Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Returned From The Dead

The woman standing at my front door was holding the same photograph I had found in the basement.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Ethan.

Not the woman.

The entire house felt frozen between one truth and another.

Then she looked directly at Ethan.

"Hello, Ethan."

His face lost all color.

I had seen people face danger before.

I had seen soldiers walk into situations where they knew they might not come back.

But I had never seen Ethan look like this.

Like he was standing in front of a ghost.

"Sarah..."

The name came out as a whisper.

The woman smiled sadly.

"So you remember me."

My eyes moved between them.

The photograph.

The messages.

The secrets.

Everything was finally standing in front of me.

Ethan stepped backward.

"No."

Sarah tilted her head.

"That's the same thing you said the last time you saw me."

My body became still.

The last time.

Not years ago.

Not a memory.

A moment.

A meeting.

A secret.

I looked at Ethan.

"You told me she was dead."

His silence answered before his words did.

"Nicole..."

I raised my hand.

Not because I wanted him to stop speaking.

Because I needed one second to control my emotions.

The hardest part about being betrayed wasn't the lie.

It was realizing how many moments had been built around that lie.

Every conversation.

Every promise.

Every smile.

I wondered how much of my marriage belonged to me.

And how much of it belonged to a plan I never knew existed.

Sarah stepped inside.

She looked tired.

Not dangerous.

Not threatening.

Just exhausted.

"I know what you're thinking."

I looked at her.

"Do you?"

She nodded.

"You're wondering if I was part of this."

I didn't answer.

Because I was.

Because after everything I had discovered, trusting anyone felt like a mistake.

Sarah looked at Ethan.

"He never told you."

"No."

She laughed quietly.

Not happily.

More like someone who had already expected disappointment.

"Of course he didn't."

Ethan finally found his voice.

"Sarah, you shouldn't be here."

Her expression changed.

"That's exactly what you said before you left me."

The room became silent.

I looked at Ethan.

"Left her?"

He closed his eyes.

"Nicole..."

"No."

My voice remained calm.

But inside, every alarm was active.

"Tell me the truth."

He looked at Sarah.

Then at me.

And for a moment, I saw the person underneath everything.

Not the confident husband.

Not the son of Richard Carter.

Just a man trapped by choices he made.

"I thought she was dead."

Sarah looked away.

"That's what he told himself."

I turned toward her.

"What happened?"

Sarah placed the photograph on the table.

Then she took a deep breath.

"Three years ago, Ethan found out something about his father."

Richard.

Again.

Everything returned to him.

Sarah continued.

"Richard wasn't just controlling his family. He was involved with something much bigger."

I crossed my arms.

"The classified project."

Sarah looked surprised.

"You know about that?"

"I found the files."

She nodded slowly.

"Then you know why they wanted you."

I stared at her.

"Explain."

Sarah looked at Ethan.

"Your husband wasn't supposed to marry you because he loved you."

Ethan immediately reacted.

"That's not true."

Sarah looked at him.

"Isn't it?"

The question stayed in the air.

I watched Ethan carefully.

Because I needed to know.

Not from Sarah.

Not from Richard.

From him.

"Ethan."

He didn't look at me.

That hurt more than anything.

"Tell me why you chose me."

Finally, he looked up.

His eyes were filled with regret.

"I met you before I knew who you were."

"That's not what I asked."

He looked down.

And that was enough.

Sarah continued.

"Richard discovered Nicole's identity before the wedding."

My expression changed.

"How?"

"Because someone inside the intelligence system sold information."

I felt my stomach tighten.

A betrayal from inside.

The worst kind.

Sarah looked at me.

"Richard believed you had access to a file called Project Helix."

The name immediately triggered memories.

A file.

A mission.

A disappearance.

People who vanished after trying to expose the truth.

"You know about Helix."

Sarah nodded.

"Because I was involved."

I studied her.

"Who were you?"

She hesitated.

Then answered:

"I was the person assigned to investigate Richard Carter."

That changed everything.

She wasn't just Ethan's former wife.

She was connected to the same secret.

"The marriage."

I looked at Ethan.

"Was it arranged?"

His face tightened.

"No."

Sarah interrupted.

"Not exactly."

I looked at her.

"Not exactly?"

She sighed.

"Richard didn't order Ethan to marry you."

She paused.

"But he encouraged him to get close to you."

The room became painfully quiet.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because I loved Ethan.

Because I had trusted my own judgment.

I had believed I could read anyone.

I had believed I could see deception.

But I missed this.

I missed the person standing closest to me.

Ethan stepped toward me.

"Nicole, listen."

I moved back.

"No."

He stopped.

"I need to understand something."

My voice was quiet.

"When you looked at me every day, when you told me you loved me..."

I looked directly at him.

"How much of it was real?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt more than any confession.

Sarah looked away.

She understood.

Maybe because she had asked herself the same question.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

From Richard.

Only five words.

"Bring Sarah to the basement."

My eyes narrowed.

Sarah noticed.

"What did he say?"

I showed her.

Her expression changed instantly.

"No."

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"We cannot go down there."

"Why?"

Her face became serious.

"Because that's where Richard keeps the truth."

I looked toward the basement.

The same place where I found my file.

The same place where my identity was exposed.

The same place where someone had been watching me.

Ethan shook his head.

"Nicole, don't."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His voice became desperate.

"Because my father isn't trying to scare you."

"Then what is he trying to do?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Sarah did.

"He wants you to remember."

I frowned.

"Remember what?"

She looked at me.

"Something that happened before you became Nicole Carter."

My heart slowed.

Because I knew.

There were pieces of my past I had buried.

Things connected to Project Helix.

Things even I didn't fully understand.

The basement lights suddenly turned on.

Nobody touched the switch.

We all looked toward the hallway.

A sound came from downstairs.

A recording.

An old voice.

My voice.

I froze.

Because the speaker wasn't playing a message.

It was playing a conversation.

One I had never heard before.

The recording continued.

And then my own voice said:

"If Richard Carter finds out I survived, everyone connected to Helix is in danger."

Sarah looked at me.

Ethan looked terrified.

I walked slowly toward the basement stairs.

Because there was only one explanation.

Someone had recorded me before I lost my memory of that night.

I reached the bottom step.

Then the recording changed.

A man's voice spoke.

A voice I recognized immediately.

My father's.

May you like

And he said one sentence:

"Nicole, if you are hearing this, it means Richard already found the person who betrayed you."
