Chapter 4 - Claire’s Last Secret

“No.”
Daniel hit play again.
Same result.
Claire’s face.
Her warning.
Then:
“Lily is not Alexander’s biological daughter.”
Black.
Marcus inspected the file.
“Corrupted.”
“Recover it.”
“I’ll try.”
Emma sat motionless.
“You didn’t know?”
Daniel asked.
“No.”
“You adopted Lily without knowing who her biological father was?”
“Claire refused to tell me.”
Richard looked sick.
Daniel noticed.
“You know.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not for certain.”
“Enough.”
Richard sat.
“Your father believed Claire had evidence against him. Years later, when she resurfaced, he was already ill.”
Daniel remembered.
His father died six years ago.
“Claire came back?”
“She contacted him.”
“Why?”
Richard stared at Lily’s teddy bear.
“She wanted something.”
“What?”
“A confession.”
Daniel felt cold.
“She recorded him?”
Richard nodded.
“Your father admitted to falsifying clinical records and paying doctors to conceal injuries.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“Where is the recording?”
Richard pointed toward the memory card.
“Possibly there.”
Marcus worked for nearly an hour.
At 2:14 a.m., the damaged video recovered.
Claire appeared again.
“I told Alexander Lily was his because I was afraid.”
Emma whispered, “Claire…”
Claire continued.
“Alexander had become obsessed with the Whitfield inheritance. When he learned I was pregnant, he saw our baby as leverage.”
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“So I lied.”
A pause.
“Lily’s father was a doctor named Samuel Grant.”
Emma covered her mouth.
She knew the name.
“He worked with Claire,” she whispered.
Claire explained.
Samuel Grant had been a physician at the clinic investigating Whitfield Biotherapeutics.
He and Claire collected evidence.
They fell in love.
Alexander discovered them.
Samuel died in what police called a boating accident.
Claire never believed it.
Neither did Daniel now.
Claire continued.
“Alexander thinks Lily is his. Let him keep believing that until she’s safe.”
Daniel exhaled.
Lily was not his blood relative after all.
Strangely, it changed nothing.
He still felt responsible for her.
Claire’s final words were simple.
“Daniel, I know what your father did to us. But you are not him. Please prove I was right.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel turned toward Richard.
“You knew Samuel died.”
Richard nodded.
“Did Alexander kill him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did my father?”
“No.”
“You’re certain?”
“Yes.”
Daniel believed him.
Not because Richard deserved trust.
Because for the first time that night, the answer had come without hesitation.
Marcus entered with another report.
“Alexander’s been living under aliases. Europe. Canada. Chicago.”
“Current location?”
“Unknown.”
“He was outside my house two hours ago.”
“We’re searching.”
Daniel looked at Emma.
“You and Lily are staying here.”
“No.”
“Emma.”
“She was kidnapped here.”
“And recovered because this estate has resources you don’t.”
Emma looked hurt.
Daniel softened.
“I’m not saying that to insult you.”
“I know.”
“I can put twenty people between Lily and anyone who wants her.”
“What if the person who wants her is already inside?”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
Emma’s point landed.
By dawn, police had interviewed Thomas.
He admitted Alexander personally recruited him.
Carlisle Holdings had not knowingly funded the kidnapping.
The payment originated from a dormant subsidiary account that Alexander had hacked.
Vanessa’s involvement remained unclear.
Daniel confronted her privately.
“You paid Alexander ten million dollars.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
“From what?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“The scandal.”
“That wasn’t your decision.”
“I loved you.”
“Loved?”
She realized the tense.
Daniel did too.
Vanessa looked away.
“I thought we were building a future.”
“So did I.”
“And now?”
Daniel thought of Emma.
Lily.
Claire’s letters.
His father’s crimes.
“There are things I need to understand before I can answer that.”
Vanessa removed her diamond earrings and placed them on the table.
“You’ll blame me because it’s easier than blaming your dead father.”
“I already blame him.”
“And Richard?”
“Him too.”
“And yourself?”
That hit.
Vanessa walked away.
Christmas morning arrived without celebration.
Daniel canceled every scheduled event.
He sat in the kitchen while Lily ate pancakes.
She had insisted the teddy bear needed a plate too.
Daniel watched Emma cut strawberries.
For a moment, the nightmare receded.
Lily held up a strawberry.
“Bear wants one.”
“Does he?” Daniel asked.
She nodded solemnly.
“He likes red.”
Daniel placed the strawberry on the bear’s plate.
Emma smiled despite herself.
It was the first time Daniel had seen her smile.
“You’re good with her,” she said.
“I have no idea what I’m doing.”
“Neither does anyone.”
Lily pointed at him.
“You’re sad.”
Daniel blinked.
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
“What should I do?”
She thought.
“Eat pancakes.”
Emma laughed.
Daniel did too.
It surprised him.
Later, Marcus entered.
“We found Alexander.”
Daniel stood.
“Where?”
“Philadelphia.”
Emma froze.
“Why Philadelphia?”
Marcus looked at her.
“He’s at Rose Reed’s old house.”
They drove there that afternoon.
Police surrounded the property.
The house had been abandoned for years.
Inside, they found photographs covering the walls.
Daniel.
Claire.
Emma.
Lily.
Vanessa.
Richard.
Alexander had watched all of them.
In the basement was a desk.
On it sat a folder labeled:
LILY — PATERNITY.
Daniel opened it.
Samuel Grant’s DNA report.
Confirmed father.
Beside it was another file.
DANIEL WHITFIELD.
Inside were medical records.
Daniel frowned.
“Why does he have my childhood records?”
Marcus read.
Then his expression changed.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“This says your father wasn't your biological father.”
Daniel stared.
Richard, who had accompanied them, sat heavily.
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew.”
Richard’s eyes filled with shame.
“Yes.”
“Who was?”
Richard opened his mouth.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
A shadow moved across the landing.
Then a man’s voice called down.
“Why don’t you ask me yourself, little brother?”
May you like
Alexander stepped into view.
And he was holding a gun.
