Chapter 4 - Rachel's Last Secret

Daniel did not remember the drive back.

Only Cross's words.

She's with the person who killed your wife.

Grant insisted on coming despite his injuries.

When they reached the secure apartment, the guards were conscious.

Drugged.

Not attacked.

Lily was gone.

On her bed lay the stuffed giraffe Daniel had left in his truck.

He had never brought it upstairs.

Someone else had.

Attached to its neck was a note.

FOLLOW RACHEL.

Daniel stared at the handwriting.

It looked like Rachel's.

Grant examined it.

"Could she have written this before she died?"

Daniel turned the note over.

An address.

An old cabin Rachel's father had owned.

Daniel hadn't visited it in years.

They arrived after dark.

The cabin lights were on.

Daniel entered first.

"Lily?"

"Daddy!"

She ran from the hallway.

Daniel caught her.

She was unharmed.

Then Nathan Cross entered the room.

Daniel reached for him.

Cross didn't resist.

"Hit me later."

Daniel shoved him against the wall.

"You took my daughter."

"I saved her."

"From whom?"

"Vale."

Daniel stared into the face of the man whose funeral he had attended.

"Start talking."

Cross explained.

Eight months earlier, Vale discovered Cross was working with Rachel.

Cross staged his death after surviving an assassination attempt.

Rachel had not been so lucky.

Her car crash had been arranged.

Daniel's eyes burned.

"Proof."

Cross placed a recorder on the table.

Vale's voice filled the cabin.

A conversation.

Orders.

Rachel's name.

A payment.

Daniel listened until he could no longer pretend there was uncertainty.

Vale had ordered Rachel's death.

Sarah had unknowingly helped Vale locate documents afterward.

Cross had remained hidden because revealing himself would have exposed Lily.

"Why take Lily tonight?"

"Because Vale's people compromised your security detail."

"You could have called me."

"Vale monitors your communications."

Daniel looked at Grant.

Grant nodded reluctantly.

Cross continued.

"Rachel left one final safeguard."

"What?"

"Lily."

Daniel's face changed.

"Explain carefully."

"Rachel taught Lily something."

Cross crouched several feet from the child.

"Lily, do you remember the song your mommy taught you?"

Lily nodded.

She sang six simple lines.

Daniel had heard the song dozens of times.

A nonsense bedtime rhyme.

Cross wrote the first letter of each line.

Six characters.

A password.

The encrypted drive.

They entered it.

The files opened.

Everything was there.

Financial transfers.

Recordings.

Names.

Orders.

And a video made by Rachel forty-eight hours before her death.

Daniel watched his wife look directly into the camera.

"If Daniel sees this, tell him I'm sorry."

He covered his mouth.

"I knew he would try to protect me. That's why I couldn't tell him."

Rachel smiled sadly.

"But if Lily is safe, then I did one thing right."

Daniel's eyes filled.

Rachel continued.

"Daniel, don't turn this into revenge. Give our daughter the life we promised her."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at Lily.

She was playing quietly with the stuffed giraffe.

Rachel had known him perfectly.

His first instinct had been revenge.

Now he understood what victory actually meant.

Not killing Vale.

Exposing him.

Protecting Lily.

Ending the network.

They copied the evidence to multiple secure locations.

Grant contacted federal investigators outside Vale's influence.

Cross prepared to testify.

Sarah agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration on financial charges, though Daniel refused to interfere with the child-neglect investigation.

By dawn, arrest warrants were being prepared.

Then Daniel noticed one file Rachel had marked separately.

SARAH — INSURANCE.

He opened it.

Rachel had purchased a life insurance policy.

Beneficiary: Lily.

Secondary trustee: Sarah.

Daniel stared.

The policy had been changed eleven days before Rachel died.

Someone had forged Rachel's authorization.

If Daniel lost custody, Sarah would control nearly four million dollars held for Lily.

Sarah hadn't known about it.

But Vale had.

The guardianship wasn't only about evidence.

It was about money.

And Vale needed Sarah alive long enough to control it.

Daniel called the detention facility where Sarah was being held for questioning.

No answer.

Grant tried another number.

His face went white.

"What?"

"Sarah was released thirty minutes ago."

"By whose authority?"

Grant looked at him.

"General Vale."

Daniel stood.

Then his phone buzzed.

A live video arrived.

Sarah sat tied to a chair.

Vale stood behind her.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Bring me Rachel's drive."

Daniel's expression hardened.

Vale smiled.

"Or Lily loses her aunt too."

The screen went black.

Then another message appeared.

MIDNIGHT.

May you like

THE HOUSE.

COME ALONE.
