Chapter 11 - The Last Secret Beneath Blackwood Manor

They followed the sound.

Down.

Below the basement.

Below Room Seven.

A hidden staircase led into a chamber no one had mentioned.

Victor opened the door.

His father was there.

Alive.

Bound to a chair.

Emma's heart stopped.

Victor rushed forward.

His father looked at him.

“I knew you'd come.”

Victor cut the ropes.

“Who did this?”

His father looked at Emma.

“Thomas.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Victor stared.

“You knew he had him?”

Sarah shook her head.

“I thought he was safe.”

His father smiled weakly.

“No one was safe.”

He pointed toward the wall.

A giant metal vault stood there.

“The evidence Thomas couldn't destroy.”

Victor approached.

“What is it?”

“Everything.”

He entered a code.

The vault opened.

Inside were files.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Names.

And one sealed envelope.

Emma recognized the handwriting.

Her mother's.

She opened it.

Emma, if you are reading this, then I failed to keep the past buried.

Her hands shook.

You were never merely a witness.

She read on.

You were the reason Eleanor survived.

Emma looked up.

“What?”

Eleanor stepped closer.

“When you were six, Thomas came to kill me.”

Emma remembered.

The room.

The chair.

The scream.

Thomas raising a gun.

Her father grabbing him.

Eleanor falling.

But another memory surfaced.

Emma had crawled beneath the table.

She had seen Thomas drop something.

A silver ring.

She had picked it up.

Then hidden it inside her bracelet.

The ring was the missing evidence.

Emma opened the bracelet.

The tiny compartment held the ring.

Thomas's ring.

His fingerprints were preserved inside the old evidence system.

Victor stared.

“That proves it.”

His father nodded.

“Thomas killed the wrong person.”

Emma looked confused.

“Who?”

“Your mother was supposed to die that night.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“But Eleanor took her place.”

Emma looked at Eleanor.

“You saved my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And she saved you.”

“Yes.”

The entire chain finally made sense.

The chair.

The recordings.

The ledger.

The bracelet.

The memories.

None of it had been random.

Thomas had spent twelve years trying to destroy evidence that could never be completely erased.

Because four people had protected it.

Eleanor.

Sarah.

Victor's father.

And Emma.

A siren sounded outside.

Police had arrived.

Thomas tried to escape through the west corridor.

Victor stopped him.

Thomas raised his weapon.

Victor stood still.

“You lost.”

Thomas smiled.

“You think this ends with me?”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

He glanced at Emma.

“It ends with all of us telling the truth.”

Thomas was arrested.

His network collapsed within weeks.

The ledger became evidence.

The recordings were authenticated.

The missing accounts were recovered.

Victor's family business was investigated and restructured.

And Blackwood Manor changed forever.

But Emma still had one thing left to do.

She returned to the dining hall.

The chair waited beneath the chandelier.

She placed both hands on it.

Then she sat.

For twelve years, nobody had dared.

Emma closed her eyes.

She wasn't afraid anymore.

Victor entered behind her.

“You sure?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

He sat beside her.

For the first time, the chair was no longer a symbol of death.

It was simply a chair.

Then Eleanor entered.

She held an old photograph.

“This belongs to you.”

Emma took it.

It showed her family together.

Her mother.

Her father.

Eleanor.

Victor.

And Emma.

She smiled.

Until she noticed one final detail.

Someone had written a sentence on the back.

THE FIRST CHAIR WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

Emma looked up.

Eleanor's expression had changed.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor didn't answer.

May you like

She looked toward the mansion's oldest hallway.

And somewhere in the darkness, another lock clicked open.
