Chapter 6 - The Night They Came Back

For several seconds, Nicholas said nothing.

Emily did.

"No."

Claire placed the phone on the table.

"It's Mercer's claim."

"Martin was beaten."

"Yes."

"Kidnapped."

"Apparently."

"He nearly died."

"Apparently."

Emily stood.

"You're saying he did that to himself?"

Claire shook her head.

"I'm saying we don't know what we're looking at yet."

Nicholas appreciated the answer.

Evidence first.

Always.

Mercer was held at a secure state facility.

Claire interviewed him with federal prosecutors present.

Nicholas wasn't allowed inside.

Neither was Emily.

They waited.

Two hours later, Claire emerged.

"He says Martin has controlled the financial side for years."

Nicholas frowned.

"Insurance?"

"Insurance, shell companies, property transfers."

Emily looked sick.

"Why would he help us?"

"Mercer says Martin wanted Charles and Travis removed."

Nicholas understood.

"Using us."

Claire nodded.

According to Mercer, Judge Caldwell had indeed built the original corruption network.

But Caldwell suffered a severe stroke six years earlier and withdrew from everything.

Charles Rourke tried to take control.

Martin saw an opportunity.

He managed the paperwork.

He knew which companies held which assets.

He quietly moved money.

He fed evidence selectively.

Enough to threaten Charles.

Not enough to destroy himself.

Then Robert's hidden files resurfaced.

"How?" Emily asked.

"Mercer claims Martin discovered your father had kept duplicate records."

"Where?"

"He didn't know."

That explained the diner.

The purchase campaign.

The tunnels.

The panic.

But Nicholas still didn't accept the entire story.

"Why scratch the assault timestamp on the remote?"

Claire said, "Mercer thinks Martin wanted us to find Camera Four."

Nicholas looked at Emily.

The realization was ugly.

Martin hadn't been merely witnessing events.

He may have been directing their discovery.

The photographs.

The maps.

The story about Robert.

Maybe true.

Maybe curated.

Emily sat.

"He used my father."

Nicholas put a hand on her shoulder.

"We don't know how much yet."

Claire nodded.

"And Mercer is a corrupt sheriff trying to save himself. His testimony needs corroboration."

They got it faster than expected.

Ryan Collins identified Martin.

Not as his kidnapper.

As the man who visited the warehouse.

Ryan had heard Martin tell the guards:

"Do not hurt the boy more than necessary."

Maya began crying when Claire told her.

Martin had acted terrified while knowing exactly where Ryan was.

That night, investigators attempted to move Martin from the Virginia hospital into protective custody.

His room was empty.

The window locked.

No forced exit.

A nurse had signed him out for imaging.

The order was fake.

Martin disappeared.

Nicholas felt responsible.

Claire corrected him immediately.

"No."

"I trusted him."

"So did we."

"I let him near Emily."

"So did I."

Nicholas looked at her.

Claire's voice hardened.

"Then help me think instead of blaming yourself."

Fair.

He did.

What would Martin do?

The evidence network was collapsing.

Charles Rourke was under federal surveillance.

Travis had been arrested for assault, kidnapping conspiracy, and evidence tampering.

Mercer had surrendered.

The blue notebook existed.

Samuel Reed was alive.

Martin needed one thing.

Control of whatever evidence still connected him to the crimes.

Nicholas returned mentally to the diner.

Robert's documents had implicated Charles, Mercer, officials.

But Martin's name?

Almost absent.

Too absent.

An insurance broker involved for eleven years should appear somewhere.

Unless someone had removed the pages.

Nicholas called Emily.

"Your father's blue book. Are all the pages intact?"

She examined it.

At the back, several pages had been cut close to the binding.

Not torn recently.

Removed carefully.

Martin had known about the notebook.

Perhaps he had accessed it years earlier.

Nicholas asked, "What would your father do if he thought someone found one copy?"

Emily knew immediately.

"Make another."

They searched Robert's belongings again.

Nothing.

Then Emily remembered an old habit.

Her father duplicated keys inside condiment cans beneath the counter.

"Because thieves look for safes," he used to say. "Nobody steals mustard."

Nicholas went still.

The diner.

Beneath Booth Seven.

The floor compartment contained one pouch.

