Chapter 6 - The Woman They Tried to Silence

The envelope remained on Vincent Moretti’s desk long after midnight.

He had read the sentence hundreds of times.

Ask Grace what happened five years ago.

A simple message.

A dangerous one.

Because whoever left it there knew exactly what would happen.

They knew Vincent would investigate.

They knew he would not ignore a mystery placed directly in front of him.

But more importantly, they knew something Vincent did not.

Five years ago.

The same year Grace Parker entered the Moretti mansion.

The same year records disappeared.

The same year someone decided certain information should no longer exist.

Vincent sat in the dark office, surrounded by old family documents and forgotten memories.

For the first time in years, he felt like a stranger inside his own home.

The mansion belonged to him.

The employees worked for him.

The security system answered to him.

Yet someone had been moving through the walls of his life without his knowledge.

And Vincent Moretti hated one thing above everything else.

Being unaware.

He picked up the envelope again.

There was no fingerprint.

No identifying mark.

Whoever left it had been careful.

Too careful.

Vincent placed it beside his father's letter.

Two messages.

Two warnings.

Both pointing toward the same direction.

Grace Parker.

The next morning, Vincent found Grace in the kitchen.

Unlike the grand dining rooms used for guests, the employee kitchen was small and practical.

It was one of the few places in the mansion where people behaved naturally.

No performances.

No pretending.

Grace stood near the counter preparing breakfast for Lily.

When she saw Vincent enter, she immediately became nervous.

"Mr. Moretti."

Vincent noticed her reaction.

She was still afraid.

Not of him.

Of what his questions might reveal.

"Grace, I need to ask you something."

She stopped.

"About what?"

"Five years ago."

The color slowly disappeared from her face.

Vincent saw it.

A reaction impossible to fake.

"What happened?"

Grace looked down.

"I don't understand."

"Yes, you do."

Silence.

The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.

Lily was sitting at the table, drawing with colored pencils.

She looked up.

"Mama?"

Grace forced a smile.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

Vincent pulled out a chair.

"Sit."

Grace hesitated.

Then she did.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"Five years ago was when I met your family."

Vincent nodded.

"Continue."

Grace folded her hands together.

"When I first came here, I was not hired as a maid."

That surprised him.

"What were you hired as?"

"A personal assistant."

Vincent looked at her carefully.

"You?"

Grace nodded.

"I worked in administration before."

"Why did you leave?"

Her eyes lowered.

"Because of an accident."

"What accident?"

Grace looked toward Lily.

Then back at him.

"The previous assistant disappeared."

Vincent became still.

"Disappeared?"

"Her name was Clara Bennett."

The name meant nothing to him.

But it should have.

That bothered him.

"Why don't I know this?"

Grace gave a sad smile.

"Because nobody wanted you to."

The words landed heavily.

Vincent leaned forward.

"Explain."

Grace took a deep breath.

"Clara worked closely with Mr. Clark."

"Edwin?"

"Yes."

"What happened to her?"

Grace looked uncomfortable.

"She discovered something."

"What?"

"I don't know exactly."

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"Grace."

"I swear."

Her voice became emotional.

"I only knew that she was scared."

"Scared of what?"

Grace looked toward the door.

Almost checking if someone was listening.

Then she whispered:

"Someone inside the mansion."

Vincent said nothing.

Because suddenly many pieces began connecting.

The missing records.

The false confession.

The manipulation.

The fear.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Grace looked at him.

"Who would believe me?"

The question was quiet.

But it carried years of pain.

"I was a new employee. Clara was gone. Mr. Clark told everyone she left because of personal reasons."

"And you believed him?"

"No."

Grace shook her head.

"I was scared."

Vincent understood.

Fear was powerful.

Especially when people were trapped inside systems controlled by others.

"What does this have to do with the necklace?"

Grace looked at him.

"I think someone wanted me gone."

"Why?"

"Because I found something."

Vincent leaned closer.

"What?"

Grace hesitated.

Then:

"A hidden file."

The room went silent.

"What kind of file?"

"I don't know."

Grace shook her head.

