Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The first thing I noticed when I entered the old military storage facility was the silence.
Not normal silence.
The kind of silence that meant someone had been there before me.
Someone who didn't want to be found.
I kept one hand near my side, scanning the dark room ahead.
Emily stayed behind me.
For the first time in years, I wasn't walking into danger alone.
I was walking into it with my daughter.
The old facility looked exactly how I remembered it.
Dust-covered shelves.
Rusting metal cabinets.
Broken lights hanging from the ceiling.
A place forgotten by everyone except the people who needed it to stay hidden.
Daniel had brought me here once.
Only once.
Six months before his death.
At the time, I thought it was just another military storage location.
Now I wasn't so sure.
"Mom," Emily whispered.
I turned.
"What?"
She pointed toward the floor.
There was a trail.
Fresh footprints.
Someone had entered recently.
I looked at them carefully.
One person.
Maybe two.
They weren't trying to hide.
They wanted someone to follow.
And that bothered me more.
I moved forward slowly.
Every instinct I had from years in the military told me something was wrong.
The facility was abandoned.
But the lights were on.
The door was unlocked.
Someone had sent us here.
That meant someone wanted us to find something.
Or someone wanted us trapped.
We reached the main storage area.
Rows of old boxes filled the room.
Most were marked with military codes.
I searched through them.
Nothing.
Then Emily stopped.
"Mom."
I looked at her.
She was standing beside an old metal cabinet.
Her hand was resting on a label.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
Daniel's.
The label read:
HART PRIVATE ARCHIVE
I opened it.
Inside were folders.
Photographs.
Documents.
And a small black notebook.
Emily reached for it.
But I stopped her.
"Wait."
She looked at me.
"Why?"
"Because your father was careful."
I picked up the notebook.
It was heavier than it looked.
Inside the first page was a sentence.
If you found this, then Victoria knows the truth is already coming.
I felt my chest tighten.
Daniel had written this knowing I might find it.
Knowing he might not be there.
I turned the page.
There were names.
Dates.
Meetings.
Payments.
And one name appeared again and again.
Margaret Prescott.
Emily covered her mouth.
"No..."
I looked at her.
"You didn't know?"
She shook her head.
"No."
I continued reading.
Daniel had been investigating the Prescott family for almost a year before he died.
Not because of business.
Not because of money.
Because of something much bigger.
A private organization.
A network of powerful families who used influence to control people.
The Prescott family wasn't just wealthy.
They were connected.
Judges.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
People who could erase problems before anyone noticed.
And my husband had been collecting evidence against them.
But there was something else.
A photograph slipped from the notebook.
I picked it up.
My hands went cold.
It showed Daniel.
Standing beside Ethan Prescott.
Not at the wedding.
Not at a family event.
Years earlier.
Before Emily even met him.
"They knew each other," Emily whispered.
I didn't answer.
Because I was trying to understand.
Why would Daniel investigate Ethan's family?
Why would he allow Emily to marry him?
Unless...
Unless Daniel never knew Ethan was involved.
A sound came from behind us.
A small movement.
I turned instantly.
Nothing.
The room was empty.
But the feeling remained.
Someone was watching.
I grabbed the notebook and motioned for Emily to move.
We stepped deeper into the facility.
At the back of the room, we found another door.
It wasn't marked.
No label.
No code.
Just a plain steel door.
Locked.
Emily looked at me.
"What's behind that?"
I examined it.
Then I noticed something.
A small keypad.
Four numbers.
My eyes moved to the notebook.
There was a date written repeatedly.
The date Daniel died.
I entered the numbers.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a small hidden office.
And on the desk was a laptop.
Still running.
Emily stared.
"Someone was here."
I nodded.
The screen showed one file.
No password.
No protection.
Just a single folder.
Named:
VICTORIA.
My breathing slowed.
Because Daniel had prepared this.
For me.
I opened it.
The first video appeared.
Daniel sat in front of the camera.
Older.
Tired.
Different from the man I remembered.
He looked directly into the lens.
"Victoria."
My eyes filled instantly.
Hearing his voice after six years felt impossible.
"I don't know when you'll see this."
He paused.
"But if you're watching, then I failed to stop them."
Emily stepped closer.
Daniel continued.
"The Prescott family is dangerous. But they are not the only ones."
I froze.
Not the only ones.
He looked down for a moment.
Like he was choosing his words carefully.
"The person who betrayed me was someone close."
The video stopped.
Just like that.
Emily looked at me.
"That's it?"
I clicked the file again.
Nothing.
Only one sentence appeared on the screen.
FILE 2 REQUIRES AUTHORIZATION.
I searched the room.
Nothing.
No password.
No instructions.
Then I noticed something beneath the laptop.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words.
Trust the person you abandoned.
I stared at the sentence.
Because only one person came to mind.
Someone I hadn't spoken to in years.
Someone Daniel had defended until the day he died.
Someone who disappeared immediately after his funeral.
Emily looked at me.
"Mom?"
I folded the paper.
"I need to make a call."
"Who?"
I looked at the old photograph of Daniel.
The answer hurt before I even said it.
"Your father's best friend."
I picked up my phone.
I searched through old contacts.
A number I had deleted years ago.
But never forgotten.
I pressed call.
One ring.
Two rings.
Three.
Then someone answered.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then a familiar voice came through.
"Victoria."
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
A voice I thought I would never hear again.
"Where is my husband’s evidence?" I asked.
Silence.
Then the man whispered:
"You found Daniel's archive."
I looked at Emily.
"Who are you working with?"
Another pause.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Victoria, before you accuse the Prescott family..."
The lights inside the facility suddenly went out.
Emily grabbed my arm.
The phone remained against my ear.
May you like
And the voice on the other end whispered:
"Look behind you."
