" I whispered.

Sarah shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Sarah, what does that mean?"

She looked down at the baby.

Then back at me.

"It means Kevin knows more than he told you."

My fingers tightened around my phone.

"No."

The word came out immediately.

Not because I believed him.

Because I wanted to.

For twelve years, Kevin had been my husband.

The man I built a life with.

The man I trusted.

The man who sat beside me during family dinners.

The man who held my hand when my father died.

The man who promised me we would always protect our family.

But now my daughter was standing in front of me after disappearing for a year.

And she was afraid of him.

"Come inside," I whispered.

Sarah hesitated.

For a moment, she looked like she might run.

Like she had spent the entire year learning not to trust anyone.

Then she stepped through the doorway.

I closed it quickly.

Not because I was afraid of the outside.

Because I suddenly felt like my own house was no longer safe.

Sarah walked into the living room.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She looked around like she was seeing a place from a nightmare.

"You haven't changed anything."

I swallowed.

"I couldn't."

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

Toward her old bedroom.

"You kept it?"

"Of course I kept it."

Sarah looked away.

For the first time, I saw tears forming in her eyes.

"I thought you hated me."

My heart broke.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"I thought you believed him."

I stepped closer.

"Sarah, I called you every day."

Her face changed.

Pain replaced fear.

"I know."

I froze.

"You know?"

She nodded.

"I saw the calls."

"Then why didn't you answer?"

She looked at the baby.

Because the answer was heavier than I expected.

"Because Kevin told me you didn't want me back."

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

"What did you say?"

"He told me you were angry. He said you were tired of defending me. He said you finally understood that I was destroying our family."

My hands started shaking.

"That is a lie."

"I know that now."

"Sarah, I would never say that."

"I know."

Her voice cracked.

"But I didn't know then."

I sat down.

My legs couldn't hold me anymore.

A year.

A full year.

My daughter thought I abandoned her.

And my husband had let her believe it.

"Where did you go?"

Sarah became quiet.

For a moment, I thought she wouldn't answer.

Then she whispered:

"I slept in places I don't want to remember."

My eyes filled.

"I worked wherever someone would hire me."

She looked at the baby.

"I found out I was pregnant three months after I left."

I covered my mouth.

"Sarah..."

"I was scared."

Her voice became smaller.

"I was eighteen. I had no money. No home. No one."

"You had me."

She looked at me.

"But I thought I didn't."

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because I knew who caused it.

Kevin.

I stood up.

"Why did you come back now?"

Sarah looked toward the front door.

"Because I found something."

"What?"

She reached inside her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

It looked old.

Damaged.

Like it had been hidden for a long time.

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

And my breath stopped.

It was a copy of a hospital record.

The name at the top was Sarah's.

The date was one year ago.

The same week she disappeared.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then I saw a name.

Kevin Miller.

My husband.

"What is this?"

Sarah looked terrified.

"That's what I was trying to find out."

I looked at her.

"Sarah, why was Kevin's name on your hospital record?"

She shook her head.

"Because he was there."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

"The night I gave birth."

The room went completely still.

"You gave birth?"

She nodded.

"Three days ago."

I looked at the baby.

Then back at her.

"But Kevin was here."

"I know."

"No."

I stepped back.

"That doesn't make sense."

Sarah's eyes filled with anger.

"Exactly."

She took the paper from my hand.

"That's why I came back."

I stared at her.

"Sarah, tell me everything."

She sat down.

The baby moved slightly in her arms.

And then she began.

"After I left, I stayed with a woman named Rachel."

"Who is Rachel?"

"Someone who helped girls like me."

I listened carefully.

"She knew Kevin."

My heart sank.

"How?"

Sarah looked at the floor.

"Because she told me I wasn't the first person he had done this to."

The words hit me.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into her bag.

She pulled out another item.

A photograph.

She placed it on the table.

I picked it up.

It showed Kevin.

Standing outside a hospital.

Holding a baby carrier.

My hands went numb.

"When was this taken?"

Sarah looked at me.

"Three days ago."

I stared at the picture.

"Why would Kevin be at the hospital?"

Sarah's voice was barely audible.

"Because he was looking for us."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"Looking for you?"

She nodded.

"He found out I had the baby."

"How?"

"I don't know."

The baby started crying softly.

Sarah immediately held him closer.

Her entire expression changed.

For a second, she wasn't the scared girl standing in my doorway.

She was a mother protecting her child.

I understood that feeling.

Because I had spent a year trying to protect her.

Now she was doing the same.

"What is the baby's name?" I asked.

Sarah looked down.

"Lucas."

I smiled sadly.

"He's beautiful."

She smiled for the first time.

A tiny smile.

But it disappeared quickly.

"Mom."

I looked up.

"There is something else."

I waited.

"Kevin didn't just make me leave."

My heart sank.

"What do you mean?"

"He planned it."

The room became silent again.

"Sarah..."

"He packed my things before I even knew."

I stared at her.

"He had a bag ready."

"What?"

"He knew exactly where I would go."

I couldn't breathe.

"How?"

Sarah looked at me.

"Because he had been watching me."

I remembered every argument.

Every time Kevin asked where Sarah was.

Every time he knew things he shouldn't know.

I had always thought he was just strict.

I had never considered something darker.

"Why would he do that?"

Sarah reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

The same handwriting from the envelope on the table.

"This was meant for you."

I took it.

My hands were trembling.

"Who gave you this?"

Sarah looked toward the hallway.

"Someone who worked with Kevin."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Someone who said your husband has been hiding the truth about our family for years."

I looked at the envelope.

There was a small mark in the corner.

A symbol.

One I recognized.

Because I had seen it before.

On Kevin's old documents.

On papers he never let me touch.

"Mom."

I looked up.

Sarah was crying.

"Before you open that..."

She stopped.

"What?"

Her voice dropped.

"Promise me you won't tell Kevin I came here."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

Because I already knew the answer scared me.

Sarah looked toward the locked front door.

"Because if he knows I'm back..."

A shadow moved across the glass window.

Sarah froze.

My heart stopped.

Someone was standing outside.

Watching us.

Sarah whispered one name.

"Kevin."

May you like

I turned toward the door.

The handle moved slowly.
