Chapter 3 - The First Wife

Claire stared at Emily's photograph until the screen dimmed.

“She's alive.”

Mark leaned closer.

“Don't reply.”

“Why?”

“Because we don't know who's actually sending this.”

Another message arrived.

I CAN PROVE WHO I AM.

Attached was a photograph of a wedding certificate.

Ryan Cole.

Emily Harper.

Married nine years earlier.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ryan had not merely hidden a relationship.

He had erased a marriage.

The next attachment was worse.

A police report.

Emily had reported Ryan for assault six years earlier.

Charges were never filed.

The complainant withdrew cooperation.

Then she disappeared from public records.

“Why didn't this show up when Claire married him?” I asked.

“Because there was no conviction,” Mark said.

Claire looked sick.

“There should have been.”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn't there?”

Mark hesitated.

“Emily refused to testify.”

Claire looked back at the screen.

“I know why.”

We arranged to meet Emily through Bell.

Public location.

Police nearby.

No Ryan.

Emily entered the small interview room wearing jeans and a black jacket.

She was thirty-eight now.

She looked at Claire's sling and immediately began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire stared at her.

“For what?”

“For not stopping him before he found someone else.”

Claire crossed the room.

Instead of accusing her, she hugged her.

Emily broke down.

Her story was painfully familiar.

Ryan had been charming.

Attentive.

Protective.

Then protective became controlling.

Controlling became frightening.

He isolated her.

Controlled money.

Read her messages.

Tracked her location.

Then came the first shove.

Then apologies.

Flowers.

Promises.

Then another incident.

When Emily finally went to police, Patricia convinced her to withdraw.

“His mother?”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“She always cleaned up after him.”

Patricia had called Emily unstable.

She contacted Emily's employer.

She threatened to expose private medical information.

She convinced relatives that Emily was lying.

Eventually Emily fled to another state.

She changed her name.

“Why contact Claire now?” I asked.

Emily looked at me.

“Because I saw the hospital flag.”

Mark straightened.

“How?”

Emily hesitated.

“I still know someone inside the system.”

That answer bothered him.

It bothered me too.

But Claire asked the only question that mattered.

“Did he break your bones?”

Emily looked at her sling.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The investigation moved quickly after that.

Emily agreed to cooperate.

Claire provided photographs and messages.

Bell obtained emergency protective orders.

Ryan was prohibited from contacting Claire.

For forty-eight hours, he obeyed.

Then Patricia started calling.

Claire blocked her.

Patricia emailed.

Claire ignored her.

Flowers arrived.

We threw them away.

A handwritten letter appeared in my mailbox.

Claire didn't open it.

Then Ryan changed tactics.

He claimed Claire had assaulted him.

His attorney filed papers suggesting she was emotionally unstable.

He produced photographs of scratches on his arm.

Claire laughed when Bell showed them.

“He got those when I tried to stop him from taking my phone.”

Bell nodded.

“That was my guess.”

But allegations created complications.

Ryan wanted the house.

The joint accounts.

The furniture.

Most importantly, he wanted silence.

His attorney proposed a private settlement.

Claire would receive money.

Ryan would withdraw his allegations.

Both parties would sign confidentiality agreements.

Claire read the offer once.

Then tore it in half.

“No.”

I had never been prouder.

But Ryan wasn't finished.

Three days later, my employer received an anonymous complaint accusing me of financial misconduct.

False.

My bank received fraudulent identity-verification requests.

Someone tried to open a credit account in my name.

Ryan had promised Claire he could destroy me.

He was trying.

Mark helped me freeze everything.

Then he discovered something strange.

Several fraudulent requests came from an IP address associated with Patricia's house.

Police obtained a warrant.

What they found changed the case.

Patricia had kept files.

Not just about me.

About Emily.

About Claire.

About former girlfriends Ryan had dated.

Addresses.

Employers.

Family members.

Medical information.

Copies of private messages.

She hadn't merely defended her son.

She had helped him control women.

When Patricia was brought in for questioning, she insisted everything was misunderstood.

Then investigators found a locked drawer.

Inside were three phones.

One belonged to Emily.

She had reported it stolen years earlier.

Another belonged to Claire.

The phone Ryan had taken after the argument.

The third phone belonged to someone nobody recognized.

Bell powered it on.

The lock screen showed a young woman.

Mark looked at Emily.

“Do you know her?”

Emily's face changed.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Rachel.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Who is Rachel?”

Emily swallowed.

“The woman Ryan dated before me.”

Silence.

“What happened to her?”

Emily shook her head.

“I thought she moved away.”

Bell looked at the phone.

“When?”

“About ten years ago.”

The phone contained hundreds of messages.

Most had been deleted.

Digital forensics recovered some.

Rachel had been afraid.

She had written to a friend about Ryan.

About Patricia.

About leaving.

Her final recovered message read:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, DON'T BELIEVE HIS MOTHER.

The case expanded.

What had begun with Claire's broken arm was becoming something much larger.

Then, one evening, Claire and I returned home to find my back door open.

Nothing appeared stolen.

Mark searched every room.

Then Claire called from upstairs.

“Mom.”

I ran.

She stood inside the guest bedroom.

Her secret evidence folder was lying on the bed.

Open.

Someone had gone through it.

On top was a photograph that hadn't been there before.

It showed Claire asleep in my house the previous night.

Taken through the bedroom window.

On the back, someone had written:

YOU SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED THE RULES.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed Patricia's name.

But when I answered, a man's voice whispered:

“Ask Claire what really happened the night she broke her arm.”
