Chapter 6 - The Night His Empire Turned Against Him

"No."

Nathaniel's voice echoed through the mansion.

One word.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Claire looked toward Lucy.

The little girl stood beside Maria, holding her repaired rabbit.

Charles spoke again through the intercom.

"The court order disagrees."

Samuel took the document from the security feed.

"Don't open anything until I verify it."

Nathaniel was already calling his attorneys.

Claire knelt beside Lucy.

"You're staying with me."

Lucy nodded.

"Is that old man family?"

Claire hesitated.

"Technically."

Lucy frowned.

"Do I have to like him?"

Despite everything, Claire smiled.

"No."

Nathaniel looked at her.

For one second, so did he.

Then his attorney answered.

The conversation lasted forty seconds.

Nathaniel hung up.

"It's real."

Claire stood.

"What?"

"Emergency petition. Filed this afternoon."

"On what grounds?"

Nathaniel's jaw tightened.

"Parental unfitness."

Claire laughed in disbelief.

"Whose?"

"Mine."

"And mine?"

"No."

That surprised her.

Samuel read the filing.

Charles alleged Nathaniel's criminal associations, corporate investigations, security threats, and unstable household environment made Lucy unsafe.

Claire almost admired the strategy.

Almost.

"He didn't file against me because he wants to separate Nathaniel from Lucy," she said.

Samuel nodded.

"And use Claire's departure as evidence of household instability."

Nathaniel looked at her.

"My divorce filing helped him."

"Yes."

The realization landed hard.

Every move Nathaniel had made to protect his control had strengthened Charles.

The reclassification.

The separation.

The hidden security concerns.

The family instability.

Claire crossed her arms.

"Open the gate."

Nathaniel turned.

"No."

"Open it."

"He wants Lucy."

"He wants us afraid."

Claire looked toward the windows.

"So let's stop hiding."

Ten minutes later, Charles Holloway entered the dining room.

He walked slowly.

Not because he was weak.

Because he knew everyone would wait.

His eyes moved across the family.

Margaret.

Julian.

Nathaniel.

Then Claire.

Finally Lucy.

"There she is."

Nathaniel stepped in front of her.

"Don't."

Charles smiled.

"You always were dramatic."

Claire almost laughed.

Nathaniel had used the same word on her earlier.

Charles looked at Claire.

"You must be the famous wife."

"Ex-wife."

Nathaniel looked at her.

Claire did not apologize.

Charles smiled.

"Good."

He took a seat without being invited.

"I prefer women who know when to leave."

Claire remained standing.

"I prefer men who don't file for custody of children they've never met."

Charles smiled.

"Sharp."

"You have five minutes."

"According to the court, I have considerably longer."

Samuel stepped forward.

"The order grants a hearing. It does not grant custody."

Charles's smile faded slightly.

"Samuel."

"Charles."

"You've become old."

"So have you."

Margaret sat opposite her brother-in-law.

"You should have stayed dead."

Charles looked at her.

"You first."

Nathaniel placed both hands on the table.

"What do you want?"

Charles looked around.

"Truthfully?"

"Try it."

"I want to watch William's legacy collapse."

Nathaniel laughed quietly.

"Then why take the company?"

"Because destroying something is easier when you own it."

Claire said, "And Lucy?"

Charles looked toward her.

"Insurance."

Nathaniel's entire body changed.

Claire saw it.

Charles saw it too.

"Interesting," the old man said. "You hid her so well I almost believed you didn't care."

Nathaniel's voice dropped.

"Say her name again."

Charles smiled.

"Lucille."

Nathaniel took one step.

Claire put her hand against his chest.

"Don't give him what he wants."

Nathaniel stopped.

Charles watched her with new interest.

"You've managed him."

"No."

Claire looked at Nathaniel.

"I'm done managing him."

Then she faced Charles.

"He can manage himself."

Something passed through Nathaniel's eyes.

Respect.

Maybe gratitude.

Charles opened his briefcase.

"Tomorrow's board vote removes Nathaniel."

Nathaniel shrugged.

"Then remove me."

Everyone looked at him.

Charles frowned.

Nathaniel continued.

"You want the chair?"

He pulled out his phone.

"I resign."

Ethan stared.

"Dad."

Nathaniel looked at his son.

"Your grandfather wanted professional management."

He looked at Claire.

"Apparently he was right."

Charles's face changed.

This was not part of the plan.

"You think resigning saves the company?"

"No."

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

"She does."

Claire understood.

He was giving up control.

The thing he had valued over everything.

Charles laughed.

"Claire has no authority."

Samuel placed William's letter on the table.

"Actually..."

Charles went silent.

Claire looked at him.

"I have the maternal election."

For the first time, Charles Holloway lost color.

"William destroyed that."

"No."

"He told me—"

"He lied."

Margaret smiled faintly.

"William learned from the best."

Claire opened the document.

"I am electing to dissolve the family control trust."

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

Charles stood.

"You can't."

"I can."

"You'll destroy the Holloway name."

Claire signed.

"No."

She slid the page toward Samuel.

"I'm removing the price tag from my children."

Charles grabbed his cane.

"You stupid woman."

Nathaniel moved.

Claire raised one hand.

He stopped.

She looked at Charles.

"Every share held for Ethan, Caleb, Noah, and Lucy will transfer into protected independent trusts."

Charles stared.

"You don't have the votes."

"I don't need them."

Samuel stamped the document.

