The Colonel They Never Knew / Chapter 5 / 8

Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Was Erased

The door handle stopped moving.

I stood in my office, staring at the thin line of darkness beneath the door.

Someone was outside.

My training told me exactly what to do.

Do not rush.

Do not assume.

Do not reveal fear.

I reached toward the drawer where I kept my old service weapon, then stopped.

This was not a battlefield.

This was my home.

But after everything I had discovered, I no longer knew if home meant safety.

The handle moved again.

Slowly.

The door opened.

And standing there was someone I never expected to see.

Michael Whitmore.

Daniel's brother.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

He looked different from the man I had seen outside the courthouse.

The confident businessman was gone.

The person standing in front of me looked exhausted.

Afraid.

"How did you get in here?"

My voice was calm.

Michael raised both hands.

"I didn't come here to hurt you."

"That wasn't my question."

He swallowed.

"You left your back door unlocked."

I immediately turned.

The back door.

I never left it unlocked.

Never.

I looked back at him.

"You were here before."

Michael did not answer.

And again, silence told me more than words.

I stepped away from the desk.

"Why are you following me?"

"I'm trying to protect you."

I almost smiled.

Everyone said that when they wanted something.

Protect you.

Help you.

Keep you safe.

Those words had become excuses people used when they wanted control.

"People who protect me usually don't break into my house."

Michael looked down.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with."

"Then explain."

He looked toward the photograph on my desk.

The photograph of my father.

His expression changed.

"You found it."

I felt my entire body become still.

"You knew about it."

Michael looked away.

"Daniel showed it to me."

My anger rose.

Not loudly.

Not emotionally.

The kind of anger that becomes dangerous because it is controlled.

"My husband showed you proof that my father was alive, and you said nothing?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"I didn't know what to believe."

"You knew enough to hide it."

He didn't argue.

That was worse.

I walked closer.

"Start talking."

Michael sat down slowly.

For the first time, he looked less like an enemy.

He looked like someone carrying something heavy.

"Daniel discovered your father was connected to a classified military operation."

"Operation Silver Shield."

Michael looked at me.

"You know that name?"

"From Daniel's notebook."

He nodded.

"Then you know why he died."

I stared at him.

"Tell me."

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

"Your father was investigating his own unit."

The room became silent.

"My father?"

Michael nodded.

"He discovered someone inside the military was selling information."

I crossed my arms.

"And Daniel found this years later?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Michael looked at the floor.

"Because Daniel was helping someone."

"Who?"

He looked at me.

"You."

I didn't understand.

"What?"

"Daniel spent years trying to uncover what happened to your father because he believed you deserved the truth."

My chest tightened.

Daniel.

Even after death, he was still trying to protect me.

But there was something else.

Something Michael wasn't saying.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Michael looked at me.

"The night Daniel died, he was going to meet someone."

"Who?"

"Your brother."

The room went completely quiet.

I stared at him.

"I don't have a brother."

Michael's expression was painful.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

I walked back slowly.

Every memory from my childhood suddenly felt uncertain.

The family photos.

The stories.

The empty spaces where answers should have been.

"My parents had one child."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

His voice became softer.

"They had two."

I looked at him.

"Where is he?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation terrified me.

Because I already knew the answer would change everything.

"He was removed from every record."

"Why?"

"Because he saw something."

"What?"

Michael looked toward the window.

"Something he was never supposed to see."

I walked toward him.

"Michael."

He finally looked at me.

"Your brother witnessed the night your father disappeared."

The words hit me harder than I expected.

A child.

A witness.

A secret hidden for fifteen years.

"What was his name?"

Michael opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I picked it up.

Michael immediately stood.

"Don't answer."

I ignored him.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

"Evelyn."

I froze.

It was my father.

Again.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

"I can't stay long."

"Why did you leave me?"

The question came out before I could stop it.

For fifteen years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined anger.

I imagined tears.

I imagined thousands of questions.

But when I finally heard his voice, all I could ask was why.

His breathing changed.

"Evelyn, I never left you."

My eyes burned.

"Then why did everyone tell me you died?"

Silence.

Then:

"Because they were protecting the person who betrayed us."

I looked at Michael.

He was listening.

"Who?"

My father didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Your mother."

I felt like the ground disappeared.

"No."

"I know what you believe."

"My mother loved me."

"I know."

His voice softened.

"That's why this is harder."

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman whose funeral I attended.

The woman whose memories I had protected.

Could she really have known?

"Tell me the truth."

My father breathed heavily.

"Your mother didn't help them hide me."

I waited.

"She helped me disappear."

I looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer, I heard another sound.

A door opening.

Someone was with him.

My father lowered his voice.

"Evelyn, listen carefully."

I stepped closer to the phone.

"Who is there?"

No answer.

Then I heard a man's voice in the background.

A voice I had never heard before.

But the fear it caused in my father told me everything.

My father whispered:

"You have to leave now."

"Who is it?"

"Evelyn..."

His voice broke.

"Your brother found me."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Michael slowly sat back down.

"You heard him."

I turned toward him.

"You know where my brother is."

Michael didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"Who is he?"

Michael looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.

"His name is Lucas Carter."

The name felt unfamiliar.

But somehow...

It felt like a missing piece.

"Where has he been?"

Michael looked toward my locked office door.

"Closer than you think."

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

One photo.

I opened it.

My breath stopped.

It was a picture taken inside my house.

Inside my office.

Taken only seconds ago.

And standing behind my desk was a man I had never met.

But he was holding my father's old military insignia.

The message underneath contained only four words:

"Your brother is home."
