Chapter 9 - The Truth Lauren Buried

I stared at the name written on the envelope.
Lauren.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt like it had stopped breathing.
Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.
Not the ghost of his father.
Not the ghost of his past.
Something worse.
The truth.
"Lauren?" I whispered.
The man holding the envelope smiled.
"Yes."
My eyes moved to Daniel.
"Your wife?"
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
I felt something inside me collapse.
Because Lauren had been standing in my home.
She had hugged me.
She had called me Mom.
She had watched me send money.
She had watched me defend Daniel.
And all this time...
She knew.
"Daniel."
His eyes filled with shame.
"Mom, I can explain."
I looked at him.
"Can you?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The older man laughed quietly.
"That's always been Daniel's problem."
Richard stepped forward.
"Give me the envelope."
The man looked at him.
"Still trying to control the story?"
Richard's face hardened.
"You have no right to hold that."
"No?"
The man lifted the envelope.
"I think I have every right."
He looked at me.
"Because this contains the truth your husband tried to hide."
I looked at Richard.
"Did you hide something from me?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
That hesitation hurt.
More than I expected.
"Richard."
He lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
My heart sank.
"Why?"
"Because I was trying to protect you."
I almost laughed.
The same words.
Again.
"Everyone keeps protecting me."
My voice shook.
"But somehow I am always the last person to know anything."
Nobody spoke.
The older man stepped closer.
"My name is Edward Caldwell."
I looked at him.
"Thomas's brother."
Richard's expression changed.
"You're the one who started this."
Edward smiled.
"No."
He looked at Daniel.
"Your son did."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Don't put this on me."
Edward tilted his head.
"You found the documents."
"Because you wanted me to."
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked away.
Edward answered.
"When Daniel was eighteen, he was angry. Confused. His father disappeared. His mother was struggling."
He looked at me.
"He needed someone to blame."
Richard's voice became cold.
"And you gave him someone."
Edward smiled.
"I gave him the truth."
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"You gave him a lie that looked like the truth."
I looked at the envelope.
"What is inside?"
Edward held it tighter.
"Everything."
"Everything about what?"
He looked at me.
"About why Richard disappeared."
The room became silent.
I stepped closer.
"Open it."
Edward smiled.
"You don't want to know."
"Yes, I do."
He looked surprised.
Maybe because after twenty years, I was finally done being afraid.
"Open it."
Slowly, Edward handed me the envelope.
My fingers touched the paper.
It felt old.
Like it had been waiting.
I opened it.
Inside was a stack of documents.
The first page was a bank record.
The same account.
The same account that received my money.
But this time, there was more.
A signature.
A name.
Lauren's father.
And beneath it...
Lauren.
My hands started shaking.
"No."
Daniel stepped beside me.
"Mom."
I looked at him.
"She knew."
His face changed.
"I didn't know she was involved."
"Daniel."
"I swear."
His voice broke.
"I knew her father was involved. I didn't know about her."
I looked back at the papers.
There were dates.
Transfers.
Messages.
Records.
Years of secrets.
My entire life reduced to paperwork.
Edward watched me.
"Lauren married Daniel because she loved him."
Daniel looked at him.
Edward continued:
"But she also needed access."
My stomach tightened.
"Access to what?"
Edward looked at Richard.
"To finish what her father started."
Richard closed his eyes.
"Unbelievable."
I looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"Again."
My voice cracked.
"You suspected again."
Richard looked destroyed.
"I didn't know how deep it went."
I looked at Daniel.
"And you?"
He shook his head.
"I loved her."
The pain in his voice was real.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because he had been betrayed too.
Edward took another paper from the envelope.
"This is the part nobody knows."
He placed it on the table.
A handwritten note.
Richard's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My hands moved toward it.
I read the first line.
Margaret, if you are reading this, it means I failed to stop them.
My breathing stopped.
I continued.
I need you to know one thing. I never left you.
Tears filled my eyes.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of believing I wasn't enough.
That he chose to leave.
The next sentence blurred.
The night I disappeared, I found out who was moving the money.
I looked at Richard.
He looked away.
It was someone inside our family. Someone Daniel trusted. Someone who would use his pain against him.
I kept reading.
I tried to expose them. They found out.
My hands shook.
Then the final line appeared.
But before they came for me, I made one copy of the evidence and gave it to the only person I believed could keep it safe.
I looked up.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Edward looked toward the front door.
Richard looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked terrified.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Lauren.
My blood ran cold.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
"Mom, please don't let them show you the last page."
I stared at the screen.
Daniel saw the message.
"Why would she call you Mom?"
Nobody spoke.
Then another message arrived.
This time with a photo.
I opened it.
It showed Lauren sitting in a car.
Crying.
Holding a document.
And behind her was a familiar place.
A place I knew.
A place connected to the night Richard disappeared.
The message below the photo appeared.
"I didn't betray you. I was trying to stop him."
I looked at Richard.
Then Edward.
Then Daniel.
Because suddenly I realized something.
May you like
We had been looking at the wrong person all along.
And the last page of Richard's letter was already missing.
