Chapter 4 - The Ledger

Daniel Mercer entered carrying a red leather ledger.

Evelyn stared at it.

"Get out."

Daniel removed his gloves.

"Merry Christmas to you too."

Brandon stepped between them.

"Mr. Mercer, I'm Brandon Carter."

"I know."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"And you must be Lily."

The girl nodded cautiously.

Daniel's expression softened.

"Your grandfather talked about you constantly."

Evelyn snapped, "Why are you here?"

Daniel held up the ledger.

"Because Henry asked me to come if Samuel ever activated the review."

Samuel frowned.

"You knew about the trigger?"

"Henry gave me instructions."

"When?"

"Two weeks before he died."

Evelyn looked at Samuel.

"You said you controlled the estate documents."

"I do."

Daniel tapped the ledger.

"This isn't an estate document."

They returned to the dining room.

The candle still sat beside Lily's plate.

Its little flame had burned low.

Daniel placed the red ledger on the table.

"Twenty-six years ago, Henry and Evelyn created an informal family assistance account."

Brandon nodded.

"I've heard of it."

"It paid emergency expenses. Tuition. Medical bills. Down payments."

Claire looked uncomfortable.

Daniel continued.

"Over time, Evelyn began treating distributions as rewards."

Evelyn laughed.

"My money."

"Partly."

Daniel opened the ledger.

"But the foundation reimbursed many of those payments."

Samuel leaned closer.

"That's a governance issue."

"Exactly."

Brandon frowned.

"What does that have to do with Lily?"

Daniel turned several pages.

"After Lily was born, Henry instructed me to create equal annual education contributions for every grandchild."

Rachel's stomach tightened.

"Every grandchild?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Twenty thousand dollars per year."

Brandon stared.

"Lily doesn't have an account like that."

"I know."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"Because your mother canceled it."

Silence.

Brandon slowly turned.

"You what?"

Evelyn folded her arms.

"I redirected unnecessary allocations."

"To where?"

Daniel answered.

"Other grandchildren."

Tyler's mother gasped.

Claire went pale.

Daniel pointed to the entries.

"Henry approved equal contributions. Evelyn instructed me to remove Lily from the schedule after the first year."

"Why?" Rachel asked.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"She said Lily would benefit through Brandon anyway."

Brandon's voice became dangerously quiet.

"You took money Dad specifically set aside for my daughter?"

"I managed family resources."

"You excluded her."

"I made a financial decision."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. You made a personal one."

Evelyn glared at him.

"And that's why I fired you."

"You didn't fire me."

Daniel closed the ledger.

"I resigned because you asked me to falsify the beneficiary schedule."

Samuel's head snapped up.

"Do you have that request?"

Daniel opened the back pocket of the ledger.

Inside was a photocopied memorandum.

"I kept it."

Evelyn's face changed.

Rachel watched Brandon absorb the truth.

The candle was no longer an isolated cruelty.

It was a pattern spanning years.

"How much should Lily's account contain?" he asked.

Daniel calculated silently.

"With the missed contributions and conservative growth, approximately one hundred and forty-eight thousand dollars."

Rachel sat down.

She wasn't thinking about the money.

She was thinking about all the times Evelyn had told Lily that her cousins had "earned" privileges she hadn't.

All the subtle lessons.

Who deserved more.

Who belonged less.

Lily tugged Rachel's sleeve.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Did Grandma steal from me?"

Every adult froze.

Rachel crouched.

"That's something the grown-ups have to figure out."

"But Grandpa wanted me to have it?"

"Yes."

Lily thought.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

"Why didn't you want me to have what Grandpa wanted me to have?"

Evelyn couldn't answer.

No legal argument could defeat the simplicity of the question.

"I was trying to protect the family," she finally said.

"From me?"

"No."

"Then from who?"

Evelyn looked at Rachel.

That was answer enough.

Rachel stood.

"This was never about Lily."

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"It was always about me."

"Don't flatter yourself."

"You couldn't control Brandon after he married me."

"Rachel."

"You hated that he stopped asking your permission."

"I hated watching my son become irresponsible."

"By building his own life?"

"By forgetting who made his life possible."

Brandon stared at her.

There it was again.

The debt beneath every kindness.

Evelyn looked around the room.

"Every person here has benefited from what I built."

Claire spoke.

"Dad built it too."

Evelyn turned.

"Your father couldn't remember to pay an electric bill."

Daniel almost smiled.

"Henry remembered more than you think."

Evelyn ignored him.

"I kept this family together."

"No," Claire said.

"You kept us dependent."

Evelyn's face hardened.

Claire continued.

"You paid for things so we'd be afraid to disagree with you."

"Then return the money."

"I will."

That surprised everyone.

Claire took a breath.

"I'll sell the lake property."

Evelyn blinked.

"What?"

"You helped with the down payment. I'll calculate what I owe."

"Don't be ridiculous."

"I'm serious."

Tyler's father spoke next.

"So am I."

Then Madison's mother.

One after another, the adults who had spent years orbiting Evelyn began stepping away.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody insulted her.

They simply stopped accepting the premise that money gave her ownership of them.

Evelyn looked suddenly smaller.

But not defeated.

She turned toward Lily.

"This is what happens when children are allowed into adult matters."

Brandon stepped forward.

"Don't."

Evelyn ignored him.

"You think you've won something today?"

Lily stared at her.

"I didn't know we were playing."

Daniel looked away to hide an expression.

Rachel nearly smiled despite herself.

Evelyn grabbed the candle.

"This ridiculous thing has caused enough trouble."

Lily reached instinctively toward it.

"Grandma—"

Evelyn dropped it into a wastebasket.

Brandon pulled it back out.

"That's hers."

"It's garbage."

"She decides that."

He handed it to Lily.

Lily held the candle against her dress.

Then she did something nobody expected.

She walked to Evelyn.

"Grandma?"

"What?"

"You can have my tablet."

Evelyn stared.

"What tablet?"

"Dad said Santa might bring me one at home."

Brandon's eyes filled.

Lily continued.

"You can have it if that's why you're mad."

Rachel's heart broke.

Evelyn's expression changed.

For one second, something human slipped through.

Then pride closed over it.

"I don't need your tablet."

"Okay."

Lily returned to her mother.

Daniel packed the ledger.

Samuel gathered his documents.

The Christmas morning was effectively over.

But before anyone could leave, Samuel's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression tightened.

"Are you certain?"

Everyone watched him.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I understand."

He ended the call.

Brandon stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Samuel looked at Evelyn.

"The title office just flagged an attempted transfer of this property."

Evelyn went still.

Daniel frowned.

"Transfer to whom?"

Samuel checked the message again.

"An LLC."

"What LLC?"

Samuel read the name.

Rachel had never heard it.

Daniel had.

His face drained of color.

"That's impossible."

Brandon looked at him.

"Why?"

Daniel stared at Evelyn.

"Because that company belongs to someone Henry spent twenty years keeping away from this family."

May you like

Outside, headlights swept across the windows.

A second car had just turned into the driveway.
