Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried With My Husband

"Victoria."

The voice behind me was impossible.

For six years, I had imagined hearing Daniel's voice again.

In dreams.

In memories.

In those quiet moments when I looked at old photographs and wished I could ask him one more question.

But never like this.

Never standing in front of his grave.

I turned slowly.

And there he was.

A man standing between the trees.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Daniel Hart.

My husband.

Emily gasped behind me.

"Mom..."

I couldn't move.

I couldn't breathe.

Every part of me wanted to believe this was some cruel trick.

A hallucination caused by exhaustion.

A person who looked like him.

Anyone.

Anything.

Except the truth.

Except Daniel.

"You're alive."

My voice barely came out.

Daniel looked at me with the same eyes I remembered.

The same eyes that had watched Emily take her first steps.

The same eyes that had looked at me before every dangerous mission.

"I knew you would find it eventually."

Anger hit me before relief.

I stepped forward.

"You let me believe you were dead."

His expression changed.

Pain.

Regret.

"I had no choice."

"No choice?"

My voice became louder.

"My daughter was hurt."

His face changed immediately.

"Emily?"

He looked past me.

And when he saw her, something broke in his expression.

The powerful soldier.

The man who had faced danger without fear.

He looked like a father who had just realized he almost lost his child.

"Emily."

She stared at him.

Unable to speak.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Dad?"

Daniel took one step forward.

But she didn't move.

Because six years was a long time.

Six years of believing someone was gone.

Six years of learning how to live without him.

Six years of missing someone who was still alive.

"Why?" she whispered.

Daniel lowered his head.

"I was trying to protect you."

Emily shook her head.

"By leaving me?"

The words hurt him.

I could see it.

But I didn't let him escape.

"Start talking."

Daniel looked at me.

"You deserve the truth."

"Yes."

I stepped closer.

"Now."

He looked around the cemetery.

"Not here."

I almost laughed.

"After everything, you're still worried about being followed?"

His expression became serious.

"Because we are."

Those words stopped me.

"What?"

Daniel looked toward the trees.

"The Prescott family isn't the only threat."

I remembered the documents.

The photos.

The messages.

"The person who betrayed you," I said.

Daniel looked at me.

"You found Thomas."

I froze.

"How do you know?"

"Because Thomas was the reason I disappeared."

Emily looked confused.

"But he was your best friend."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"That's what everyone thought."

We moved to a small abandoned building near the edge of the cemetery.

Daniel unlocked the door.

Inside was another hidden room.

Another place where secrets had been stored.

I was beginning to realize my husband had lived an entire life I knew nothing about.

Daniel turned on the light.

On the table were files.

Photos.

Records.

Evidence.

All connected.

"You were investigating the Prescotts," I said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

"Because they were involved in something bigger."

He opened a folder.

Inside were financial records.

Names.

Companies.

Payments.

"The Prescotts were moving money through fake charities and private organizations."

I studied the documents.

"And Thomas?"

Daniel's face hardened.

"Thomas was helping me investigate."

I frowned.

"But you said he betrayed you."

"He did."

Daniel pulled out another file.

"He wasn't working for the Prescotts at first."

I opened it.

Inside was a photo.

Thomas.

Margaret Prescott.

And another person.

The same person from the old photograph.

The person I thought was dead.

My hands went cold.

"Who is that?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because whatever he was about to say was something he had been carrying for years.

"Your former commander."

I stared at him.

"General Richard Cole?"

Daniel nodded.

The name hit me like a memory from another life.

A respected military leader.

A man who trained some of the best officers in the country.

A man who attended Daniel's funeral.

A man who stood beside me and told me he was sorry for my loss.

"He died eight years ago," I said.

Daniel looked at me.

"No."

The room went silent.

"He disappeared."

I looked back at the photograph.

Everything started connecting.

The Prescott family's power.

The hidden money.

Daniel's investigation.

His fake death.

Thomas's betrayal.

"What happened the night you died?"

Daniel sat down.

"I found proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That Richard Cole was controlling everything."

Emily stepped closer.

"And Ethan?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Ethan was never the leader."

My daughter went still.

"Then why did he marry me?"

Daniel looked away.

"Because your marriage gave them access."

My stomach tightened.

"Access to what?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

"To you."

Silence.

Emily stepped back.

"No."

Daniel's expression broke.

"I tried to stop it."

"But you didn't."

"I thought I had more time."

She shook her head.

"You let me marry into that family."

"I didn't know Ethan was involved until it was too late."

I watched my daughter.

The pain on her face.

The betrayal.

The confusion.

Everything she had been carrying alone.

Daniel walked toward her.

"I'm sorry."

Emily didn't answer.

For a moment, I saw the little girl who waited at the window for her father to come home.

Then I saw the woman who had survived something terrible.

"I need time."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened it.

One message.

A picture.

My heart stopped.

It showed Daniel and me.

But not from years ago.

From yesterday.

Outside the cemetery.

Someone had been watching us.

Then another message appeared.

You found him. Now we find you.

I showed Daniel.

His expression changed immediately.

"They know."

"Who?"

He looked toward the door.

"The people who have been waiting for this moment."

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Then another.

Then another.

Daniel moved quickly.

He turned off the lights.

Everyone became silent.

Emily grabbed my hand.

I could feel her shaking.

Daniel looked through the window.

His face changed.

Because whoever was outside wasn't hiding.

They wanted us to know they were there.

"How many?" I whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

He was staring at one person standing beneath the cemetery lights.

A person holding a folder.

A person we thought was dead.

And then Daniel whispered:

"That's impossible."

May you like

The figure stepped closer.

And Daniel said the name I never expected to hear again.
