Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Behind My Husband’s Name

The basement door was standing open.

I stared at it from the dark hallway.

A door that had always been locked.

A door I had never been allowed to touch.

And now it was open.

Ethan stood beside me, frozen.

"Nicole..."

His voice was barely a whisper.

I looked at him.

"What is down there?"

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

People could hide words.

They could hide documents.

They could hide entire lives.

But they couldn't hide fear.

And Ethan was afraid.

I stepped closer to the basement entrance.

The light from my phone barely reached the bottom of the stairs.

Something about that darkness felt familiar.

Not because I had been there before.

Because I had seen places like it during missions.

Places where people kept things they never wanted discovered.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

I looked down at his hand.

Then back at his face.

"Why?"

He released me immediately.

"I don't know what my father has stored down there."

I studied him carefully.

"You know something."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

I waited.

Silence.

Then Ethan looked away.

That was when I knew.

He wasn't protecting me.

He was protecting himself.

I walked down the first step.

Then the second.

"Ethan, if you want me to trust you, start by telling me the truth."

He followed behind me.

"I wanted to."

I stopped.

"What does that mean?"

He looked at the floor.

"I wanted to tell you everything before we got married."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

His jaw tightened.

"Because my father told me not to."

The words landed harder than I expected.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they confirmed my suspicion.

Richard Carter wasn't just controlling the family.

He was controlling my husband.

I continued walking.

The basement was colder than the rest of the house.

There were shelves along the walls.

Old boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

A place full of forgotten things.

Except I knew immediately.

None of this was forgotten.

Someone had organized everything.

Someone had been preparing.

I moved my phone light across the room.

Then I saw it.

A large file cabinet.

With a label.

"CARTRIDGE PROJECT."

My eyes narrowed.

That name meant nothing to an ordinary person.

But to me?

It meant everything.

I had seen similar names used before.

Projects that were never officially recorded.

Operations that existed only inside classified systems.

I walked toward it.

Ethan became nervous.

"Nicole, maybe we shouldn't open that."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

He didn't respond.

I opened the cabinet.

Inside were dozens of folders.

Names.

Dates.

Reports.

And then I saw something that made my fingers stop.

A folder with my name.

"NICOLE CARTER."

Not my birth name.

My married name.

Created after the wedding.

Someone had prepared this recently.

I opened it.

The first page contained a photograph.

Me walking into the Carter family home.

The day I moved in.

Below it was a report.

"Subject has maintained emotional control despite pressure tactics."

I turned the page.

Another note.

"Physical response training confirmed."

Another page.

"Military background suspected."

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Someone had been studying me.

Not because they wanted to know me.

Because they wanted to measure me.

I looked at Ethan.

"How long has your father known?"

Ethan looked helpless.

"I don't know."

"That's not true."

He swallowed.

"I knew he was suspicious."

"When?"

"Before the wedding."

I stared at him.

Before.

The word kept repeating in my mind.

Before the wedding.

Before I became Nicole Carter.

Before I trusted him.

"You knew."

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew enough."

His eyes became wet.

"I was scared."

That was the first honest thing he had said.

I believed him.

But belief was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

"What was my father planning to do?"

Ethan looked toward the stairs.

Then lowered his voice.

"He wanted proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That you weren't just a normal woman."

I almost laughed.

Normal.

That was always the word people used when they couldn't understand someone.

I turned back to the files.

Then I found something else.

A photograph.

Richard Carter standing with a man I recognized.

My entire body went still.

Because that man wasn't supposed to be alive.

I picked up the photograph.

Ethan noticed my expression.

"What?"

I didn't answer.

My mind was already moving.

The man in the picture was connected to an old intelligence case.

A case I had worked on.

A case that officially ended years ago.

But apparently, someone had continued it.

I flipped the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

One sentence.

"Nicole is the only one who knows where the file is."

My breathing slowed.

Because I understood now.

This wasn't about controlling a daughter-in-law.

This wasn't about household rules.

This was about information.

Information they believed I had.

Ethan stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

I didn't show him.

Not yet.

Because another thought entered my mind.

A dangerous one.

What if Ethan wasn't just hiding the truth?

What if Ethan was part of it?

I looked at him.

And he noticed.

The doubt.

The question.

"Nicole, I swear..."

I interrupted.

"How much of your marriage was real?"

His face changed.

That hurt him.

But I needed the answer.

"I loved you."

I watched him carefully.

"That wasn't my question."

He looked away.

And that silence answered enough.

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

I checked it.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"Do not trust the man standing beside you."

My eyes moved slowly from the screen to Ethan.

He saw the message.

And his face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Who sent that?"

I didn't answer.

Because I was watching him.

Not the message.

Not the phone.

Him.

A person trained in deception learns something important.

Fear is difficult to fake.

And Ethan looked genuinely terrified.

Then another message arrived.

This time, it included a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a security camera recording.

The date was from three days before my wedding.

The location was a private meeting room.

Richard Carter was sitting across from someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Then Richard spoke.

"Once she enters this family, we can access everything."

I stopped breathing.

The video continued.

The hidden person asked:

"And if she finds out?"

Richard smiled.

"She won't."

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Because one thing was now clear.

My marriage had started with a lie.

But the biggest question remained.

Who was the person sitting across from Richard?

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you know about this meeting?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was all the answer I needed.

I turned away.

Then my phone rang.

A call.

From a number I hadn't seen in years.

A number that belonged to someone who should never have been able to contact me again.

I answered.

But no one spoke.

Only silence.

Then a familiar voice finally whispered:

"Nicole..."

My entire body froze.

May you like

Because I knew that voice.

And the person speaking was someone who was supposed to be dead.