"Effective upon maternal election."

Charles's hands shook.

Claire continued.

"The company enters public restructuring. Independent board. Full audit."

Julian laughed.

Charles looked at him.

"You think this is funny?"

Julian shrugged.

"A little."

"You betrayed me."

"You tried to use a six-year-old child."

Julian's expression hardened.

"Even I have limits."

Charles looked around the room.

He had expected fear.

Instead he found a family finally telling the truth.

It was the one thing his plan had never accounted for.

Then Charles smiled.

Claire didn't like it.

"Very touching."

He reached into his coat.

Nathaniel stepped forward.

Charles removed nothing dangerous.

Only a phone.

He placed it on the table.

"Then perhaps the audit should begin now."

He tapped the screen.

A bank account appeared.

Holloway Holdings.

Unauthorized transfers.

Millions.

Nathaniel stared.

Charles looked at Ethan.

"Ask your father where that money went."

Ethan looked at Nathaniel.

"Dad?"

Nathaniel did not answer.

Claire's stomach tightened.

Charles smiled.

"Not every secret in this family belongs to me."

Claire turned.

"Nathaniel?"

He looked at her.

"I moved the money."

"Why?"

"To protect it."

"From whom?"

Nathaniel glanced at Charles.

"Everyone."

Samuel looked at the transfers.

"Forty-eight million."

Claire remembered the red ledger.

C.H.

Not Charles Holloway.

Claire Holloway?

She looked at Nathaniel.

"What did you do?"

Nathaniel's voice was quiet.

"I created accounts in your name."

Claire stared.

"What?"

"Six years ago."

"Why?"

"For you and Lucy."

The room went silent.

Nathaniel continued.

"After the paternity test, I knew Lucy was mine. I also knew someone wanted her removed from the trust."

Claire's anger returned.

"So you created a secret fortune instead of being her father."

"Yes."

No excuse.

No defense.

Just truth.

Nathaniel looked at Lucy.

"I thought money could protect what I was too afraid to love publicly."

Claire swallowed.

Charles laughed.

"Pathetic."

Nathaniel turned.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"I was."

He stepped toward Charles.

"But tonight I don't need the company."

He looked at Claire.

"I don't need the trust."

Then his eyes moved to his children.

"I need them to know I was wrong."

Ethan looked away.

Caleb's eyes filled.

Noah cried openly.

Lucy simply watched.

Nathaniel knelt beside her.

"I was wrong."

Lucy touched his shoulder.

"About me?"

"About everything."

She considered that.

"That's a lot."

Ethan actually laughed.

So did Caleb.

Even Claire smiled.

Then the sound of sirens approached.

Charles turned toward the window.

Samuel smiled.

"The audit wasn't the only thing William prepared."

Two federal investigators entered with Nathaniel's attorneys.

Charles's face hardened.

Samuel placed the red ledger on the table.

"Thirty years of financial crimes."

Charles stepped backward.

"You can't prove those are mine."

Julian tossed a small recorder onto the table.

"No."

He smiled.

"But I can prove what you told me last month."

Charles stared at him.

"You recorded me?"

"For a month."

Nathaniel looked at Julian.

"You came back to help?"

Julian shrugged.

"Don't ruin it."

Charles was escorted from the house.

Not dramatically.

Not violently.

Simply by the consequences he had spent decades believing would never reach him.

When the front door closed, the mansion became quiet.

Claire looked around.

The same room.

Different family.

Nathaniel stood several feet away.

"Claire."

She met his eyes.

"Don't."

He nodded.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

She stepped closer.

"I am still leaving."

His face fell.

"The truth doesn't repair eighteen years."

"I know."

"And one good night doesn't make you a good husband."

"I know."

"And loving Lucy secretly does not erase what you did to her publicly."

Nathaniel swallowed.

"I know."

Claire took Lucy's hand.

"I'm taking her."

He nodded.

"And the boys decide for themselves."

Nathaniel looked toward them.

Ethan stood first.

"I'm going with Mom."

Caleb followed.

"Me too."

Noah hesitated.

Then walked toward Claire.

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

Claire felt pain for him.

But she did not rescue him from it.

That had been part of their problem.

Nathaniel opened his eyes.

"Okay."

One word.

No resistance.

Claire stopped.

For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Nathaniel Holloway had lost everything he tried to control.

And accepted it.

The children gathered coats.

Margaret offered Claire her townhouse.

Claire refused.

"I have somewhere."

Nathaniel looked surprised.

She smiled faintly.

"The lake property, remember?"

He almost smiled too.

At the doorway, Lucy turned.

"Daddy?"

Nathaniel looked up.

"You can visit."

His face broke.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

"Thank you."

Claire opened the door.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Mom."

Claire stopped.

"What?"

Ethan handed her the phone.

An email had arrived from Samuel's office.

Automated.

Triggered by dissolution of the trust.

Subject:

FINAL INSTRUCTION FROM WILLIAM HOLLOWAY.

Claire opened it.

One sentence appeared.

IF CLAIRE DISSOLVES THE TRUST, TAKE HER TO THE HOUSE ON MERCER STREET.

Nathaniel stared at the message.

Margaret whispered, "That house was destroyed twenty years ago."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

Everyone turned.

He looked at Claire.

"William rebuilt it."

"Why?"

Samuel reached into his pocket.

May you like

He removed a brass key.

"Because that is where he kept the one thing he intended Claire—not Nathaniel—to inherit."
