Chapter 3 - The Son Who Followed Me

Claire did not remember running downstairs.

She remembered Nathaniel catching her before she fell.

She remembered screaming Lucy's name.

She remembered Ethan already dialing the security office.

Then Nathaniel changed.

The husband who had calmly divided his children at dinner disappeared.

The man beneath him emerged.

"Lock the gates."

His voice cut through the dark.

"Nobody leaves the property."

Emergency lights flickered on.

Nathaniel grabbed a radio from the wall cabinet.

"North team, sweep the grounds. East team, check every vehicle. Pull the cameras from the last twenty minutes."

Claire stared.

"You have security teams?"

Nathaniel looked at her.

"Yes."

"How many?"

"Enough."

"Then how did someone take my daughter from upstairs?"

His face went white.

He had no answer.

Ethan came running.

"The west camera feed went black forty seconds before the power."

Nathaniel turned.

"How do you know?"

"I have access."

"You shouldn't."

"Grandpa gave it to me."

That stopped him.

Ethan held up his phone.

"And someone opened the service gate."

Nathaniel took the phone.

A red access log flashed across the screen.

SERVICE GATE 3.

MANUAL OVERRIDE.

AUTHORIZED CODE: N.H.

Claire saw it.

"So whoever took Lucy used your code."

Nathaniel's jaw flexed.

"Or wanted us to think they did."

Claire shoved past him.

"I'm going outside."

"No."

"Move."

"Claire."

"My daughter is gone."

"And whoever took her may still be on the property."

"I don't care."

"I do."

The words came out harder than anything Nathaniel had said all night.

Claire stopped.

He looked terrified.

Not performatively.

Not strategically.

Terrified.

"She's my daughter too."

Claire almost said the cruel thing.

Then she remembered Lucy shrinking when Nathaniel spoke.

She remembered six years of birthdays he had missed.

"You don't get to become her father only when she's missing."

Nathaniel absorbed the blow.

Then he nodded once.

"You're right."

It was the first time in years Claire had heard him say it.

He took off his jacket.

"Stay with Ethan."

"I'm coming."

"No."

Claire stepped closer.

"You lost the right to give me orders."

For a second, something old flashed between them.

The partnership they had once been.

Before money hardened everything.

Nathaniel handed her a flashlight.

"Then stay behind me."

They crossed the grounds together.

Ethan followed.

Caleb and Noah remained with Samuel and the housekeeper.

The service gate stood open.

Beyond it was a private wooded lane.

Fresh tire marks cut through the gravel.

Nathaniel crouched.

"Two vehicles."

Ethan shone his phone light.

"One came in."

Claire pointed.

"And one left."

Nathaniel looked toward the road.

A security SUV pulled up.

A guard stepped out.

"Sir, we found this."

He handed Nathaniel Lucy's rabbit.

Claire grabbed it.

"No."

She pressed it to her chest.

A tiny folded paper protruded from the rabbit's torn seam.

Ethan noticed.

"Mom."

Claire pulled it free.

Three words were written inside.

ASK ABOUT JULIAN.

Nathaniel went completely still.

Claire looked at him.

"Who is Julian?"

Nathaniel said nothing.

"Nathaniel."

His eyes remained on the note.

Ethan whispered, "Dad?"

Nathaniel looked older suddenly.

"Julian was my brother."

Claire stared.

"You don't have a brother."

"I did."

"You've never mentioned him."

"He died."

Samuel's voice came from behind them.

"No, he didn't."

They turned.

Samuel had followed them outside.

Nathaniel's face twisted.

"You knew?"

Samuel nodded.

"William knew."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

Nathaniel grabbed Samuel's coat.

"You told me he died."

"Your father told you."

"Why?"

"Because Julian tried to take control of the trust."

Claire stepped between them.

"Stop."

Nathaniel released him.

Claire held up the note.

"Is Julian Lucy's father?"

Nathaniel looked at her sharply.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Claire heard it.

"So you know who her biological father is?"

Nathaniel froze.

Ethan looked between them.

"Mom?"

Claire felt sick.

"I never cheated on your father."

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

Claire stared at him.

"Then explain."

Samuel spoke quietly.

"Lucy is Nathaniel's biological daughter."

Claire's breath caught.

"Then what was the birth certificate?"

"A decoy."

Nathaniel looked furious.

Samuel continued.

"William created two records."

"Why?"

"Because someone was searching for proof that the Holloway line included a daughter."

Claire looked at Nathaniel.

"Julian."

Nathaniel nodded.

Slowly.

"My brother believed Dad's trust amendment would destroy the old succession structure. When he learned you were pregnant with a girl, he threatened to expose every illegal financial structure our father had used to stabilize the company."

Claire swallowed.

"And your solution was to hide Lucy."

"At first."

"At first?"

Nathaniel looked away.

"Then Julian disappeared."

Samuel corrected him.

"William made Julian disappear."

