Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind the Locked Service Room

The Moretti mansion had never been quiet.

Even at midnight, it carried the sounds of wealth.

The soft footsteps of employees walking through marble halls.

The distant movement of security guards changing positions.

The sound of expensive clocks ticking in rooms filled with priceless furniture.

But that night was different.

The mansion was not peaceful.

It was waiting.

Everyone inside the house understood something had changed.

Vincent Moretti was no longer ignoring the cracks beneath the surface.

And when Vincent decided to look closer, secrets rarely survived.

Grace Parker sat in one of the smaller guest rooms on the second floor.

It was not a luxurious room like the ones prepared for important visitors.

It was simple.

A bed.

A small table.

A window facing the garden.

But to Grace, it felt like the first safe place she had been inside the mansion all night.

Lily was asleep beside her.

The little girl had refused to let go of her mother's hand until exhaustion finally won.

Grace watched her daughter sleep.

Her fingers gently moved through Lily's hair.

She had spent the last few hours wondering if this was real.

If someone had actually listened to her.

If Vincent Moretti truly believed she was innocent.

For years, Grace had learned one painful lesson.

People with power did not usually care about people like her.

They cared about order.

Appearance.

Convenience.

A maid could disappear from a mansion, and most people would only notice when the room was not cleaned.

But Vincent had looked at her.

Not through her uniform.

Not through her position.

He had looked at her like she was a person.

That frightened her almost as much as the accusation.

Because if Vincent failed her, there would be nowhere else to go.

A soft knock came at the door.

Grace immediately became tense.

She looked toward Lily.

The little girl moved slightly but did not wake.

Grace stood carefully.

"Who is it?"

"Vincent Moretti."

Her eyes widened.

She opened the door.

Vincent stood outside alone.

No guards.

No assistants.

No Edwin.

That surprised her.

"Sir."

"How is your daughter?"

Grace looked back.

"Sleeping."

Vincent nodded.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Vincent entered.

He looked around the room.

A simple room.

A room that reflected Grace's place inside the mansion.

Not her value.

Her position.

"Grace."

She looked at him.

"I need you to tell me everything."

Her expression tightened.

"Everything?"

"From the beginning."

Grace looked uncertain.

Vincent continued.

"The necklace. Edwin. The room. The accusation."

The maid lowered her eyes.

"I already told the truth."

"I know."

That answer surprised her.

Vincent looked at Lily.

"That is why I am asking again."

Grace slowly sat down.

She took a breath.

"I started working here three years ago."

Vincent listened.

"My husband died before Lily was born. I needed work, and the Moretti household offered stability."

Her voice softened.

"I was grateful."

"Did you ever have problems with anyone here?"

Grace hesitated.

Again.

That hesitation.

Vincent noticed.

"Grace."

She looked at him.

"You are afraid of someone."

The woman's eyes filled with sadness.

"I don't want trouble."

"Trouble already found you."

Grace looked toward the sleeping child.

Then whispered:

"Mrs. Vale."

Vincent's expression did not change.

"Isabella?"

Grace nodded.

"Not at first."

She folded her hands.

"When I started working here, she was kind."

"Kind?"

"Yes."

Grace looked confused by her own memory.

"She remembered my birthday once. She gave Lily a toy. She acted like she cared."

"But?"

Grace swallowed.

"After the engagement became serious, everything changed."

"How?"

"She started asking questions."

"What kind of questions?"

"About you."

Vincent became still.

"Me?"

Grace nodded.

"She asked about your schedule. Your business trips. Who had access to your office."

The room felt colder.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Grace looked away.

"But she became different."

Vincent thought about Isabella's reaction in the hallway.

Her need to control the situation.

Her fear when he questioned the story.

"Did Edwin know about this?"

Grace answered quietly.

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

"Because he was always there."

She paused.

"Always."

That word stayed in Vincent's mind.

Always.

People rarely noticed the person who was always present.

That was what made them dangerous.

Vincent stood.

"Thank you."

Grace looked surprised.

"Sir?"

"I believe you."

A tear appeared in her eyes.

Not because she was weak.

Because she had been waiting too long to hear those words.

