Chapter 7 - The Person Behind the Door

The handle moved.
Slowly.
Almost carefully.
Like whoever was outside wasn't trying to break in.
They wanted us to know they were there.
Richard stepped in front of me.
"No matter what happens," he whispered, "do not trust the first thing you hear."
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
He didn't answer.
The lock clicked.
My entire body went still.
The door opened a few inches.
A figure stood in the darkness outside.
I couldn't see the face.
Only the outline.
Tall.
Still.
Watching.
Then a voice came.
"Mom?"
My heart stopped.
Daniel.
I almost moved forward.
Almost.
But Richard grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
The person outside stepped into the light from the porch.
It was Daniel.
His face was pale.
His hair was messy.
He looked nothing like the confident man who had closed the door on me two nights earlier.
He looked scared.
"Mom."
His eyes moved to Richard.
Then back to me.
"Are you okay?"
I pulled my arm away from Richard.
"Why are you here?"
Daniel looked at the darkness behind him.
"Because someone is watching this house."
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
"Now you care?"
His expression changed.
"Mom..."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don't get to come here after twenty years of secrets and act like you are protecting me."
Daniel looked down.
"I know."
"Do you?"
My voice cracked.
"Because I don't even know who you are anymore."
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn't look away.
For years, I had swallowed every painful word because I was afraid of losing him.
I wasn't afraid anymore.
Daniel stepped inside and closed the door.
"The person who sent those messages is not trying to help you."
Richard looked at him.
"Neither are you."
Daniel turned sharply.
"You don't get to say that."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"I lost everything because of you."
"No."
Daniel's voice shook.
"You lost everything because you thought you could fix a problem you created."
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
Two men who had shaped my entire life.
Two men who had spent twenty years blaming each other.
And somehow, both were still hiding pieces of the truth.
"Enough."
They both looked at me.
"I want the truth."
Neither spoke.
"Not pieces."
I pointed at Richard.
"Not excuses."
Then at Daniel.
"Not protection."
My voice became louder.
"I want everything."
Daniel sat down.
For a moment, he looked like the eighteen-year-old boy who lost his father.
Not the man who hurt his mother.
"I found out about Dad's debt when I was eighteen."
I listened.
"I found documents hidden in his office."
Richard looked away.
"I thought he destroyed us."
Daniel continued.
"I thought he left because he was selfish."
"Did you?"
He nodded.
"I hated him."
Richard closed his eyes.
"But then I found another file."
Daniel looked at me.
"An account."
My heart tightened.
"The same account that received your money?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
I felt sick.
"You knew?"
"I knew something was wrong."
"Something?"
I stared at him.
"My money went somewhere else for years."
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I didn't know at first."
"Then when did you know?"
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
"Three years ago."
The room became silent.
Three years.
Three years he let me continue sending money.
Three years he watched me believe I was helping him.
"Why?"
His eyes filled with regret.
"Because I was trying to get proof."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Mom..."
"No."
I stood up.
"You were trying to get proof while letting me lose my savings?"
"I was going to fix it."
"Everyone says that."
My voice broke.
"Everyone says they are going to fix it after they break everything."
Daniel looked down.
Then Richard spoke.
"There was another person involved."
I looked at him.
"Lauren's father."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"I know."
I turned.
"You knew too?"
"Yes."
My chest tightened.
"Then why is he still in your life?"
Daniel didn't answer.
That was the answer.
I stepped back.
"Oh my God."
Daniel immediately stood.
"Mom, it's not what you think."
"Then what is it?"
"He has something over me."
The room froze.
"What?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"After Dad disappeared, I found out the truth about the accounts."
He swallowed.
"But before I could tell anyone, he found out I knew."
"What did he do?"
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"He showed me a video."
Richard's face changed.
"What video?"
Daniel looked at him.
"The night you disappeared."
Nobody moved.
My heart started racing.
"You saw it?"
Daniel nodded.
"He showed me what happened."
I grabbed the table.
"What happened that night?"
Daniel looked at me.
And for the first time in twenty years, my son looked like he was afraid of the answer.
"Dad didn't leave."
Richard looked away.
"No."
Daniel continued.
"He was taken."
I felt the room spinning.
"What?"
"The car outside wasn't his."
Richard whispered.
"It was theirs."
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Daniel is finally telling you the truth."
Then another message appeared.
A photograph.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
It was a picture from twenty years ago.
The night Richard disappeared.
Richard was standing beside a black sedan.
But he wasn't alone.
Someone else was there.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I had trusted.
I looked closer.
And then I saw the person standing next to him.
The person who had been controlling everything.
The person who knew every secret.
The person who had been part of our family for twenty years.
Daniel saw my face change.
"Mom?"
I slowly turned the phone toward him.
His expression disappeared.
Because he recognized the person too.
And then someone knocked on the door.
Three times.
Slow.
Calm.
Like they knew we were all inside.
Daniel whispered:
"That's impossible."
I looked at him.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
Then the person outside spoke.
A familiar voice.
A voice from our past.
A voice Daniel had not heard since he was eighteen.
"Danny..."
May you like
Daniel stepped back.
Because the person standing outside was the one person he believed could never come back.
