The Colonel They Never Knew / Chapter 4 / 8

Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Never Existed

The person outside my office door whispered my name.

"Evelyn..."

I froze.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had no reason to be standing there.

I reached for the drawer beneath my desk.

My hand touched the old military insignia inside.

Not as a weapon.

As a reminder.

Fear made people careless.

I had learned that long before I left the military.

I slowly opened the office door.

Michael Whitmore stood there.

His face was pale.

His confident expression was gone.

For the first time, he looked like someone who had been running from something.

"You followed me."

He looked away.

"No."

"Then how did you know where I was?"

Silence.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

"Come inside."

Michael hesitated.

Then entered.

I closed the door behind him.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The man who had spent months defending his family was now standing in my office looking like he needed protection from them.

"You heard the message."

It wasn't a question.

Michael looked at my phone.

"Your father called."

I watched his reaction.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

"You knew he was alive."

Michael sat down slowly.

"I knew someone was alive."

"That isn't an answer."

He rubbed his face.

"Evelyn, there are things about your family that you don't understand."

I almost smiled.

"My family?"

I placed the photograph on the desk.

"My father was declared dead fifteen years ago."

Michael looked at the picture.

His expression changed.

"You found it."

"Daniel left it for me."

Michael closed his eyes.

That reaction told me everything.

"Daniel knew."

"Yes."

"And you knew he was investigating."

Michael looked at me.

"He shouldn't have."

My voice became colder.

"Why?"

"Because some truths are buried for a reason."

I stared at him.

"That sounds exactly like something someone says when they are protecting a lie."

Michael looked toward the window.

Then quietly said:

"Your father was part of a classified military operation."

"I already know."

"No, you don't."

His voice changed.

"You know the version they wanted you to know."

I remained silent.

Michael continued.

"Your father was not killed during a mission."

I waited.

"He disappeared after discovering something."

"What?"

Michael hesitated.

"An internal investigation."

"Into what?"

He looked at me.

"Into people inside the military."

The words immediately connected with my past.

My father's disappearance.

Daniel's investigation.

The notebook.

Operation Silver Shield.

Everything was connected.

"Who was involved?"

Michael didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his coat.
