Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Never Gone

The lights went out.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The wedding hall that had been filled with music, laughter, and celebration became completely silent.

I could hear people breathing.

I could hear someone drop a glass.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then I heard my name.

"Claire."

A voice behind me.

A voice I had spent eight years trying to remember.

My entire body froze.

I knew that voice.

Not because I heard it recently.

Because I had spent years replaying it in my dreams.

The way he used to call my name when he wanted to make sure I was okay.

The way he said it when we were kids and I was afraid of thunderstorms.

The way he said it the night before everything changed.

"No..."

The word escaped my mouth.

I turned slowly.

The emergency lights flickered on.

And standing near the back entrance of the wedding hall was a man I had buried in my heart eight years ago.

My brother.

Ethan.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

Nobody spoke.

Not my father.

Not my mother.

Not Emily.

Nobody.

I stared at him, waiting for my mind to correct itself.

For reality to return.

But it didn't.

Ethan took one step forward.

His eyes filled with emotion.

"Claire."

That was all it took.

The tears I had refused to shed all night finally came.

I didn't run to him.

I couldn't.

My body didn't know how to react.

Because the person standing in front of me was both the greatest miracle and the deepest betrayal I had ever experienced.

"You were alive."

My voice cracked.

Ethan looked down.

"I was."

The answer hurt.

Not because he was alive.

Because he had known.

He had known I was suffering.

He had known I believed he was gone.

And he stayed away.

I stepped closer.

"Why?"

One word.

Eight years of pain inside it.

"Why did you let me think you were dead?"

Ethan looked at our parents.

Then back at me.

"Because I thought if you knew the truth, you would become a target too."

I looked at my father.

The man who had spent years telling me he lost his son.

The man who had stood in front of everyone and tried to give away my car.

The man who had built an entire life around secrets.

"A target for what?"

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan walked toward us.

Every person in the room moved away from him.

Like they were afraid.

That was when I understood.

This wasn't just a family problem.

This was something much bigger.

Ethan stopped beside me.

"You shouldn't have found out this way."

I laughed bitterly.

"How should I have found out?"

He looked at the torn dress.

The broken necklace.

The shocked guests.

His expression changed.

"What happened to you?"

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

His eyes moved toward Emily.

Then my father.

And something dark appeared on his face.

"What did they do?"

Emily immediately stepped forward.

"Don't act like you know everything."

Ethan looked at her.

And she stopped talking.

There was something in his eyes.

Something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Disappointment.

"You haven't changed."

Emily crossed her arms.

"You disappeared."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"I disappeared because I was trying to protect this family."

She laughed.

"Protect us?"

She looked around.

"You ruined everything."

I almost couldn't believe it.

Even now.

Even with Ethan standing there alive.

Emily was still worried about the wedding.

Not the lies.

Not the pain.

The wedding.

Ethan ignored her.

He looked at Daniel.

"You brought the files?"

Daniel nodded.

"Everything."

My father suddenly stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone turned.

His voice was different.

Desperate.

"Not here."

Ethan looked at him.

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

The words hit the room.

My father looked like he had aged ten years.

"What happened?" I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

"I found evidence."

"What evidence?"

He took a breath.

"Evidence that someone inside the company was stealing money."

My father closed his eyes.

There it was.

Confirmation.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a mistake.

A crime.

"But why fake your death?"

Ethan looked at the floor.

"Because I discovered who was behind it."

The room became silent again.

I looked at my father.

But Ethan wasn't looking at him.

He was looking somewhere else.

At someone behind us.

I followed his eyes.

Emily.

My sister.

My stomach tightened.

"No."

Emily shook her head immediately.

"No, don't look at me."

Ethan didn't move.

"I didn't say anything."

"You don't have to."

Her face changed.

Fear replaced anger.

For the first time in my life, I saw Emily afraid.

"What does she have to do with this?" I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then my father spoke.

"Claire, please leave this alone."

I turned toward him.

"Leave it alone?"

My voice became louder.

"You lied about my brother."

"You lied about my car."

"You let your daughter attack me."

"And now you want me to leave it alone?"

My father looked broken.

"I was trying to protect everyone."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

My father looked at him.

"I was trying to protect you."

Ethan's expression softened slightly.

"That's what you told yourself."

The tension between them was impossible to ignore.

They weren't just arguing.

They were carrying years of secrets.

Daniel opened the folder again.

"There is something Claire needs to see."

He pulled out a photograph.

A picture of a man sitting at a desk.

I looked at it.

Then I stopped breathing.

Because I recognized the room.

It was my father's office.

The man in the picture wasn't my father.

It was someone else.

Someone I had seen before.

At family gatherings.

At company events.

Someone my father trusted.

"Who is that?"

Ethan looked at me.

"The person who helped destroy our family."

I stared at the picture.

"Why?"

"Because he knew what your father built."

I looked at my father.

"And what did he build?"

Nobody answered.

Ethan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

It was old.

Worn.

Like it had been carried for years.

"I was supposed to give this to you when I came back."

My hands shook as I took it.

"My brother wrote this?"

Ethan nodded.

"No."

My heart dropped.

"Then who?"

Ethan looked at our parents.

"Someone who knew everything."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence was written.

My blood went cold when I read it.

Because the handwriting wasn't Ethan's.

It wasn't my father's.

It wasn't anyone I recognized.

But the message was addressed directly to me.

Claire,

If you are reading this, it means they failed to stop the truth.

I looked up.

"Who wrote this?"

Nobody answered.

Then my father's phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His face turned completely white.

Because the caller was the same person whose handwriting was on the page.

May you like

And my father whispered:

"He was never supposed to contact you."