After leaving the room, Vincent walked directly toward the security office.

The mansion had changed.

The same walls.

The same lights.

But now he saw everything differently.

Every employee.

Every camera.

Every locked door.

Every person who had access.

Inside the security office, his head of surveillance was waiting.

"Mr. Moretti."

"Show me the footage from Isabella Vale's room."

The security officer hesitated.

"Sir, those recordings were already reviewed."

"By who?"

A pause.

"Mr. Clark."

Vincent stared.

"Play them."

The footage appeared on the screen.

The camera showed Isabella's bedroom.

Hours earlier.

Grace entered carrying cleaning supplies.

She moved normally.

Nothing unusual.

She cleaned the room.

Then she found something near the sofa.

The necklace.

She immediately picked it up.

She looked concerned.

Then she left.

Vincent leaned closer.

"Stop."

The footage froze.

Grace had not hidden anything.

She had not searched.

She had not acted suspiciously.

She found the necklace and reported it.

"Continue."

The footage continued.

A few minutes later, Edwin entered the room.

Alone.

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"What time is this?"

"6:14 PM."

"What happened after?"

The footage showed Edwin leaving.

But the angle was not clear enough.

Vincent turned.

"Enhance."

The security officer worked quickly.

The image became sharper.

Then Vincent saw it.

Edwin's hand.

Holding something small.

The necklace.

The room went silent.

The man who had accused Grace of stealing the necklace had been holding it after she left.

Vincent stepped back.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Because anger was easy.

Control was harder.

And Vincent Moretti had built his entire life around control.

"Print this."

"Yes, sir."

Before leaving, Vincent noticed something else.

The footage time.

6:14.

The accusation document had been created at 6:40.

Someone had thirty minutes.

Thirty minutes to create a story.

Thirty minutes to choose Grace as the target.

Thirty minutes to turn the truth upside down.

Vincent returned to his office.

But this time, he did not close the door.

He wanted people to know he was working.

He wanted whoever was watching to understand.

The game had changed.

On his desk, he placed the footage report beside the confession.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Vincent answered.

"Speak."

For several seconds, nobody responded.

Only breathing.

Then a voice.

Low.

Careful.

"Mr. Moretti."

Vincent recognized it immediately.

Edwin Clark.

But Edwin was not calling from inside the mansion.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"Somewhere you should not be looking."

Vincent's expression hardened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you are asking questions that will destroy more than you realize."

Vincent looked toward the mansion windows.

"Is that a threat?"

"No."

Edwin's voice remained calm.

"It is advice."

Vincent almost laughed.

"Advice from the man who created a false confession?"

Silence.

Then Edwin said:

"You don't know the entire story."

Vincent's grip tightened around the phone.

"Then tell me."

Another pause.

"I can't."

"Can't?"

"Not yet."

The call ended.

Vincent stared at the screen.

Not because Edwin had threatened him.

Because Edwin sounded afraid.

And that changed everything.

People who lied confidently were dangerous.

People who lied because they were trapped were different.

Someone was controlling Edwin.

Someone above him.

Someone who had the power to make a man like Edwin hesitate.

Vincent looked at the broken name tag sitting on his desk.

A small piece of silver.

A child's message.

A mother's name.

A simple object that had opened a door nobody wanted opened.

Then his office lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The security monitor beside him suddenly turned black.

A second later, a single message appeared.

No name.

No explanation.

Only one sentence.

Stop digging into what belongs to the Moretti family.

Vincent stared at the screen.

Then slowly smiled.

Not because he was amused.

Because now he knew.

The person hiding the truth had just made a mistake.

They had revealed something important.

They were afraid.

And Vincent Moretti had always been most dangerous when someone tried to frighten him.

He picked up the broken name tag.

"I was never looking for a fight."

His voice was quiet.

"But now you made this personal."

Outside the office, the mansion remained beautiful.

The roses were still arranged perfectly.

The lights were still glowing.

The guests were still celebrating upstairs.

May you like

But beneath the luxury, a war had already begun.

And Vincent Moretti was finally ready to find out who had been hiding behind the locked doors.