But perhaps Robert had used places people ignored.

The restaurant remained closed.

Nicholas and Claire returned with investigators.

They searched everything.

Salt containers.

Old recipe boxes.

Kitchen panels.

Nothing.

Then Emily opened the antique jukebox her father had refused to throw away.

Behind the record mechanism sat a blue envelope.

Inside:

Three pages cut from the notebook.

Martin Hale's name appeared repeatedly.

Payments.

Meetings.

A company number.

And one final sentence.

MARTIN THINKS HE'S SMARTER THAN CHARLES.

HE MIGHT BE.

DON'T TRUST HIM.

Emily closed her eyes.

Her father had warned her from nine years away.

Claire immediately ordered Martin's accounts frozen.

Investigators traced the company number.

A property appeared.

An abandoned motel sixteen miles outside town.

Owned through shell corporations.

State police moved.

Empty.

But the rooms contained files.

Computer servers.

Hidden cash.

Photographs.

Martin had built an archive of everyone.

Judges.

Deputies.

Business owners.

Rourkes.

He didn't simply participate in the network.

He insured himself against it.

Blackmail was his real policy.

At 11:48 that night, Emily's phone rang.

Martin.

Nicholas looked at her.

Claire began tracing immediately.

Emily answered.

"Martin."

His voice sounded tired.

"You found the pages."

"Yes."

"Robert always was careful."

"You had my brother's daughter threatened."

"Maya isn't your family."

"She works for me. That's close enough."

Martin sighed.

"I didn't want anyone hurt."

Emily looked at Nicholas.

He shook his head slowly.

Don't react.

Keep him talking.

"You kidnapped Ryan."

"Temporary leverage."

"You had Samuel shot."

Silence.

Then:

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

Emily's face hardened.

"You expect me to believe you?"

"I need you to believe something else."

"What?"

"Charles is going to kill you tonight."

Nicholas looked at Claire.

Trace still running.

Martin continued.

"He knows the case is over. He knows the money is frozen. He knows Travis will testify eventually."

Emily said, "Why warn me?"

"Because Charles blames me. And he thinks hurting you will bring me out."

"Will it?"

Martin laughed softly.

"Robert's daughter. Still asking the right question."

Nicholas leaned close enough for Emily to see his lips.

Where?

She understood.

"Where are you, Martin?"

"Close."

The call ended.

Trace failed.

But Martin's warning didn't.

Claire immediately relocated Emily to a secure hotel under state protection.

Nicholas stayed with her.

At 1:23 a.m., the fire alarm sounded.

Nicholas woke instantly.

No smoke.

No heat.

Hallway lights flashing.

He looked through the peephole.

Empty corridor.

His phone vibrated.

Daniel Price.

"Sir, don't open the door."

Nicholas called him.

Daniel was downstairs.

He had seen two men enter through a service stairwell wearing fire-department jackets.

No fire truck outside.

Claire's agents moved.

Emily stood behind Nicholas.

Calm now.

Fear was becoming something else.

Anger.

Footsteps approached.

Stopped outside.

Someone tested the handle.

Locked.

Then a voice.

Charles Rourke.

"Colonel Turner."

Nicholas stayed silent.

Charles spoke through the door.

"You should've taken your wife and left my town."

Nicholas looked at Emily.

Her eyes burned.

Charles continued.

"Open the door. Let's finish this like men."

Emily whispered, "He still thinks this is about men."

Nicholas almost smiled.

Outside, Claire's agents closed in from the stairwell.

Charles apparently heard them.

Footsteps ran.

A crash.

Shouting.

Nicholas waited until Claire herself knocked and identified a security code.

Then he opened.

One attacker was in custody.

The second had escaped.

Charles was not there.

Claire looked furious.

"He used a speaker."

Nicholas stared down the hall.

A remote audio device sat near the wall.

Distraction.

His phone rang.

Diner alarm.

Nicholas answered the automated security feed.

Camera One activated.

Someone had entered Turner's Corner Diner.

Emily looked over his shoulder.

A man stood behind the counter.

Martin Hale.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then held up a handwritten sign.

BRING EMILY.

May you like

COME ALONE.

Behind him, tied to a chair, sat Charles Rourke.
