Chapter 4 - The Secret Room Beneath My Name

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

The sound echoed through the hidden room beneath the military museum, louder than it should have been.

It wasn't a normal phone.

It was an old black desk phone.

The kind used decades ago.

The kind that belonged in a forgotten office, not inside a secret archive.

Marcus stared at it.

His expression told me one thing.

He knew that phone existed.

But he didn't expect it to ring.

"Who would have this number?" I asked.

Marcus didn't answer.

The phone rang again.

Daniel looked toward the exit.

For a moment, I thought he would run.

But he didn't.

He just stood there.

Watching.

Waiting.

That scared me more.

Because Daniel was not confused.

He was someone who knew something was coming.

Marcus slowly walked toward the desk.

"Don't."

The word came from Daniel.

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately looked away.

"I mean..."

He stopped.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"You know what's on that phone."

Daniel remained silent.

That was enough.

Marcus picked up the receiver.

"Hello?"

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But Marcus's face changed.

The color disappeared.

His hand tightened around the phone.

"That's impossible."

A pause.

Then:

"No. She is here."

My heart stopped.

She.

Not "they."

Not "someone."

She.

Me.

Marcus looked directly at me.

The person on the phone had asked about me.

After twelve years.

After all the lies.

After everyone believed I was gone.

Someone was still waiting.

Marcus lowered the phone slowly.

"Who was it?" I asked.

He didn't respond.

"General."

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then back to me.

"It was a secure line."

"From where?"

Marcus hesitated.

"The command center."

The room became silent.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Because the command center had been shut down years ago.

Officially.

Destroyed.

No one should have been able to call from there.

"That's not possible," I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

"That's exactly what I said."

Behind us, Daniel laughed quietly.

Everyone turned.

It wasn't a confident laugh.

It was nervous.

"You people are really doing this?"

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

He shook his head.

"You found an old room. You found an old video. Now you think you uncovered some huge conspiracy."

Marcus stepped toward him.

"Then explain why you knew about the hidden archive."

Daniel didn't answer.

"Explain why you knew the room existed."

Still nothing.

"Explain why you reacted when the phone rang."

Daniel looked angry now.

Not scared.

Angry.

"You don't know what you're dealing with."

The words came out before he could stop them.

I noticed.

Marcus noticed.

Everyone noticed.

I stepped closer.

"What am I dealing with, Daniel?"

He looked at me.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to hold my hand.

The man who knew every fear I had.

Then it disappeared.

And I saw someone else.

Someone who had been hiding behind that face.

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost laughed.

"Protect me?"

"You have no idea what happened."

"Then tell me."

Silence.

"Tell me why my name was erased."

Daniel looked down.

"Because you weren't supposed to come back."

The room froze.

Marcus immediately reached for his radio.

"Security."

Daniel stepped backward.

"No."

The panic in his voice was real now.

"Wait."

I stared at him.

"You knew."

He didn't deny it.

Not anymore.

"I knew something was going to happen."

"What something?"

He looked at the hidden room.

"The same thing that happened twelve years ago."

My breathing slowed.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The missing records.

The erased name.

The fake story about me leaving.

The mysterious video.

The warning.

Someone had not wanted me gone.

Someone had wanted me forgotten.

Marcus opened the folder from the table.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Reports.

And a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

But underneath my name was another sentence.

"Only open when Amelia remembers."

I stared at it.

"Remember what?"

Marcus looked away.

"I don't know."

That answer hurt.

Because Marcus was the person who always knew.

The person who had guided me.

The person who had trained me to trust my instincts.

And now he looked afraid.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

I turned it over.

And froze.

It was me.

Twelve years earlier.

Standing in front of a military facility.

But beside me was someone else.

A man.

The same man from the video.

The one everyone said was dead.

On the back of the photograph was handwriting.

His handwriting.

"Amelia, if you are seeing this, I failed."

My fingers tightened around the picture.

Marcus looked at it.

His face changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"It was inside the envelope."

He stepped closer.

Then he stopped.

Because he saw the next line.

The sentence written below.

"He is not the person who betrayed you."

Marcus looked at me.

"What?"

I turned the photograph over.

There was more.

Three names.

One crossed out.

Two remaining.

The first name was mine.

The second was Marcus Hale.

The third...

I couldn't breathe.

Because I knew the third name.

Daniel.

My husband.

My hands shook.

Marcus saw it.

He didn't say anything.

He didn't need to.

The silence said enough.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

And for the first time, he looked completely defeated.

"You weren't supposed to find that."

The words came softly.

I looked at him.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

"Why was your name there?"

He closed his eyes.

Like he was trying to decide something.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Everything became dark.

Someone screamed outside the archive.

The emergency lights turned on seconds later.

Red.

Flashing.

Marcus immediately moved.

"Everyone stay where you are."

The security officers reached for their radios.

No signal.

Marcus checked his phone.

Nothing.

The hidden room had become isolated.

Then the computer screen turned back on.

The same old monitor.

The same system.

But this time, there was no video.

There was a message.

One sentence.

"Amelia Carter has accessed Level Seven."

Marcus went completely still.

I looked at him.

"What is Level Seven?"

He didn't answer.

Because he was staring at the wall.

At the symbol from the video.

The one I didn't recognize.

Now it was glowing.

A hidden panel opened beside the desk.

A small drawer moved outward.

Inside was a military identification card.

Old.

Damaged.

Covered in scratches.

Marcus picked it up.

Then dropped it.

I had never seen him afraid like that.

"What is it?"

He looked at me.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"Your original identity card."

I frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

Marcus looked at the card again.

"It shouldn't exist."

"Why?"

He slowly turned it over.

On the back was a date.

A date from twelve years ago.

The date I disappeared.

And underneath it were four words.

"Mission Never Ended."

Before anyone could speak, the archive door behind us unlocked.

May you like

Slowly.

Someone was standing outside.
