Chapter 6 - The Truth Evelyn Buried For Seven Years

I stared at the envelope in Lily's hands.

The words written across the front were simple.

For Evelyn.

But nothing about that envelope felt simple.

Not anymore.

Not after the basement.

Not after the photographs.

Not after learning that Brandon had spent years collecting proof of things I never knew existed.

My daughter stood in the hallway, holding something that belonged to a mystery she was never supposed to carry.

I walked toward her slowly.

"Lily."

She looked at me.

"Is that the envelope Daddy gave you?"

She nodded.

"He told me to keep it safe."

My heart tightened.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?"

Her eyes lowered.

"Because he told me only to give it to Grandma when she forgot something."

I looked at the envelope.

Then at my daughter.

"What did he say she forgot?"

Lily was quiet for a moment.

Then she answered.

"He said she forgot that people can get hurt."

I closed my eyes.

Because that sounded exactly like Brandon.

He never wanted revenge.

He wanted people to understand.

But the more I uncovered, the more I realized this wasn't just about hurt feelings.

This was about a secret.

A secret big enough that my husband had prepared his seven-year-old daughter for the day it came out.

I took the envelope gently.

"Lily, go upstairs."

She didn't move.

"Mommy."

I looked at her.

"Yes?"

"Is Grandma bad?"

The question broke something inside me.

Because there was no easy answer.

Evelyn had hurt her.

That was true.

But Brandon's notes suggested something more complicated.

Something darker.

Something involving the day Lily was born.

I knelt down.

"I don't know yet."

Lily looked surprised.

I had always given her answers.

But this time, honesty mattered more than comfort.

"And I'm going to find out."

She nodded.

Then she hugged me.

A small hug.

The kind only a child could give.

The kind that reminded me exactly why I couldn't stop.

After she went upstairs, I returned to the living room.

Evelyn was still there.

Waiting.

She looked at the envelope.

And for the first time, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had spent years carrying something too heavy.

"You found it."

Her voice was quiet.

I stared at her.

"You knew where it was."

She didn't answer.

"You knew Brandon hid things from me."

Another silence.

"You knew about the basement."

Her eyes filled slightly.

"Claire..."

"No."

I held up the envelope.

"Not this time."

My voice shook.

"Not another explanation that makes me feel like I'm overreacting."

She looked down.

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost laughed.

"Protect me?"

I placed the envelope on the table.

"By making my daughter feel unwanted?"

Her face changed.

Pain crossed her expression.

And for one second, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered Lily holding that candle.

I remembered her asking if she had done something wrong.

"What is in this envelope?"

Evelyn looked at it.

Then whispered:

"The truth."

Those words made the room colder.

"About what?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she sat down.

"About Lily."

My stomach tightened.

I hated that sentence.

Because every time someone said Lily's name, it felt like there was another secret attached to it.

"What happened the day she was born?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"You were told she was born early."

I nodded slowly.

"She was."

"No."

The answer came so softly that I almost missed it.

"No?"

Evelyn looked away.

"That wasn't the whole truth."

My hands curled into fists.

"Then tell me the whole truth."

She took a deep breath.

"When Lily was born, Brandon and I received a phone call."

"From who?"

She hesitated.

"Someone from the hospital."

"Why?"

Her eyes moved toward the stairs.

Toward where Lily was.

"Because there was a problem with the records."

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"What problem?"

Evelyn looked at the envelope.

"The hospital paperwork had been changed."

I stared at her.

"Changed by who?"

She didn't answer.

And suddenly I understood.

The answer was somewhere in that envelope.

I opened it.

Inside was another photograph.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

But this time, there were two people standing beside the bed.

Brandon.

And a woman I had never seen before.

My breath caught.

Because Brandon was holding a baby.

And the woman beside him was crying.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

She deserved to know her mother.

I looked at Evelyn.

"What does this mean?"

Her face went pale.

"I don't know."

I slammed the photo onto the table.

"Don't lie to me."

She flinched.

And that told me everything.

"You know exactly what this means."

She whispered:

"I know what Brandon believed."

"Believed?"

I looked at her.

"Was he wrong?"

Evelyn didn't respond.

That silence was enough.

I grabbed the remaining papers from the envelope.

The first page was a hospital document.

The second was a legal form.

The third was a letter.

Not from Brandon.

From someone named Rachel.

I read the first line.

Dear Brandon, if you are reading this, then Evelyn failed to keep her promise.

I stopped.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"No."

I looked up.

"Who is Rachel?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"She was..."

She stopped.

I waited.

Finally, she said:

"She was Lily's mother."

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

"What did you just say?"

Evelyn looked broken.

"Lily's birth mother."

I shook my head.

"No."

The word came out automatically.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

"I am her mother."

Evelyn looked at me.

"You are."

Her answer confused me.

"What does that mean?"

She reached for the letter.

But I pulled it away.

"No."

I looked at the pages.

"I read it."

My hands trembled as I unfolded Rachel's letter.

The first paragraph explained everything.

Rachel was Brandon's childhood friend.

She had a daughter.

She had been unable to raise her because of a dangerous situation involving someone close to her.

Brandon and I had never known.

Because the adoption process had been hidden from me.

Hidden.

That word repeated in my mind.

Then I reached the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

Brandon, I know you promised Claire she would never learn the truth this way, but Evelyn cannot keep controlling Lily's life.

I looked at Evelyn.

"You knew."

She cried quietly.

"I knew."

"About Rachel?"

"Yes."

"About the adoption?"

She nodded.

I felt betrayed.

Not because Lily wasn't biologically mine.

She was my daughter in every way that mattered.

But because everyone had made decisions about my life without me.

Brandon.

Evelyn.

Rachel.

Everyone.

Except me.

"Why?"

My voice broke.

"Why would you hide this from me?"

Evelyn looked at the floor.

"Because Rachel disappeared."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"After Lily was born, Rachel was supposed to come back."

She swallowed.

"But she never did."

A terrible thought entered my mind.

"What happened to her?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because her expression told me.

Something had happened.

Something everyone had been hiding.

I looked at the final page.

There was one sentence written by Brandon.

Only one.

Claire, if you ever find this, don't trust anyone who tells you Rachel left willingly.

I read it twice.

Then I heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A door opening.

I looked toward the staircase.

"Lily?"

No answer.

I moved quickly.

The hallway was empty.

But my daughter's bedroom door was open.

I knew I had closed it.

I walked closer.

Slowly.

Inside the room, everything was still.

Except for one thing.

The window was open.

And on Lily's bed was a note.

A note I knew hadn't been there before.

I picked it up.

Three words were written on it.

I found Rachel.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Claire... you need to know what Brandon discovered before Evelyn does."

I froze.

Because the voice on the other end was one I had never heard before.

But then the woman said something that made me drop the phone.

May you like

"Your daughter is not the only child Evelyn has been hiding."

And before I could respond, the line went dead.
