Chapter 5 - The Mission That Never Ended

The archive door opened.

Slowly.

Nobody breathed.

The sound of the lock releasing echoed through the hidden room.

The security officers raised their flashlights.

Marcus stepped in front of me.

Again.

Like he had done years ago.

Like he was still my commander.

"Stay behind me."

I looked at him.

"You don't even know who's there."

His eyes stayed on the doorway.

"Exactly."

The door moved another inch.

Then stopped.

A shadow appeared.

A person was standing on the other side.

Watching us.

Waiting.

Daniel whispered:

"No..."

I turned toward him.

He looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

"You know who that is."

Daniel didn't answer.

The shadow moved.

A hand reached forward.

The person pushed the door open completely.

And I saw his face.

For a second, my mind refused to accept it.

Because the man standing there belonged to a memory.

Not reality.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

The same eyes.

The same scar.

The same voice.

"Amelia."

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

The voice from the video.

The man everyone told me was dead.

The man whose name had disappeared from every official record.

Ethan Cole.

My former partner.

My closest friend.

The man who vanished the same night I did.

Marcus lowered his weapon.

"Ethan."

Ethan looked at him.

"You kept her away too long."

Marcus didn't respond.

I stared at Ethan.

"You were alive."

He looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

That was all he said.

Sorry.

After twelve years.

After everyone believed he was gone.

After I spent years wondering what happened.

"You let me think you were dead."

His expression changed.

"I had to."

"No."

My voice became louder.

"You chose to."

The room became silent.

Ethan looked down.

And for the first time, I saw guilt.

Not fear.

Not regret.

Guilt.

"You don't understand what happened that night."

I stepped closer.

"Then explain."

He looked toward Marcus.

Marcus shook his head slightly.

A warning.

But Ethan ignored him.

"Daniel wasn't the only person who lied to you."

I froze.

Daniel looked away.

The words hit everyone.

Especially me.

"Who else?"

Ethan looked at the card in my hand.

The old identification card.

"Where did you find that?"

I held it up.

"Inside this room."

His face changed.

"Then they know."

Marcus immediately looked toward the hallway.

"Who?"

Ethan didn't answer.

He walked inside and closed the archive door.

Locked it.

The action made everyone nervous.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Buying us time."

"For what?"

He looked at me.

"For the people who are coming."

The lights flickered.

Again.

The computer screen turned on.

The message changed.

"LEVEL SEVEN ACCESS CONFIRMED."

Ethan stared at it.

"No."

Marcus looked at him.

"You knew about Level Seven."

Ethan remained silent.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Tell me."

The command in his voice returned.

The same voice he used during missions.

Ethan looked at him.

"Level Seven was never an archive."

"Then what was it?"

Ethan looked at me.

"It was an emergency protocol."

I frowned.

"For what?"

"For when someone inside the military became compromised."

Nobody spoke.

I felt my chest tighten.

"Someone inside?"

Ethan nodded.

"Someone powerful."

Marcus looked at the files.

"The mission..."

Ethan interrupted.

"Wasn't a mission."

The room became still.

"What do you mean?"

Ethan looked at me.

"The operation twelve years ago wasn't about gathering information."

My heartbeat increased.

"Then what was it about?"

He hesitated.

"Finding the person who was selling military secrets."

Daniel suddenly moved.

Everyone noticed.

Marcus turned immediately.

"Don't."

Daniel stopped.

I looked at him.

"You knew."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I knew enough."

"Enough to erase my name?"

"No."

"Enough to lie to me for twelve years?"

Silence.

Daniel looked at me.

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost couldn't believe it.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I pointed at the room.

"Everyone says they were protecting me."

My voice shook.

"But nobody protected me from the truth."

Nobody answered.

Ethan walked toward the table.

He picked up the folder.

"There is something you need to see."

He opened it.

Inside were mission photographs.

Reports.

Audio transcripts.

And one page with a red stamp.

CLASSIFIED.

Marcus looked at it.

"That file was destroyed."

Ethan nodded.

"Officially."

He handed it to me.

I read the first line.

"Operation Silent Horizon."

My hands froze.

Because I remembered.

Not the details.

Not everything.

Just pieces.

A dark building.

A voice telling me to run.

A flash.

Then waking up in a hospital.

Ethan watched my reaction.

"You remember."

"I remember fragments."

"That's because someone removed part of your memory."

I looked up.

"What?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

Like he already knew.

I turned toward him.

"You knew."

He didn't deny it.

"I suspected."

The room felt smaller.

"You knew I lost memories?"

Marcus looked away.

"Yes."

"And you never told me?"

"I was trying to find the person responsible."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

"You all made decisions about my life."

Nobody spoke.

"You decided what I could know."

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

"You decided what I deserved."

Daniel looked ashamed.

But it was too late.

Ethan placed another document on the table.

"This is why your name was removed."

I looked down.

The document was a transfer order.

A fake one.

It showed that I had resigned.

But underneath the fake signature was another page.

The real report.

It said:

"Captain Amelia Carter remained active until final confirmation."

Final confirmation.

I looked at Ethan.

"Final confirmation of what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Whether you survived."

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"They thought I was dead?"

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

His face became serious.

"Because someone needed the world to believe you were gone."

A sound came from outside.

A loud impact.

Everyone turned.

Someone was trying to open the archive door.

Marcus immediately moved toward it.

"They found us."

The handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Ethan grabbed the folder.

"Amelia, listen to me."

I looked at him.

"The person who erased your identity..."

The handle moved again.

"...is not the person you think."

The door shook.

Marcus prepared himself.

Daniel backed away.

The lock began turning.

Then the archive lights suddenly changed.

A single message appeared on the computer screen.

Not from the old system.

A new message.

A live message.

It displayed only two words.

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because it was signed with my own name.

"Open Door."