"Clara showed me once."

"What was inside?"

"Names."

Vincent's expression changed.

"Names of who?"

Grace swallowed.

"People connected to the Moretti family."

An hour later, Vincent was inside the archive room again.

This time, Detective Cole was with him.

"You believe her?"

Cole asked.

Vincent looked at the old documents.

"I believe her fear."

Cole nodded.

"Sometimes that's more reliable."

They searched through old employee records.

Eventually, Cole found something.

"Vincent."

He held up a folder.

"This is strange."

Vincent walked over.

The folder was labeled:

Clara Bennett - Employment Record.

Inside were only three pages.

Too few.

For someone who worked directly with the Moretti family.

"Missing pages," Cole said.

Vincent looked at the empty space.

"Again."

Someone had removed information.

Again.

Cole continued searching.

Then he stopped.

"Wait."

"What?"

"There is a backup."

He pulled a small storage device from the archive cabinet.

Vincent looked surprised.

"How did you find that?"

"It was hidden behind the folder."

Someone had hidden it.

But not destroyed it.

That meant someone wanted the truth to survive.

They connected the device.

A single video file appeared.

Created five years ago.

Vincent pressed play.

The screen showed a woman.

Clara Bennett.

She looked tired.

Afraid.

She was recording herself in what appeared to be an office.

"If someone is watching this..."

Her voice shook.

"Then something happened to me."

Vincent and Cole exchanged looks.

The woman continued.

"I found documents that should not exist."

She looked behind her.

"Mr. Moretti has no idea what is happening inside this house."

Vincent froze.

The recording continued.

"Edwin Clark has been changing records. Financial records. Employee records. Security reports."

Cole looked at Vincent.

But Vincent kept watching.

Clara's eyes filled with fear.

"I tried to tell Mr. Moretti."

A pause.

"But someone stopped me."

The video shook.

"Isabella Vale knows."

Vincent's expression changed.

Cole whispered:

"Isabella."

Clara continued.

"They are using the Moretti name to hide things."

The screen suddenly glitched.

Then went black.

The room became silent.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Because Vincent had just discovered something worse than betrayal.

A conspiracy.

One that had been growing inside his family for years.

That evening, Vincent returned to the mansion.

But he did not go to his office.

He went to the main hall.

Isabella was there.

Preparing for another attempt at the engagement dinner.

She smiled when she saw him.

"Vincent."

He stopped several feet away.

"Tell me about Clara Bennett."

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But it disappeared.

And Vincent saw everything.

Fear.

Recognition.

Guilt.

"You know that name."

Isabella slowly recovered.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Don't lie to me."

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

She stared at him.

"Vincent."

"Five years ago, a woman working inside this mansion disappeared."

"She left."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Someone made her leave."

Isabella said nothing.

The silence was enough.

Vincent looked at her.

"I trusted you."

Her expression changed.

"You still can."

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"I can't."

For the first time, Isabella looked hurt.

But Vincent could not tell if the emotion was real.

"Do you know what the worst part is?"

He continued.

"I could understand someone wanting money."

He looked around the mansion.

"I could understand someone wanting power."

His eyes returned to her.

"But using a child to destroy her mother?"

His voice became colder.

"That is something I will never forgive."

Isabella looked away.

And Vincent knew.

She knew more than she admitted.

Maybe everything.

Before he could continue, her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Fear appeared again.

A message.

Vincent noticed.

"Who is it?"

She quickly locked the phone.

"Nobody."

The same answer.

The same lie.

Vincent stepped back.

"Everyone says that when they are hiding someone."

He turned away.

"Tonight, I will find out who."

As he walked through the mansion halls, Vincent understood something.

Grace Parker was never the target.

She was only the person someone chose to sacrifice.

The real secret was much bigger.

And the people who tried to silence Grace had made one mistake.

They allowed her to survive long enough to tell the truth.

Now Vincent Moretti was no longer protecting the reputation of his family.

He was protecting the people his family had hurt.

May you like

And for the first time in years, the most powerful man in the mansion was not the person everyone feared.

It was the truth they could no longer stop.
