Chapter 5 - The Brother in the Empty House

“Put it down,” Marcus ordered.

Alexander smiled.

“You always did surround yourself with people who followed orders, Daniel.”

Daniel stared at him.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Same dark hair.

Same jaw.

Same eyes.

But something in Alexander’s expression felt hollow.

“You took Lily.”

“I borrowed my daughter.”

“She isn’t your daughter.”

Alexander’s smile vanished.

Daniel knew immediately.

He had not known.

“You’re lying.”

“Samuel Grant was her father.”

Alexander looked toward Emma.

“You told him?”

Emma shook her head.

“Claire did.”

Daniel held up the memory card.

Alexander’s hand tightened around the gun.

“That belongs to me.”

“No. It belonged to Claire.”

“She was my wife.”

“She was afraid of you.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“Claire was afraid of everyone by the end.”

“Why?”

“Because she discovered your precious family was rotten.”

“Our family.”

Alexander’s expression sharpened.

“There is no ‘our.’”

Richard spoke.

“Alexander.”

“Shut up.”

The gun swung toward him.

Marcus shifted.

Alexander noticed.

“Don’t.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“What do you want?”

“My inheritance.”

“You kidnapped a four-year-old for money?”

“I thought she was my daughter.”

“That makes it worse.”

Alexander’s face twisted.

“You grew up with everything.”

“You think that excuses this?”

“You had the name. The schools. The houses. Father introduced you as his miracle son while my mother worked two jobs.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“What did you mean when you said my father wasn’t biological?”

Alexander laughed.

“You still don’t know?”

Richard whispered, “Daniel’s biological father was Jonathan Grant.”

Daniel stared.

Grant.

“Samuel’s father?”

Richard nodded.

Daniel struggled.

That made Samuel his half-brother.

Lily was his niece after all.

Not through Whitfield blood.

Through Grant blood.

Claire had unknowingly connected their lives again.

Alexander watched realization spread across Daniel’s face.

“Beautiful, isn’t it? Your father spent his life protecting a bloodline that wasn’t even his.”

Daniel barely heard him.

His mother had loved Jonathan Grant before marrying Charles Whitfield.

Daniel was Jonathan’s son.

Charles knew.

He raised Daniel anyway.

Then spent years hiding it.

Alexander was Charles’s biological son.

The heir Charles refused to acknowledge.

Every secret had fed another.

Alexander wanted revenge for being erased.

Claire became trapped between them.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You deserved the truth.”

Alexander blinked.

“You deserved recognition.”

The gun dipped slightly.

“You deserved a father who acknowledged you.”

Emma looked at Daniel.

“But Lily didn’t deserve what you did.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

“Neither did Claire.”

“She betrayed me.”

“She was afraid of you.”

“I loved her!”

“You threatened her.”

“I protected her!”

“You hunted her.”

Alexander’s hand shook.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t protect people by making them afraid.”

Alexander’s eyes filled.

For one second, Daniel saw a wounded child beneath the rage.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Alexander panicked.

He raised the gun.

Marcus moved.

A shot exploded.

Emma screamed.

Daniel hit the floor.

The bullet struck the wall.

Marcus tackled Alexander.

Police rushed upstairs.

Seconds later, it was over.

Alexander lay handcuffed.

Daniel stood.

No one had been hit.

Alexander looked at him from the floor.

“You think this ends with me?”

Daniel paused.

Alexander smiled.

“Ask Richard who signed the final trial authorization.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard’s face collapsed.

Back at the mansion, Richard confessed.

Daniel’s father had authorized the illegal trial.

But Richard had signed the final documents.

He had known patients were being exposed to an unsafe drug.

“Why?”

Richard cried for the first time Daniel could remember.

“Your father said the company would collapse.”

“People died.”

“I know.”

“You let him bury it.”

“Yes.”

Daniel called federal authorities himself.

He turned over everything.

The Whitfield name exploded across national news within hours.

Markets reacted.

Board members called.

Lawyers begged Daniel to delay.

He refused.

Whitfield Capital shares in several holdings fell.

Daniel lost hundreds of millions on paper.

He did not care.

Claire had asked him to prove he was different.

This was the price.

Richard surrendered.

Alexander was charged with kidnapping, extortion, assault, and conspiracy.

Investigators reopened Samuel Grant’s death.

Evidence linked Alexander to the marina where Samuel’s boat had been sabotaged.

Emma listened silently when Daniel told her.

“He killed Lily’s father?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“You think he did.”

“Yes.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Daniel sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For all of it.”

“You didn’t do it.”

“My family did.”

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“You aren’t responsible for every terrible thing someone with your last name did.”

He smiled sadly.

“Claire said almost the same thing.”

Emma looked at him.

“She believed in you.”

“I didn’t deserve it.”

“Maybe she wasn’t asking whether you deserved it.”

“What was she asking?”

“What you’d do with it.”

Daniel thought about that for a long time.

That evening, Lily found him beside the Christmas tree.

The ballroom was empty now.

Broken glasses had been cleared.

Music was gone.

She carried the bear.

“Party over?”

“Yes.”

“Because of me?”

Daniel crouched.

“No.”

“Because Bear?”

He smiled.

“Bear helped.”

Lily held him out.

“You can have him.”

Daniel stared.

“He’s yours.”

“You’re sad.”

“So you’re giving me your bear?”

She nodded.

Daniel swallowed.

“No.”

Lily frowned.

“You keep him. But maybe sometimes I can visit him.”

She considered this.

“Okay.”

Emma watched from the doorway.

Something warm passed between them.

Daniel stood.

“You should both stay through New Year’s.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“You’re very used to giving orders.”

“I’ve been told.”

“We’ll stay until the investigation says it’s safe.”

“I’ll accept that.”

“For now.”

“For now.”

Daniel almost smiled.

His phone vibrated.

Marcus.

Daniel answered.

“What happened?”

Marcus’s voice was urgent.

“We recovered Claire’s missing records.”

“Where?”

“From Alexander’s storage unit.”

“And?”

“There’s a second recording.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“What recording?”

“Claire speaking to your father three days before he died.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

Marcus continued.

“Daniel, she asked him one question.”

“What?”

“Who ordered Samuel Grant’s death?”

Daniel went cold.

“And what did my father say?”

Marcus paused.

“He gave her a name.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Whose?”

Marcus answered.

Daniel looked across the ballroom.

Emma saw his face change.

“What is it?”

May you like

Daniel lowered the phone.

The name Marcus had given him belonged to someone who had been standing beside Lily on Christmas Eve.
