THE CALL HE FORGOT TO END / Chapter 5 / 7

Chapter 5 - The Night Before Her Father Died

Evelyn watched the dead screen for several seconds.

“What was changed?”

Chloe shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Why did the recording stop?”

“I had to leave the room.”

Rebecca replayed the last ten seconds.

Malcolm’s medical file.

Changed the night before his stroke.

That was all.

Not proof of murder.

Not proof of poisoning.

Not proof Flynn had caused anything.

But it was enough to tear open a grief Evelyn had spent six years learning to carry.

Her father had collapsed at home.

Flynn had been there.

Evelyn had been at a charity dinner.

By the time she reached the hospital, Malcolm was unconscious.

Flynn told her he had found him beside the kitchen counter.

“He saved my father’s life,” Evelyn whispered.

Samuel looked at her.

“He told everyone that.”

“He called the ambulance.”

“Did you ever see the call log?”

“No.”

Rebecca interrupted.

“We cannot assume a crime. We follow evidence.”

Evelyn nodded.

But emotion had already moved beyond evidence.

The next morning, Flynn convened the emergency board meeting at ten.

At 9:57, Evelyn walked into Vance Global headquarters.

Every conversation stopped.

Employees pretended not to stare.

The forgotten video call had spread through the company overnight despite Flynn’s attempts to suppress it.

By now, hundreds of employees knew.

Some looked embarrassed for her.

Some sympathetic.

A few smiled subtly when she passed.

Evelyn understood those smiles.

Flynn had not been universally loved.

The boardroom doors opened.

Flynn sat at the head of the table.

Daniel sat beside him.

Twelve directors occupied the remaining seats.

Rebecca entered with Evelyn.

Flynn’s attorney stood.

“This is a closed board session.”

Evelyn placed the original trust certificate on the table.

“Then perhaps the controlling shareholder should attend.”

Silence.

Flynn’s face tightened.

One director leaned forward.

“What is that?”

Rebecca handed out copies.

Flynn said, “An obsolete document.”

Rebecca smiled.

“Then you won’t mind us discussing it.”

Daniel whispered something to Flynn.

Evelyn took the empty chair opposite her husband.

Flynn stared at her.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“That sentence has become less persuasive lately.”

The meeting began.

Flynn spoke first.

He presented financial irregularities.

Forty-eight million dollars.

Shell companies.

Forged-looking authorization forms carrying Evelyn’s name.

Then he delivered the accusation.

“We have reason to believe my wife diverted company assets through entities she controlled.”

Several directors reacted immediately.

Evelyn remained still.

Flynn continued.

“This is obviously painful personally, but my duty is to shareholders.”

Evelyn almost admired the performance.

He sounded heartbroken.

Responsible.

Reluctant.

Like a man forced to expose his unstable wife.

When he finished, Evelyn asked one question.

“Who discovered these transfers?”

Daniel answered.

“My department.”

“Your department?”

“Yes.”

“And you authenticated my signatures?”

“We had forensic review.”

“Wonderful.”

She looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca connected a laptop to the boardroom screen.

Video appeared.

Daniel stood in Flynn’s office.

“If Evelyn reaches the anniversary with those voting rights intact, we lose everything.”

Every face turned toward Flynn.

Then his recorded voice:

“Then make sure she files first.”

The room went silent.

Flynn did not move.

Daniel did.

He stood.

“That recording is illegally obtained.”

Rebecca replied, “Interesting that authenticity concerns you less than admissibility.”

Flynn’s attorney leaned toward him.

The video continued.

References to forged documents.

Transfers.

The staged affair.

The necklace.

The forgotten video call.

One director stared at Flynn.

“You intentionally exposed your affair to manipulate a divorce filing?”

Flynn said nothing.

Another director whispered, “Jesus Christ.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Would you like to explain my signatures now?”

Daniel pushed back from the table.

“This meeting is over.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “It just became useful.”

Security entered.

But not for Evelyn.

Two federal investigators followed them.

Rebecca had contacted authorities before dawn.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Flynn remained frighteningly calm.

An investigator approached.

“Mr. Crowe, we’d like you to come with us voluntarily.”

Daniel looked at Flynn.

Flynn did not look back.

Something in Daniel broke.

“You said this couldn’t happen.”

Flynn stared at the table.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You said she’d never find the ledger.”

Board members erupted.

Flynn’s attorney grabbed his arm.

“Do not speak.”

Daniel pointed at Flynn.

“He planned everything.”

“Daniel,” the attorney warned.

“He used me.”

Flynn finally looked up.

“Stop talking.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“You told me Malcolm would never wake up.”

The room went dead silent.

Evelyn felt her body turn cold.

Flynn stood.

“Daniel.”

“You said the dose would look natural.”

Rebecca grabbed Evelyn’s hand beneath the table.

The investigators moved immediately.

One said, “Mr. Crowe, stop speaking.”

But Daniel had already crossed the line.

“He was supposed to sleep. That’s what you told me.”

Flynn lunged across the table.

Security restrained him.

The boardroom exploded into shouting.

Evelyn heard almost none of it.

Dose.

Her father.

Sleep.

She stared at Flynn.

He stared back.

For the first time in fifteen years, she saw no charm.

No apology.

No husband.

Only fear.

Daniel was taken into custody.

Flynn was detained for questioning.

Within hours, federal warrants were executed at Vance Global.

Trading in company shares was temporarily halted.

News crews surrounded headquarters.

Evelyn avoided all of them.

She went to the hospital where Malcolm had died.

Rebecca arranged access to archived records through investigators.

The files showed medication administered during Malcolm’s final twenty-four hours.

One sedative did not match the original physician order.

The dosage had been manually amended.

Authorization initials belonged to a nurse named Teresa Hale.

Teresa had resigned two days after Malcolm’s death.

Samuel located her in Pennsylvania.

She agreed to speak only after being promised legal counsel.

That evening, Evelyn met her in a private room at a federal building.

Teresa was sixty-three.

Her hands shook.

“I’ve waited six years for this.”

“For what?”

“For someone to ask the right question.”

Evelyn sat across from her.

“Did my husband hurt my father?”

Teresa began crying.

“I don’t know.”

Evelyn’s heart sank.

Teresa wiped her face.

“But Daniel Crowe came to the hospital the night before your father’s stroke.”

“That doesn’t make sense. Dad wasn’t in the hospital yet.”

“I know.”

Evelyn stared.

Teresa continued.

“He came to see Dr. Leonard Price.”

“Who is that?”

“Your father’s private physician.”

Evelyn knew the name.

Dr. Price had certified Malcolm’s death.

Teresa opened her bag.

“I kept something.”

She removed a photocopy.

A prescription authorization.

Malcolm Mercer.

Dated one day before his collapse.

A sedative.

Extremely high dosage.

Doctor’s signature.

Teresa whispered, “Dr. Price told me this document never existed.”

“Then why do you have it?”

“Because the morning after your father died, Daniel offered me fifty thousand dollars to destroy the original.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“Did you take it?”

“Yes.”

The confession came quietly.

“I was in debt. My son was sick. I took the money.”

“Then why keep a copy?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Evelyn looked at the signature.

“Did Dr. Price sign this?”

Teresa shook her head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I watched Daniel forge it.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“What happened to Dr. Price?”

Teresa looked at them both.

“He disappeared three weeks after Malcolm died.”

Evelyn’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She opened the message.

A photograph.

An elderly man sitting in what looked like a motel room.

Beneath it:

DR. LEONARD PRICE IS ALIVE.

Another message arrived.

HE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT FLYNN.

May you like

Then a third.

COME ALONE OR HE DISAPPEARS AGAIN.
