Chapter 5 - The Woman In Brandon's Secret

The photograph on my phone showed a woman standing inside my basement.

But the woman in the picture wasn't a stranger.

She was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone I had invited into my home countless times.

I stared at the image until my eyes hurt.

The woman standing beside my locked basement door was Evelyn.

My mother-in-law.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because the woman who had spent years telling me she barely understood technology had somehow taken photographs inside my basement.

The woman who claimed she didn't know anything about Brandon's investigation was standing exactly where he had been hiding his secrets.

The woman who had looked shocked when Lily found the envelope already knew what was inside.

I felt sick.

"Lily."

My daughter was sitting on the couch.

She looked up immediately.

"Yes, Mommy?"

I quickly locked my phone screen.

Not because I wanted to hide the truth from her.

Because she had already carried too much.

"Go to your room for a minute, okay?"

She looked at my face.

She was smart enough to know something was wrong.

"Are you mad?"

That question hurt.

Because she thought my emotions were connected to her.

Like every adult problem around her might somehow be her fault.

I walked over and knelt in front of her.

"No, sweetheart."

I held her hands.

"None of this is because of you."

She nodded slowly.

Then she whispered:

"Daddy knew this would happen."

I froze.

"What do you mean?"

Lily looked toward the basement stairs.

"Daddy told me that if Grandma ever got scared, I needed to remember that she wasn't scared of me."

My heart stopped.

"What was she scared of?"

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know."

Then she looked at the folded paper in her hand.

"But Daddy said you would find out."

I didn't know whether those words gave me comfort or terrified me.

Because Brandon wasn't leaving me memories.

He was leaving me instructions.

Like he knew something would happen.

Like he knew I would eventually stand in this exact moment.

I waited until Lily went upstairs.

Then I returned to the basement.

I needed answers.

The room felt different now.

Before, it felt like a place where Brandon had hidden the truth.

Now it felt like a place where someone had been trying to hide the truth from me.

I picked up the photograph again.

Evelyn standing by the basement door.

The date was printed in the corner.

Three months before Brandon died.

I looked at the date again.

Three months.

Three months before I lost my husband.

Three months before everyone told me his death was an accident.

My fingers trembled.

I opened another folder.

Inside were more pictures.

Evelyn.

Always Evelyn.

Standing outside my house.

Walking through my backyard.

Looking through documents.

The photographs weren't random.

They were evidence.

Brandon had been watching her.

But why?

Then I found a recording device.

A small black recorder.

I pressed the button.

At first, there was only static.

Then I heard Brandon's voice.

My knees almost gave out.

"Mom doesn't know that I found the files."

I covered my mouth.

Hearing him again was painful.

His voice.

His breathing.

The sound of him sitting somewhere, recording a message he never expected me to hear.

"I need to be careful."

A pause.

"Claire still trusts her."

I closed my eyes.

Because that was true.

I had trusted Evelyn.

Even after everything.

Even after the comments.

Even after the way she treated Lily.

A new voice appeared.

Evelyn.

"You don't understand what you're doing, Brandon."

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

"You think you're protecting them, but you're destroying this family."

Brandon answered.

"No. I'm exposing what you did."

A long silence.

Then Evelyn spoke.

"You really think Claire will believe you?"

Brandon's voice became lower.

"She will when she sees the proof."

The recording ended.

I stood there frozen.

Proof.

That was the word Brandon kept using.

Proof.

I searched through the boxes faster.

Papers.

Photos.

Notes.

Then I found a folder with my name.

Not Lily's.

Mine.

Inside was a document.

The first page made my hands go cold.

It was a legal document.

A custody agreement.

But it wasn't about Lily.

It was about me.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then I stopped.

Because my name was written beside a sentence that made no sense.

"Temporary guardianship transfer."

I turned the page.

There were signatures.

One belonged to Evelyn.

The other belonged to someone I didn't recognize.

But the date was clear.

The day after Lily was born.

My stomach twisted.

Why would Evelyn have documents about my daughter from the day she was born?

Why would she have anything involving custody?

I kept searching.

At the bottom of the folder was a handwritten note from Brandon.

"Claire, if you're reading this, it means Mom finally forced you to look."

I sat down on the basement floor.

The tears came before I could stop them.

Because even after death, Brandon knew me.

He knew I would hesitate.

He knew I would make excuses.

He knew I would try to protect everyone before protecting myself.

The note continued.

"I need you to know something important."

My hands shook.

"Lily was never the problem."

I whispered:

"I know."

But the next line made my heart stop.

"The reason Mom rejected Lily was because she knew who Lily's biological father was."

I stared.

I read it again.

Then again.

Biological father.

The room started spinning.

Because Brandon was Lily's father.

At least, that's what I believed.

That's what I had always believed.

I looked at the date on the document.

The date from the day Lily was born.

Then I looked at the photographs.

Then the custody papers.

Pieces of my life suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

I immediately stood.

"Lily?"

No answer.

I ran up the stairs.

The living room was empty.

My daughter's toys were still on the floor.

Her coat was still on the chair.

But she was gone.

"Lily!"

No response.

Panic rushed through me.

I searched every room.

The kitchen.

The bathroom.

The hallway.

Nothing.

Then I saw the front door.

It was slightly open.

A cold feeling moved through my body.

I walked closer.

Outside, on the front porch, was a small envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just one word written on it.

"Lily."

I picked it up.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital photograph.

The kind families receive after a baby is born.

I looked at the picture.

A newborn baby wrapped in a blanket.

A nurse holding her.

And standing beside the hospital bed...

was Evelyn.

But that wasn't what made my blood run cold.

On the back of the photo was a sentence written in Brandon's handwriting.

Claire, I lied to you about one thing. Lily was never adopted.

I stopped breathing.

Then I heard my daughter's voice behind me.

"Mommy..."

I turned around.

Lily was standing at the end of the hallway.

Holding another envelope.

May you like

And written across the front were two words.

For Evelyn.