Nobody spoke.

Claire stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"He gave him money, a new identity, and one condition: never return."

Nathaniel's laugh was bitter.

"And apparently that worked brilliantly."

Ethan examined the note.

"If Julian came back, why take Lucy?"

Samuel looked at Nathaniel.

"Because she controls something."

Claire was tired of secrets.

"What?"

"The final trust."

Nathaniel turned sharply.

Samuel continued.

"William changed it again before he died."

Nathaniel whispered, "No."

"Yes."

Samuel looked at Lucy's rabbit in Claire's arms.

"When Lucy turns seven, controlling shares shift."

"To who?"

"To all four children equally."

Ethan exhaled.

"So Dad loses control."

Samuel nodded.

"Unless Lucy is no longer recognized."

Claire finally understood the divorce timing.

Lucy would turn seven in six weeks.

Nathaniel filed now.

Reclassified Lucy.

Kept two sons at home.

Maintained voting control.

Claire turned toward him.

"You knew."

Nathaniel's silence condemned him.

"You knew all of this."

"I knew about the age trigger."

"And you still tried to erase her."

"I thought it was the only way to keep Julian from finding her."

"You could have protected her without destroying her place in this family."

Nathaniel's face tightened.

"You don't understand what Julian is capable of."

"Then tell me."

"He burned down one of our warehouses with two men inside."

Ethan went pale.

Nathaniel continued.

"He bribed investigators. He blackmailed our father. He sent threats to your obstetrician when you were pregnant."

Claire's stomach turned.

"You knew that?"

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"I thought fear would make you harder to protect."

Claire shook her head.

"No. Control made me easier for you to manage."

Nathaniel had no answer.

A security guard ran toward them.

"Sir."

Nathaniel turned.

"We found a vehicle two miles east."

Claire's heart jumped.

"Lucy?"

"No one inside."

They raced there.

A black sedan sat abandoned on the shoulder.

Rear door open.

No blood.

No sign of struggle.

On the back seat was Lucy's pink cardigan.

Claire grabbed it.

Underneath lay a phone.

It began ringing.

Nathaniel answered.

"Where is she?"

A man's voice came through speaker.

Calm.

Almost amused.

"Hello, little brother."

Nathaniel's face emptied.

Claire knew.

Julian.

"Put Lucy on."

"You'll see her soon."

"If you touch her—"

"Still threatening people before listening. Dad always loved that about you."

Claire stepped forward.

"This is Claire."

Silence.

Then Julian laughed softly.

"So you finally know I exist."

"Where is my daughter?"

"Safe."

"Let me hear her."

A pause.

Then Lucy's voice came through.

"Mommy?"

Claire nearly collapsed.

"I'm here, baby."

"Are you mad?"

"No. Never."

"The man said Daddy lied."

Claire looked at Nathaniel.

"What man?"

The call switched back.

Julian's voice returned.

"Midnight tomorrow. Old Holloway Foundry. Bring the original trust documents."

Nathaniel said, "No."

Julian laughed.

"Then perhaps Claire should ask why you burned the last copy."

Claire looked at Nathaniel.

He didn't deny it.

Julian continued.

"Oh, and Claire?"

"What?"

"Bring Ethan."

Nathaniel stepped toward the phone.

"Absolutely not."

Julian ignored him.

"He deserves to learn which Holloway son was actually chosen to inherit everything."

The call ended.

Ethan stared at his father.

"What does that mean?"

Nathaniel handed the phone to the guard.

"Nothing."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"That word has been doing a lot of work tonight."

Claire held Lucy's cardigan.

"We go to the foundry."

"No," Nathaniel said.

"Then I'll go without you."

"You don't know Julian."

"I know he has my child."

Samuel stepped forward.

"There may be another option."

Nathaniel looked at him.

"What?"

"Margaret."

Nathaniel's face hardened.

Samuel continued.

"If anyone knows where Julian is operating, she does."

Claire stared.

"Then take me to her."

Samuel checked his watch.

"Not tonight."

"Why?"

"Because she isn't in the country."

Claire's patience snapped.

"Then where is she?"

Samuel looked at Nathaniel.

"Closer than he thinks."

Headlights appeared down the private road.

A long black car approached without security clearance.

Nathaniel's guards raised their hands.

The car stopped.

The rear door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She was in her seventies.

Silver-haired.

Straight-backed.

Alive.

Nathaniel stopped breathing.

"Mother."

Margaret Holloway looked at her son for the first time in eleven years.

Then she turned to Claire.

"I came because you took the right child."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

Margaret opened the car door wider.

Someone else sat inside.

Claire stepped closer.

The person leaned forward into the light.

Ethan whispered, "Who is that?"

Nathaniel staggered back.

Because sitting beside his supposedly dead mother was a man with Nathaniel's eyes.

May you like

Julian Holloway smiled.

And said, "Now we can finally tell Claire which brother started this war."
